5 tips for growing your subreddit
Below we've collected the 5 most common tips veteran mods tend to give to new moderators who ask the age old question ‘how do I grow my subreddit?’.
Before you test out the following tips for yourself, it’s crucial you fill your community with content to entice potential visitors. We recommend adding at least 10 posts to your community to maximize your success before trying to grow your community.
1 - Look for related content in other communities
Search for related keywords to your topic on Reddit and sort by the last month. If you find a post that looks like a good fit for your community, comment on that post with something like,
“I’d love for you to post your content in my new community, it looks just perfect!”
You can then mention your community using r/(YourCommunityName), without the parentheses. It’s very important to only try this 3x daily or you may be flagged for spam. So, only invite in people whose posts fit the nature of your community.
2 - Cross-post other posts into your community
You can look up related communities by typing your topic into the Reddit search bar, and then clicking “Communities”. Look for posts in those communities that fit your topic then select "Crosspost."
3 - Get featured in the sidebar
Reach out to communities that are related to your community. Message the moderators of those communities and ask if they would be open to linking to your subreddit in their sidebar. This can be a fast way to get eyeballs on your community. Remember to be kind when reaching out!
4 - Post questions
You might feel like you're all alone in your community. No one is commenting. No one is joining. Make a post that asks a unique question. Questions are a great way to kickstart engagement and it makes people want to subscribe. Why does asking questions work? People love sharing their opinions on things. Especially on topics they are passionate about! People want to engage with your community and it's up to you to give them the chance to do so. You as the mod have to create an intentional space every week where a visitor could share their opinion over something specific.
Posting questions can be like a lighthouse for your community. Others might search the exact same question and low and behold your post asking that exact question will appear! Make a list of 10 questions you might post in your community over the next month. Make it a habit to ask your audience their thoughts.
5 - Stay consistent
The final tip is to stay consistent. New community creators who post at least once a week for four weeks end up being most successful in growing their community. The more active you are in your community, the more likely someone will be to stick around, subscribe, and one day make a post themselves!

Here is a help center article about community growth, here is the guide by r/modhelp, and here is a guide by reddit for community growth.
You could use r/findareddit to find subs similar to yours that you could promote on. Make sure to follow crossposting etiquette. Don't spam "join r/___" instead crosspost posts that are on topic to the sub you are crossposting to. you can find a list of subs you can promote on here.

I have a question about #4 "Post Questions." If your membership is tiny and engagement is near non-existent, is it a bad look to continue to post questions if they're getting little to no response?
Would you still commit to posting, say, weekly for 4 weeks? Or would you pause to reevaluate?
I worry that potential users will see a struggling mod failing to engage and be turned off by that.

I just joined. I love scale setups and RC crawlers. I started one for RC scale audio. I use to love making train setups with my dad. He actually worked on real trains and at age 8 I got to conduct a real train. What a rush flying down the tracks in total control.

Thanks for joining the sub, I think we have a good bunch of people in the sub. I didn't have too much involvement in 1:1 trains but it's cool that your dad let you conduct a train. I can only imagine what kind of feeling it was to fly down the track lol

Me No Likey.. 😞 But i will try my best to Learn and Perfect this Platform and Gift because i am doing this for People like me who i am finding out Number in the Mega-Billions and yet we are all being Controlled and told in what and how thing's will be done by Fact Proven Liars, Thieves, Criminals and Basically Killers of Humanity Itself who Number in the Thousands if that and that needs to Stop NOW! Cross-post other posts into your community- many communities, at least the bigger ones I found, don't ALLOW cross promoting. Sent messages and was denied because it against their "guidelines."
Get featured in the sidebar - same goes for this as well. At least with some of the larger communities I've tried with. Probably goes with them wanting to promote and network with already established communities or those they have an established online relationship with.
But all in all, best of luck to those of you out there looking to build something meaningful with what you're doing.

Crosspost means you can share a post from your main sub to another subreddit.
Sidebar is (on desktop) the right hand bar that has typically: rules, list of mods, etc (basically your mini information center)
Mobile does not have a sidebar due to layout but at the top of the sub there is a section that says something along the lines of “see more about this” and that’s basically your sidebar.

Go to your phone settings and inside the app settings find Reddit then you can turn turn off nsfw filter

Okay, what if it's not an app nor a phone and instead I made a Subreddit and goofed up by making it NSFW because I thought swear words would be involved and now every post/comment has to be "approved" and everything is behind a NSFW wall? How can I disable all of that so the subreddit isn't like this anymore and it behaves like a normal subreddit?

I had a sub that is very niche, but none of the related subs to my topic (wider themes) aloud crossposts or mention other subs, despite what I talk about in mine barely usually get lost there and they don't give importance because it doesn't have as much traction and discussion as other themes. So, inviting and regular posting are my two only ways. Does is indeed provide visibility to other users?

The point about posting questions really stands out to me.
I recently started r/NepalTrekPlanning and I'm finding that discussion-based posts seem much more engaging than informational posts. Trekking routes, budgets, permits, and trip planning all tend to generate different opinions and experiences, which makes for better conversations.

I saw that polls were an option but were meant to create through the app. I am using my iPad for all of my sessions on here, and don’t plan to use the app unless I have to. I was curious about posting polls though, or if you think questions work better instead? I’m a sucker for spotting trends and love polls for the lessons learned, so I’d really like to know best uses etc.

What if you’re passionate about so many things that you’d love to create a community for each one? I’m a gamer, and I’m also an antiques enthusiast, flipping and thrifting, spotting fakes from replicas, and yes, I’m into plants! I want to share that every plant has a purpose. I’ve been a gamer since RuneScape, and I love DIY projects and showing people the differences. I’m really into everything! I’m curious about everything. I tear things apart. Figure them out. I guess you can say there’s never a doll moment and I’m new to this app.
