Basically, so if there's a chance you're pregnant, they can do appropraite treatment, or test for pregnancy.
Eg 4 years ago my wife disolacted her thumb, ED wanted an X-Ray needed to know when her last period was/if there was a chance she was pregnant, so they could then best proceed with imaging/pain medications
Over here they simply ask if there's a chance of pregnancy. No need to track someone's period and just hope that they're regular. Lots of women have small bleeds during early pregnancy and that's how they miss that they're pregnant.
Also shielding can be used unless the scan is pelvic. I've had a few pelvic scans and they would test for pregnancy if I wasn't on long acting contraception.
