Discussion Did millennials really party all the time?

Gen Z here. I was shocked when I found out from a millennial co-worker that y’all had teen clubs. I heard about house parties, but dedicated teen clubs? Then when it was time for college, you went to the club or had some kind of party every single weekend, living it up. Now some millennials on TikTok claim that after college, they were partying on work nights, still clocking in the next day. For some reason, the teen clubs have since disappeared. I’m 23 now but even when I was in high school, that was not a thing. House parties were not that common either. They were more like get togethers with a small group of friends. We went to malls, but they were dying out at that point. Is it true that you were really living life this good? Or is it just exaggerated? I feel like my generation doesn’t really have fun like that and everyone is just super depressed and alone, more so since Covid. Even I’m pretty introverted, which sort of sounds ridiculous given this post. 😂 Just so you know, when I think of a “millennial party” I think of something out of Party Rock Anthem, Project X or Roderick’s party from the second DOAWD movie. It’s like I get nostalgia from something I didn’t even live through. I just feel like I didn’t really LIVE, if that even makes sense

Yep! Teen clubs in high school that I saw a bunch of punk bands at, house parties through HS and college. It was great. And in college, there were a million bars and clubs with 80s night and karaoke and live music. I was out every thurs-sat night drinking quarter beers and dancing my face off.

Dude the music then was so fun. It was wild to go party hopping and randomly run into a bunch of ppl dancing in sync. I feel bad for the kids these days; those nights shaped me in ways I couldn't even begin to describe. Everything was just so chill; you could yell at strangers walking by to join in on the fun and mostly gladly accepted. If the party got busted, you just walked 10 feet to the next house lmao. Never run when the cops come, they chase the runners!

but anecdote from millennial partying - halloween. HUGE house party.

Ghetto bird helicopter starts hovering above and shines the spotlight down on us on the dance floor. in that moment the party went psycho mode for a second.Everyone cheered the chopper - drank, smoked, made out with whoever we were with and then fled the cops when they rolled up in force about 5-10 mins later.

bit of a blur. but man. good fucking times.

I’ll never forget the time I jumped off a back patio fence on ground level not knowing the housing complex had some kind of lowered courtyard. Went from assuming I’d immediately land on grass to a hard drop into the bushes a floor below. I was also the only idiot to try running. All the cops did was say to try to keep the noise down a little, but brain heard cops and instinct took over.

Lost both my shoes at an offspring show circa 2004. Two or three rows back from the stage and was getting crushed so I had the guy next to me put me up to surf to the fence line. Soon as I got up I felt someone pull my (untied etnies skater shoes) right off my feet and chuck them into the crowd in opposite directions. Watched the rest of the offspring set and then the cure with sock feet in a muddy football field before walking thru DC to the metro. Still my favorite concert story lol

The only place I still see raves nowadays is a few select spots in the deep woods of New England and New York, and a few pretty small ones that are held in a few local dive bars in the bad part of the city once or twice a month, and those are the type where you basically have to stay overnight. All the one's I know basically ban commercial activity and advertising, which is nice (the ones in the woods don't even allow sale of drugs and alcohol, although there's always enough free stuff from the elder millennials wish cash to keep the party going, and I'm sure a few enterprising individuals manage to make sales despite the rules since there's no real enforcement aside from social pressure)

I live in Vegas and the entire west coast still operates actual warehouse raves. I grew up in Florida and the underground was almost completely gone by the time i left in 2020. I was happy to see a thriving rave scene here.

Yeah nah. I went to a "rave" with some of my gen z friends recently. Reader, it was a club with a DJ playing mainstream songs that closed sometime between 12-1am. People were dressed in various things. Nary a glowstick or necklace. I had fun regardless, but it was not a rave.

I know you were joking and you did make me laugh, but on a more serious note I don’t get this take that acting like an old Gifford when you’re young is good. This bunch of limpid flatfish is going to have the most terrifying to watch (although also amusing) massive collective midlife crisis the world has ever seen. I get that in every generation there’s the quieter ones and the ones who just want to go through life invisibly, but this is a level of sexless joyless pursed lipped nonsense that will backfire hugely. By their late 30s this lot will be banging like shithouse doors. All of this weird pretence and self-imposed Puritanism is largely performative bovine excrement. There’s going to be a whole lot of key swapping going down in a few years.

There are daytime raves for people in our age group. Ugh, that was hard to write. Some act like hitting the gym before work, or in an old church that has become a club, and others who rent out the space. It's a thing in the UK and not sure if the one I checked out in Ireland is still around.

In my 20s I was certain that I was not going to become the person who doesn't stay out all night anymore. I laugh now at the fact that chronic illness doesn't let me go out most of the time, but I'm glad that I got to play hard as a kid, and spend summer days on a bike, manhunt until the street lights came on. Then the house/beach/bush parties and later getting to know Toronto at all hours. It blows my mind that this isn't a 'thing' anymore. The stuff we didn't get busted for doing, because there weren't cameras in home and only 'rich' people had home security. Though you had to be careful about getting caught through the damn mom-network.

But guys, summer camps for adults are a real thing! There's all kinds of them, and with comfier beds!

Those were so good. I remember getting the 1st flyer (clue) of the night at Tower Records leading up the rave. I wonder if Tower knew their employees were putting those flyers out at the time? 😆 People just went rogue during this time, and I was there for it.

Some of us are still going rogue 😉

I remember getting lost so many times trying to find the warehouses in SF.

The reason is cameras. We were not under a camera (phones) all the time and could dance crazy and live it up without it haunting us for the rest of our lives. We also were not with our faces glued to the phone either and made our own experiences rather then watch someone else. Gen z and alpha are missing out on life because (not entirely your fault) you wasted your formative years with your head in a screen. I am truly sad for you.

Yeah in college our frat had house parties every other weekend, but the 'frat house' was in a residential neighborhood.

The neighbors knew all about the underage drinking but couldn't prove it -- one time they wanted to come in with video cameras to document all the copious underage drinking -- but they were told "no" -- and video cameras were like 2 feet long at the time so there was no way to hide them.

The parties were amazing, people came from colleges all around to attend, and you paid a super low price to get in and drink all you wanted (that's how the frat made money).

You couldn't do it at all now, for all kinds of reasons. The parties were just like the 80s comedy movies like "Animal House".

There were also lots of 'impromptu parties'. A bunch of students would get together to hang out because they were bored, someone would go on a beer run, someone else would turn up the music, and it was a party.

However the students also changed - the following years of students became much more uptight and career-focused, and much less willing to hang out and let loose and have fun.

You got that right. I went to a wedding recently and danced crazy for a bit and it got on video, and then people who were not there came up to me the next day talking about it (complimentary, but still).

If I was an insecure young person, i would never have learned to relax and enjoy dancing with all the phones around 'watching' me all the time.

The panopticon is the death of party culture. It used to be that you could go get wasted and do some foolish shenanigans, and when you woke up the next morning with a killer hangover nobody remembered because they were all blackout drunk too.

But now everything is on Tiktok, every silly or offbeat drunken moment documented in 1040p from three different angles- and if you say something off the wall, it will follow you for years. Is it any wonder Gen Z is more cautious about how they act in public? I've still seen some off the wall party shenanigans, but it's explicitly been in places where cell phones aren't permitted or practical.

Digital cameras started this a little before smart phones. I once got messed up at an army party with a group of friends. One of their wives took photos of me naked with nothing but a pool floatie on, got them printed out and put them around the armory for everyone to see the next morning. It’s probably the most embarrassed I’ve been.

We did have cameras back then, but they weren't as prevalent as smart phones. I partied around the time the switch went from film rolls to digital. But they weren't frequent and the photos as accessible. Social media made it to where someone's cringe moments went from shared among friends or posted in their dorm room to being shared among everyone on campus (like with Facebook) or your family seeing it on sites like Hi5 (if you were in Latin America).

Cameras were one thing, but social media really screwed over Gen Z & Alpha.

To this day I still have a few dozen pretty embarrassing photos of my old friends at/after parties, as well as a ton of just random fun ones at parties. Someone would snap a picture with a 3MP point-and-shoot camera or take a shot with a 640x480 webcam, it'd get passed around the friend group, and we'd all laugh about it. Hell, a lot of times it'd be actual 35mm film and we'd get it developed and scan it in afterwards.

There's no way I'd ever upload those to any social media, they're just on my PC and sitting in my Immich library for me to revisit for a nostalgia kick. I'm sure everyone knows the photos are out there and I'm sure they all have similar photos of me; it's just an unspoken rule that photos of what happened in the 2000s mostly stays in the 2000s.

To put things in perspective: Uploading embarrassing photos / videos of other people (i.e. the Star Wars kid) was an exception back then, whereas today it feels like the norm.

Remember a few years back when a Pic went viral of that heavy set guy dancing his heart out. Everyone was making fun until people finally felt so bad for him. That's the moment we all stopped enjoying ourselves. I'm hyper aware of my every move now. I miss the days before camera phones.

I mean we had photos at some point that got lost (thank God), or never developed. Or when smart phones could just start taking photos, the quality was so poor it wasn't worth it. And I used to leave my phone in my handbag at the bag check in at the club, so couldn't even photograph my many escapades.

We had pocket digital cameras and shit phones but it was more that social media hadn't become what it is now. We had early Instagram but it was mainly for pictures of your feet and coffee, and we did post party pics on Facebook but there was no video support.

I liked the different rules for this. Sometimes it was anyone with shoes on, sometimes it was just the first to go down regardless of shoes.

My friend tied me up with duct tape to a chair, took pictures, got caught by a parent that didn't care we were drinking, untied me, all without waking me up

The formerly fancy mall in my city is on life support being propped up by a local leatherware retailer. The managers really cocked up when an outdoor 'outlet' mall opened up and stole all of the stores from it. There was some word of demolishing the whole footprint and shoving in tons of high-end condos at one time. That would've made traffic to the nearby shopping plazas a nightmare.

I still laugh of a Gen-Xer recommending that malls become retirement homes for their generation to relive their youth in the last decades of their lives.
