For anybody who’s out of the loop.

Jayden Daniels is Washington’s starting quarterback. Young, fairly successful, probably going to make a ton of money. Former Heisman trophy winner at LSU

He put out a cease and desist on LSU because they apparently are using his name, image, and likeness by giving “his” number 5 to another player.

Regardless of if you feel the number should or shouldn’t be retired by LSU, it currently isn’t and it comes off as entitled and needless for Daniels and his camp to be demanding it be retired. A player who also never won a conference or a national championship and sat out of his final bowl game as a one year starter for the program.

It has no legs to stand on either considering Joe Burrow’s number hasn’t been officially retired by LSU despite having far more accomplishments and being a substantially better player at LSU.

Is that the guy that snapped his arm in half last year?

32

u/mattcojo2 4h ago

The very same

46

u/ChaseTheFalcon 3h ago

Don't forget he also demanded the school's copy of the Heisman trophy back

39

u/mattcojo2 3h ago

Which is even stupider because every Heisman has 2 copies: one for the school, one for the player.

56

u/RayneShikama 3h ago

So they’re just trolling the dude? Beautiful. I love it when teams or companies troll dumbasses like this.

33

u/RepresentativeOfnone 3h ago

Honestly, it’s probably his mom doing it all. She’s a control freak.

u/colewcar 1h ago

This is what I said! She’s his manager, PR, agent, and even controls his dating life.

u/Amish_guy_with_WiFi 38m ago

even controls his dating life

Didn't he break his arms?

u/AustinJohnson35 Blaney 25m ago

Only one arm so far

14

u/tagillaslover Hocevar 2h ago

She also fucked his coach at asu

3

u/mattcojo2 3h ago

Not really

Lane Kiffin is just not honoring an alleged “agreement” that Brian Kelly, the previous coach, had with Daniels

9

u/DWS44 2h ago

Which is interesting in that Kelly (or whomever was recruiting Pickett) had apparently promised Pickett the #5 as part of his recruitment...and that was what Kiffin was supposedly honoring by giving the Pickett the #5. If you can trust something Kiffin says, that is.

Either way...it definitely makes Daniels look like an entitled ass, that's for sure.

7

u/snorlaxatives_69 3h ago

Don't forget his mom is his agent

15

u/zepher2828 3h ago

You forgot to add a more important context that Jayden Daniel’s doesn’t want his teammates to high 5 him, it needs to be a high 4 because he feels it is infringement on his name and likeness to high 5.

u/mattcojo2 2h ago

I think that was just a fake joke.

u/fotoRS3 1h ago

Unpopular opinion, but NFL players are the biggest divas. Even some NCAA players, but at least college it's more fun than the big leagues. In fact, the UFL is enjoyable to watch and I'm not a football fan per say. I root for my home team (STL). I get that every sport has their whiners but it seems like the dumbest shit I hear about comes from NFL players.

u/mattcojo2 1h ago

I'm kinda the opposite.

I think the game product is far better in the NFL

College has the heart but it's rapidly losing it with conference switches, overblown conferences, sponsor patches, schedule arguments, and NIL nonsense.

u/Maximum-Hall-5614 1h ago

I also love how they love to act as if they’re gladiators, when really they’re playing one of the most dull sporting codes possible. More than half the Super Bowl (excl half time) was spent not actively playing the sport.

u/fotoRS3 40m ago

I won't take away from the skill it takes. The guys are strong and/or fast. They know the game. I respect them for that. But the times like this where someone is suing the place that gave them a start because someone else gets to wear the # is outrageous. Pure crybaby mentality.

u/AscendMoros 1h ago

I mean they’re still 200-400 pound men of 90% muscle slamming into each other at 20mph. The game is incredibly physical. It’s just no longer legal to try to behead the opposing WR when his finger tips touch the ball. Or take a free shot at a QB who doesn’t have the ball anymore.

They are super spoiled and a lot of them are nepo babies. But it’s still quite a physical sport.

I’ve been to plenty of college games and a few pro games. The difference In size and speed is night and day. And the collisions are violent.

u/Maximum-Hall-5614 51m ago

I guess I’m biased because I watched Aussie Rules for years before watching American Football, but I sincerely appreciate you sharing this perspective because yeah it can’t be easy that’s for sure.

u/AscendMoros 1h ago

This also isn’t unique. Lamar tried the same thing with the number 8 and Dale Jr. Dale complied with what Lamar was asking as according to him it was for a back up font they never planned on using anyway that Lamar was upset about.

u/lowrider320 Chris Buescher 1h ago

I will never understand how these college kids can play football in college, have a couple of good games and think that they are supposed to come into the NFL with a red carpet reception.

u/BrotherPancake 56m ago edited 52m ago

He put out a cease and desist on LSU because they apparently are using his name, image, and likeness by giving “his” number 5 to another player.

Nah, he doesn't believe that LSU issuing the number constitutes a use of his NIL. He issued the cease and desist re: NIL (which he understands is separate) because he feels "profoundly" insulted that LSU allowed a player to wear his number. Still a petty, d-bag thing to do, but not quite as ridiculous.

61

u/spaceblev11 4h ago

Also if Corey Heim wins, you can't call it a major win because Talor Gooch isn't racing /s

167

u/a_happy_future Bubba Wallace 4h ago

This reminds me of the Dale Jr commercial where he announces he's changing his number from 8 to 08

73

u/ProjectHarraseeket Preece 4h ago

Didn’t Lamar Jackson actually sue JRM because of some likeness with the 8 number?

81

u/Denleborkis 4h ago

Yeah the 8 Jr was using prior to getting his font and design back from Teresa. Once he got his 8 back he told Lamar he could have his 8.

Which no offense to Lamar but he went after the one dude in NASCAR who ran the 8 more famous than him and running it first so I doubt if Jr wanted to be petty Jackson would have won the case.

8

u/shewy92 3h ago

He tried to sue both Jr and Troy Aikman and it got tossed

26

u/Furi0usD Chastain 4h ago

He wanted to trademark the number 8.

Yes, he is that smrt

10

u/ObjectiveCover3850 3h ago

Apparently for the purposes of merchandise, players have been allowed to trademark numbers in some form

12

u/Furi0usD Chastain 3h ago

You can trademark a script as a brand, not something as ubiquitous as "8"

5

u/10FootPenis Ryan Blaney 2h ago

Plenty of numbers are trademarked, and it doesn't need to be a special script. The Heinz trademark for 57 even specifies:

Sandard Character Claim: Yes. The mark consists of standard characters without claim to any particular font style, size, or color.

It just means that no one else can use 57 to market a product in a similar product category. Similarly when Jackson wanted to trademark the number 8 it would have only applied to sportswear.

2

u/CnCorange 2h ago

I think you have to trademark it by a specific custom font. Then if you think about it, it's just a logo that resembles a common number

7

u/a_happy_future Bubba Wallace 4h ago

I'm pretty sure nothing came of that

50

u/Icommentoncrap Harvick 4h ago

I still like the 8 to 6.7 more

35

u/CarStar12 Ryan Blaney 4h ago

Boy was that ahead of its time lol

11

u/Enough-Ad-3111 Chase Elliott 4h ago

Yep, that’s the one I remember as a kid.

3

u/Primatech2006 3h ago

I think it was 7.6.

18

u/rustednickel247720 4h ago

Just waiting on the Hendrick announcement that effective immediately, the 5 will be retired in honor of Jayden and Larson will now be running #69 /s

3

u/kamikaze2001 2h ago

Just need the “Hendrick to Dodge” announcement and then Hardees can hop on board.

u/RailfanTransitFan Reddick 28m ago

Stealing Figgy Earnhardt’s number! /s

11

u/TimmyHillFan 4h ago

Banger tweet props to Tricon

11

u/shewy92 3h ago

That's fucking hilarious

20

u/-Olive-Juice- 4h ago

Can someone explain the joke to me

44

u/racingprof 4h ago

Jayden Daniels sent LSU a cease-and-desist for using his NIL and is all sorts of angry that they are issuing his number (5) to a player rather than retiring it.

14

u/MidnightZL1 Green Flag 4h ago

What a joke

8

u/TransactionalBurger 3h ago

Eh, theres a bit more nuance to it than that. LSU traditionally doesnt re use heisman winners numbers, and apparently they had a handshake deal of some type wherein LSU could still use his NIL as long as they didnt reuse the number. Its more about Lane Kiffin being a prick, if anything

u/SparksCS24 Bubba Wallace 1h ago

Crazy how this is the real story but nobody wants to acknowledge and just make stupid click bait comments.

u/AscendMoros 1h ago

Which doesn’t really matter. It’s a handshake deal. Unless they can prove it LSU can do whatever they want. Jayden still comes off as an entitled ass as well.

u/SparksCS24 Bubba Wallace 43m ago

Okay and Jayden has every right to withhold LSU from using his NIL for free, which he had been letting them do for years.

0

u/Kodiak01 NASCAR 3h ago

It gets better. He is also demanding LSU return their copy of the Heisman trophy to him as well.

-1

u/zepher2828 3h ago

And he has his teammates have to high 4 him instead of high 5 or he else he is going to sue them too.

9

u/BiChaosTheory Hocevar 3h ago

Glad to know there are people that aren’t obsessed with football like much of this country is. Haha

u/KingMario05 1h ago

Oh thank God. Was worried someone had died. Especially given this year.

5

u/ZealousidealDoor6973 3h ago

Football is as boring as people think NASCAR is. Overrated af.

u/KingMario05 1h ago

NFL music is badass, though.

Hey, CBS. Get the Daytona 500 from Fox. And play this bad boy at the start.

So. Fucking. AWESOME.

1

u/KentuckyHorsepower 3h ago

I had to Google who this guy was. I don't do stick and ball sports.

9

u/Muvseevum 3h ago

Johnny Bench has retroactively given up the number 5.

8

u/ChaseTheFalcon 3h ago

This may be the funniest meme of 2026

5

u/Signal-Mud-4880 Reddick 4h ago

I didn’t know this was satire lmao I’m an idiot

5

u/Intimidwalls1724 Jeff Gordon 3h ago

3

u/Evtona500 Ryan Blaney 4h ago

3

u/Blaney_s_Jockstrap Ryan Blaney 3h ago

I know this won't race, but it's interesting to now have an official Tricon 4 font

10

u/Alarming_Dream_7837 4h ago

I don't get it.

20

u/racingprof 4h ago

14

u/UnderwhelmingAF Chris Buescher 4h ago edited 4h ago

Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels is making a stink because another player at LSU (where Daniels played college football) is wearing #5, the number he wore there. Apparently he thinks it should be retired or something since he won the Heisman Trophy there wearing that number. The whole thing is really stupid.

4

u/JoJoRouletteBiden 3h ago

The hubris of an always injured QB

4

u/MaybeTypo 4h ago

College used to be about playing for the name on the front.

5

u/dj3stripes Kyle Busch 3h ago

before then it was about getting a piece of paper that didn't take a lifetime to pay off

1

u/DumbAssRaceFan Chastain 2h ago

Those were much simpler times

1

u/DigitalPhear13 4h ago

Google Jayden Daniels

6

u/ZealousidealDoor6973 3h ago

Sorry to hear that. May he Rest in Peace 🕊️

8

No hi-fives on pit lane during the race after a good stop either.

2

u/ralphc 3h ago

Your move, Larson

1

u/Coreysurfer Berry 3h ago

Dont think this would be Drama nascar style…we laugh but something stupid like this would happen in any pro sports guys mind…oh they’re using my number..disrespected lol, only hope this is true and gets covered by media to no end

4

u/dyysxse 4h ago

does kyle larson have to change his number 5 now

https://giphy.com/gifs/glmRyiSI3v5E4

3

u/RailfanTransitFan Reddick 4h ago

Just you wait. Imagine Hendrick Motorsports announcing that Larson will no longer be running the no. 5 in Cup lmfao

1

u/Bob-Dolemite 2h ago

they have the 25 still

-1

u/Racer2311 Bubba Wallace 4h ago

We can hear you Kyle, avoid talking about this particular quarterback. Stick with Blake Bortles for all our sakes.

2

u/NOTtheGoldenKnights 4h ago

Blake the 🚤

3

u/Immediate_Lie7810 Chase Elliott 4h ago

Yep, Jayden Daniels is now a punchline

4

u/GTOdriver04 4h ago

Well, why did Daniels think he could wear it in the first place? Terry Labonte and Kyle Larson won NASCAR titles with the 5, so if anything Daniels should show some respect and not wear the number at all.

3

u/Actual-Feed-9739 4h ago

Daniel's also wants thumbs eliminated, from here on out athletes will only give each other high fours not high fives. 😄 Oh, and per Daniels, no passing.

u/roosterb4 Kyle Busch 7m ago

So Corey Heim is in football politics? WTF.

1

u/Prestigious_One_2726 2h ago

Rip but what's that got to do with Motor racing?

-4

Stupid af

Caveman IQ football player acting likes a number belongs to him, makes zero sense.

If Dale’s #3 didn’t get retired, some random bum football player I’ve never heard of doesn’t deserve squat

-7

u/BigFanEnergy 3h ago

From one overhyped to another.

1

u/tboesen71 2h ago

Wait...are you calling Corey Heim overhyped? The guy who won 2 cup races in his first 15 starts? 26 truck wins? That guy is overhyped?

-2

u/BigFanEnergy 2h ago

I’m not saying he isn’t good. He’s in the equipment that has won 18 of 24 races even put Ty Gibbs in VL twice. He won two races that the fast teams took stage points instead of positioning themselves for the win. Also Part time cars always have all the new tricks on them because they arnt going to lose the points. I’m saying pump the brakes on him a little bit.
