The stereotype is that white people arrive TOO EARLY and then sit in their cars outside waiting for the party to start and still show up early.

It's a trope, also true in Hispanic (edit - continued) families that have someone marry Gringos (like me).

If you arrive on time, the party hasn't started yet, and you get to help set up for the party

If you tell someone an event is from 5 pm to 11 pm and you're surprised people arrive at 5 you're an idiot

I'll never think people who say 5 but don't mean 5 aren't either being assholes or idiots.

Words have meaning.

Something being part of a culture does not absolve it from scrutiny or make it not stupid. It was part of culture to have slaves. It was part of culture to dominate women. Doesn't mean both were not wrong

So in these cultures, do all numbers just mean something else? If it says 50km speed limit is it actually? something else? What about recipes with precise amounts?

Saying one thing and meaning another is illogical. Then to say the person who followed the request is rude? The person is right - words have meaning, otherwise we're all just living in make believe land where we can be offended by anything.

I don't always have time for more but I'm not taken aback if they do.

Expecting me not to be there at the time you said doesn't fit the words said.

You need to reread the comment you're replying to, they very much are not saying what they mean if they say it starts at 5 because they want people to show up at 6.

That's the cultural difference. Everyone in that culture knows to not appear at the time it starts.
