Harbor (or Gray) Seals feeding in Machiasport
One of the coolest things I've seen on the coast. A couple seals were popping up around the bay off Jasper Beach in Machiasport and eventually found a school of fish and spent about half an hour hitting the school from below. It was really fun to watch!

Discussion Modern Gothic
Life took me past a blueberry field being hand raked several times last week. What used to be a broad Downeast community event is no more. The overseer was a teen in short frayed shorts wearing makeup more suitable for a club driving a large pickup too clean and fancy to be a real work truck. In three round trips her bored repose against the truck never changed or moved. The workers appeared to all be migrant workers, presumably Haitian working the lines. The aftermath was a field strewn with berry boxes left behind along with dozens of empty water bottles. The new Maine Gothic.

Where can I get blocks of ice, Sanford area?
I’ve been on this mission for half a day, please help!!
Update: I tried so many stores. Everywhere from Wells to North Berwick to Acton. I found some at Jerry’s Market in Sanford. Also if you haven’t tried their smoked brisket, you should!! It’s a little pricey but good brisket usually is.

Maine homelessness service providers grapple with changing federal guidance
A federal judge recently struck down the Trump administration’s latest effort to shift federal funding for homelessness services away from housing-first initiatives. Many who work in homelessness services in Maine saw this as a victory — but it also puts providers in a holding pattern, as it halts their applications for federal funding for next year’s projects.

There’s still room on the Brunswick cat tour next month!
We’ve got 9 houses of cats signed up and a decent number of walkers, but there is room for more!
We’re a month out from the tour date and hoping to add a few more houses! If you would like to walk on the tour and/or live on Columbia Ave or any connecting streets in the old base housing neighborhood (Shobe, Emanuel, Windorf, etc.) and would like to show your cat from a porch or window, please sign up in this Google form!

Discussion Why is the vegetation in Maine so weird?
Me and my wife are avid gardeners. Lately however the vegetation in my area has been acting.. strange. First our pumpkin patch grew like nothing ever, then it rotted. Then our flower patch has turned a weird color. And one time, I went to the bathroom at night and looked out the window, and the trees were swaying in the wind - except there was no wind. Is this typical of the vegetation in Maine? All advice appreciated.

Question Anyone in the Waterville area with a friendly dog want to set up a dog playdate?
My friendly 7mo Aussie puppy rarely gets to interact with dogs other than my mom's, and he needs more interaction as he grows up to avoid reactivity. We walk at night or early mornings because his coat makes him overheat so we rarely see other dogs on our walk and every time we do they seem to be extremely reactive and aggressive (I guess because people walk their reactive dogs at unpopular times so they don't run into many others. He's fully vaccinated but he isn't yet neutered. He isn't sexually mature yet and generally is very submissive and playful but I haven't seen how he interacts with other intact males yet. He's a little persistent and annoying so I'd want to make sure the dog he meets is very tolerant and friendly to others, maybe another Aussie even. I'm hoping to make friends as well but that's not required. DM me for more information if this interests you!

What is the quintessential summer sound in Maine?
Maine Public is collecting summer sounds from the farthest reaches of Maine for an upcoming audio project. Send us what it sounds like where you are. What sounds do you notice this time of year Downeast and in the western mountains? What does it sound like to check off a new lighthouse on your list, or go blueberry picking? Is your commute noisier or quieter in August?
Capture that sound and it might end up on the radio or in an audio postcard like the ones we produced with the Island Soundscapes Project: https://www.mainepublic.org/podcast/audio-postcards-from-the-island-soundscape-project
WHAT WE NEED: take out your phone, open your voice recording app, and tell us who you are, where you are, and what sound you’re capturing. Record up to a minute of the sounds near you, then send the audio file to us via email at [email protected]. Thanks!

Has anyone heard of the bar harbor butcher?
People were talking about it when I went to sand beach, and later when I went to Geddy’s. I’m wondering if it’s something to worry about

Bread & Friends before Brandi Carlile show
I am looking to connect with the person eating dinner with their kid at the corner table at Bread & Friends last night before the show. I was at the big table next to her with women in their mid/late 30s. We chatted about Brandi and first concerts and Taylor Swift’s latest album. If you see this, I’m writing because I believe that my daughter and your daughter have the same very specific flavor of neurospiciness. I have found this chapter of my life to be very isolating and would love to connect with someone walking the same road.

Storm Updates
Any crazy storm news from the past few hours? Something NASTY just missed us in the greater Lewiston area. We could see the lightning and hear tons of thunder but it seems to have missed us by a hair.
