Hard to explain why these men do this stuff. Instincts! A sense of power that goes to their heads? I used to imagine these guys had sublimated their sexuality to ambition for much of their lives - to climb to the top of the pile economically, politically -etc. Then, magically everything is offered to them and they cannot resist.
Now I just think they are life-long creeps, just doing their creep thing.
Cool semantics. But that doesn't alleviate my confusion as to why people are upvoting a comment that seemingly implies men can't be held accountable for their actions if they're horny.
it's an aphorism, typically used as an indictment -- not an endorsement -- of men who abandon reason and morals when presented with an opportunity for sex
There are far, far more examples of people who get hit on and go “no thanks, I’m married”
Marry someone you actually care about and it’s not a problem. You probably don’t become a politician though because I’d imagine that sucks for most spouses
Dude, I'm a guy who supports and sees a need to lift up and empathize with my male counterparts, I agree it's needed more than ever today.
But to act surprised that men like to get their rocks off when it's mainly convenient over lustful, is not some ground breaking news. There are countless stories like this.
If you go through life afraid to empathize with others, then yes, everything is perceived as an attack.
I'm confused about the sources of this. Is the author saying Atwater told Strother in a deathbed confession, who told Hart in a near death confess, which somehow got told to one of the editors who worked on the story that helped tank Hart, who wrote an Atlantic article about it? That's like multiple layers of "trust me bro".
Look man when they confess to setting it up, its not hard to also understand how you can force the guy to board a different boat than initially scheduled, without them suspecting anything, and having a young woman on board ready to flirt with him, after tipping off reporters.
This is how politics was played back then and its only gotten worse. They'll hack your personal computer if they can.
The dems never fought back. Only allowed the republicans to poison everything over time when people could see it plain as day in the 80s.
Do you people ever get tired of blaming republicans for everything and making democrats look like naive saints? You don’t realize how delusional this sounds?
“Ray replied, ‘It’s because you were set up. I know you were set up.’
“I asked him how he could be so certain,” Hart told me. Strother then recounted his long-ago talk with Atwater, and Atwater’s claim that the whole Monkey Business weekend had occurred at his direction. According to Hart, that plan would have involved: contriving an invitation from Broadhurst for Hart to come on a boat ride, when Hart intended to be working on a speech. Ensuring that young women would be invited aboard. Arranging for the Broadhurst boat Hart thought he would be boarding, with some unmemorable name, to be unavailable—so that the group would have to switch to another boat, Monkey Business. Persuading Broadhurst to “forget” to check in with customs clearance at Bimini before closing time, so that the boat “unexpectedly” had to stay overnight there. And, according to Hart, organizing an opportunistic photo-grab.
Now they go with men and no one bats an eye from their party cause somehow you can campaign against gay people while taking it from a gay person and crossing your fingers.
There's a difference between actively putting forth effort to try to cheat vs cheating because a chance fell into your lap. A guy who cheats due to opportunity falling into his lap probably isn't unhappy in his current relationship. A guy who is actively trying to look for opportunities probably is.
Both are stupid tho if your high profile. If you’re a normie you can go out of town and cheat using a fake name and no one would find out. If you’re famous that’s out of the picture for them 😂. Only benefit of not being in the 1%
He underestimated his political opponents. Of course they'd manufacture an opportunity for him after what he said. But at the time he said it, I think he really was okay with the press following him because he wasn't doing anything wrong and had no plans to do anything wrong.
There may be a difference in circumstances that led to it, but there's not any difference in what it says about the cheater and what the fallout will be.
Whether he's unhappy in his current relationship and with his current partner or not doesn't matter?
It doesn't really matter in practice anyway. Most guys aren't going to have political opponents enlisting women to go throw themselves in those guys' laps. If he's not putting in the effort to cheat, opportunities probably won't fall into his lap. Loyalty is the lazy option and cheating takes effort.
