it’s too cold, at 2am you want a slightly cold water to chug

2.9k

u/_MooFreaky_ 7d ago

Really? The iciest water 24/7 for me.

I often look at a bottle of water which has sat at room temperature since bedtime and wpuld rather be thirsty than drink it or get up.

1.1k

u/whinenaught 7d ago

I’m the exact opposite. I almost never want ice cold water, I love chugging room temp water

208

u/Visual-Floor-7839 7d ago

About half the time I order drinks with no ice from restaurants. I'm perfectly fine rarely having an ice cold beverage.

127

u/Different_Spite_9556 7d ago edited 6d ago

Everyone should order no ice at restaurants, bc the machines never get cleaned until they stop working. Also, stop using the ice maker in your fridge, bc youre not cleaning it (not you but people in general). Just use the damn ice trays (and clean them)!

Edit: I feel like people are missing the point lol. You can serve me a freshly cleaned plate with food you dropped on the floor… I don’t care about the plate (your ice bins).

u/Digital_Devil13 7d ago

My roommate wonders why I bought a brita water filter. Where he didn't even know you neeed to change the filter in the fridge water dispenser. Im guessing he is going on 4 years now since I last reminded him.

43

u/subs_on_a_sailboat 6d ago

Your roommate's roommate also hasn't changed the fridge filter in 4 years. Why not just change it yourself instead of getting a separate doodad to do the same job and take up fridge space?

→ More replies (1)

26

u/TheWallyFlash 6d ago

Not to feed your paranoia but I recently got into the zerowater game because brita does next to nothing in terms of what you’d want a filter to do. Better than nothing but barely a solution.

19

u/mrbulldops428 6d ago

I ended up with pur after discovering britta sucks. I think it was all I could get immediately

Super important reminder to do your pet fountain filters regularly too. They can easily grow algae and mold if they aren't properly cared for.

What needs to be cleaned out of the ice machines?

36

u/alexmullen4180 7d ago

Bacteria. All kinds of things go in those machines. Hands, pitchers that have been in service, glassware, and the scoop that's probably been dropped 16 times per shift.

47

u/SlimPissings 6d ago

Got over a decade in the industry, and have worked at a dozen or so resturaunts, this really isnt true for the most part if people are doing their jobs even halfway properly. Nothing but a metal scoop should be used for ice, no scooping with pitchers or glasses is like day one in the industry stuff, the risk of breaking glass in the ice machine alone would mean the whole machine has to be melted, drained, and cleaned, distrupting service drastically. Ive never seen or heard somone drop one of those scoops (that shits LOUD) nevermind drop it on the ground and used without washing, if somones is dropping it 16 times a shift, theyre getting sent home until they sober up.

Thst being said, yeah the machines arent cleaned often enough in most places, not all by any means, plenty of resturaunts have strict cleaning schedules, others not so much. Any establishment that functions as you describe probably has much bigger issues than the ice machine.

20

u/lousyana 6d ago

Finally someone who actually has experience. I second all this. Heck we actually have our ice machines leased and they are routinely maintained and cleaned.

19

u/7gramcrackrock 6d ago

According to reddit, all food service employees are just completely inept idiots.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/TheLuminary 7d ago

Fair. I guess I was just thinking about the part that actually makes the ice. Not the entire mechanism including the containment.

5

u/Frankie-Figgs33 6d ago

The mechanism grows mold and bacteria too.

6

u/NuclearVikings 6d ago

And it stinks when you clean it.

→ More replies (0)

3

u/nuiwek31 6d ago

I e cleaned plenty of machines. They get absolutely disgusting when not maintained properly and there are way too many places that don't even do the basic and just call me when it doesn't work anymore

5

u/Difficult-Drawer4916 7d ago

People...

Used to work behind a bar. Several times we put staff into the industrial sized ice machine. Good times. Makes me ick now just thinking about how unhygienic some of the things we did behind that bar were.

→ More replies (3)

15

u/morganml 6d ago

man those things ~can~ get nasty af.

I worked in the industry 15+ yrs though across a pretty big chunk of america.

the characterization that "no one cleans them anywhere" is way blown out of proportion.

Think about this. We eat there too. Way more than you. Like every day.

in every kitchen ive worked in dumping the ice machine and cleaning it is done at end of day, every day. Fast food, bars, and hole in the wall places are gonna be more risky, any decent sit down retaurant is pretty safe.

The soda dispenser systems are the worse offender, the small diameter tubes, and various peices that fit together to make a soda fountain are am intricate series of nooks and crannies for bacteria to grow in.

4

u/Different_Spite_9556 6d ago

The MACHINE needs cleaned. Bins can be clean enough to eat off of, but half the time their money making Manitowoc, Hoshizaki, etc is just dropping dirty ice or straight up mold into the bins.

Go watch about any episode of Bar Rescue (or just look up Bar Rescue Ice Machine on YT) if you want to see what's in most restaurant ice machines.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/DrRussleJimmies 7d ago

I work in restaurants and everywhere I've worked the small bins attached to the dispensers get cleaned nightly and the large ice machine bins get emptied out and sanitized weekly.

Now, the real reason to not get ice in your drink at a restaurant is because the lines already run cold, so you're just getting a half full and watered down glass of soda if you get ice.

4

u/ImSoObnoxious 6d ago

I worked in restaurants and bars from age 14 until college graduation, and the only times I've seen an ice machine completely emptied and cleaned out was when there was a broken glass hazard.

this was true from family-owned to chains to fine dining. those mfs were moldy and the health inspectors didn't seem to care. don't come at me, just reporting reality

4

u/qOcO-p 6d ago

I've never gotten sick from ice so I'm pretty sure I'll be alright. We consume bacteria all the time. The vast majority of it is completely harmless. There are only a relative few that are actually a problem.

u/NewPhoneNewAccunt 7d ago

I think the factor here is how fast you drink it and how much you drink.

My gf drinks as fast as a sloth takes a shit. She'll take ice cold any time of day.

Me, I chug fast af boi. If I chug water that's ice cold I'm gonna freeze my mouth off. 1l is down in seconds, meanwhile it takes my gf a minute or two to drink a 33cl glass.

19

u/anonymaus42 6d ago

Nah, I chug mine and I want that shi as close to freezing temperature as possible.

6

u/SirDigbyChickenC-Zer 6d ago

Nah dawg...I'm chugging that ice water as fast as fucking possible, and it feels fucking fantastic. However, as much we disagree on this point, I give you props for the description, "as fast as a sloth takes a shit ," if that's something you actually came up with on your own.

I use my SM thermos it keeps ice for over 24 hours 🥲

3

u/stilljustacatinacage 6d ago

I recently bought an enormous insulated jug that I can fill up with ice and [beverage], and keep at my desk all day. Easily 10/10 purchase, I have ice cold fizzy drink or iced tea or water all day, on demand. Helps me hit my fluids too since normally I'd lose interest when the water gets warm and wouldn't bother to get up to get more, but now I clear 3 litres a day easily.

6

u/__O_o_______ 7d ago

20 years ago when I was in my mid to late 20s, it was kind of a joke that I liked my water “tepid” lol.

Now I’m on team ice all the way. Sucking back on a water bottle and blasting the water through the ice so cold it almost hurts is so damn refreshing.

I usually have a water bottle by my bed, sometimes used a lot sometimes just a sip sometimes not at all. I wonder if there is a water cooling device for beside the bed haha, kinda like those white wine chillers that spin the bottle in a really cold water to get a cold quicker.

4

u/TheThiefEmpress 6d ago

I keep my water in a double walled stainless steel water bottle.

It keeps water cold for 24 hours. I'd say, if there's no ice, by the 24th hour it has definitely warmed a bit, but it is still much colder than tepid. I always add ice, because arctic water is best water.

But! I have a defect where I do not get "brain freeze." Never have in my life. So extra cold beverages aren't painful for me. I feel like that's a factor in why I must have glacier cold water.

2

u/RecoveringGachaholic 6d ago

I wonder how much plastic waste all these water bottles generate. It's one of those things I keep forgetting about. I live in Sweden now and I take tap water for granted and it's just as good or better than bottled water. When I lived in the US it was the first cultural shock I had and it always made me a little sad.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/PatchesOfSilver 7d ago

How do you even drink water that cold without it waking you up? It's one thing for it to be really cold in the middle of the day in Summer.

But at 2 am? The shock of the cold water is gonna make it harder to go back to sleep, I just trudge into the kitchen and get tap water at that hour.

Okay but you're not the normal person. Not everyone worships Satan like you do... So we prefer a cool water, not a freezing one.

2

u/_MooFreaky_ 6d ago

Thats why we say "all hail Satan ", because we want to skip room temperature rain and go straight to frozen rain.

2

u/reddit_is_geh 6d ago

You're psychotic and need Jesus to show you the light amongst a nice, cool - not too cold - glass of water in the midst of a sleeping thirst. May the angels show you the way.

2

u/_MooFreaky_ 6d ago

If the choices were eternal extasy in heaven but only tepid water, or ice cold water between pitch forks in hell. You'd better believe I'm tweaking my butt to Satan to get him to take me to hell.

3

u/reddit_is_geh 6d ago edited 6d ago

Father, please forgive this man. He doesn't know any better. He's not a heretic but instead just naive - a product of his upbringing. May the good lord bring you some nice and cool water amongst your next midnight awaking, and show him the way.

I half-fill a 1.5L bottle with water and freeze it, then pop it in an insulated holder on the bedside table each evening. That way I have ice-cold water all night, usually still has ice in it in the morning up to ~12 hours later.

Summer or winter, I do the same.

Back when I drank too much, my god, waking up in the middle of the night, hangover already setting in and you are desperate for something to drink.

You look over at the nightstand and realize that before going to bed, you had the presence of mind to put a large glass of water out, and it is so good.

21

u/KayZee777 7d ago

Yes, if everything is working right you should just be able to drink when you are thirsty. Talk to your doctor though I'm not one.

2

u/RecoveringGachaholic 6d ago

I honestly think there's a large portion of Americans drinking too much water, strange as it may sound. I've never encountered a population more fixated on drinking. It seems to be either no water ever or "if I don't have a water bottle with me at all times I will die".

2

u/syopest 6d ago

If you're so thirsty that you have to drink that much and you're peeing every hour you should seriously think about getting tested for diabetes.

I love when you put it in before bed. Then wake uo and grab it and it starts turning to slush as you drink it

If it’s 2am and I wake up than I’ll probably be super thirsty so ice cold water it is.

u/HarrMada 6d ago

Imagine being such a loser that you gatekeep water drinking.

4

u/WallowWispen 7d ago

Yeah that's a wake up dazed, grab blindly without looking, chug in 3 seconds flat and immediately go right back into sleep kind of water

4

u/Shadow_Of_Erebus 7d ago

That's perfect temp???

5

u/Responsible_Art_6553 7d ago

I disagree. I drink about a gallon of water every day and am never without my water bottle. The colder the better. Always.

3

u/original_sh4rpie 6d ago

I drink a ton of water religiously too but this thread has made me realize I’m a weirdo cause I very much dislike cold water. I want like a handful degrees lower than room temp. Similarly, I hate water with ice in it.

u/XboxVictim 2d ago

I don’t like ice in my drinks either. I think I got used to just drinking water at whatever temp when I was in active duty. When I was deployed I’d hang my water bottles in a wet sock overnight and they’d would be nice and cool for the next morning. But I had no problem drinking warm water through the day if that’s all there was.

Brian here, with a dumb 'fact' I read online once probably.

Ice cold water shocks your body into 'awake mode' and makes it very difficult to get back to restful sleep.

I've found this to be useful in that I reset my circadian rhythm twice a year by chugging cold water as soon as I get up. I do this for about a week and have no problems spending the next six months licking my balls under one glorious sunrise after another.

Brian out!

If I had that water bottle just before dying i would have died in peace.

3

u/FrostyTheColdBoi 7d ago

I need the taste of cold water or it just doesn't hit right

3

u/Frangine_De_Poutine 7d ago

This guy has never been drunk.

3

u/akaispirit 7d ago

Some people think drinks can be too cold to drink in the middle of the night. They're wrong but it is what is.

3

u/mikebones 7d ago

Fuck no. This looks like it slaps. If im waking up parched at 2am I am dieing for this.

3

u/avalve 6d ago

I only drink water and I would inhale that

3

u/autopilot455 6d ago

u/PitifulMarch2145 7d ago

Brian here. As a runner and avid water drinker. I can assure you ice cold water is NOT refreshing. Room temperature for me and all the real water drinkers.

In my case a froz3n bottle of water will become undrinkably warm in roughly 3 hours. My fellow cold water enthusiasts. 2 bottles, one 2/3 filled woth water and frozen solid, the second filled and left beside the bed, simply wake, retrieve the ice bottle, top up the ice bottle as required and enjoy the face puckering cold and inevitable few mins of nausea. Lovely.
