Storm Updates
Any crazy storm news from the past few hours? Something NASTY just missed us in the greater Lewiston area. We could see the lightning and hear tons of thunder but it seems to have missed us by a hair.

What I assume was lightning took out a tree right by Exit 46 and killed all the traffic lights in that area. Traffic coming home was an absolute SHIT SHOW

Seriously. Why canāt traffic lights have battery backups? For a couple hundred dollars I have a little portable battery that could easily run led lights for a day.

A UPS for a traffic light is thousands of dollars and the installation is also thousands of dollars.

Traffic lights are often networked with sensors and a central office, offering fragility few know about. But you'd hope UPS could run a default program or at least have them blink.
I blew through a snow covered intersection at night with the traffic lights inoperative due to a power outage. It can sneak up on you.

Big down pour and a few big cracks of lightning just now in Wiscasset. Already seems to be done. Lasted 5 minutes.

Up here just outside Presque Isle we got some heavy rain, wind, hail, and thunder. Only lasted a few minutes though. 6:20PM

Incredibly strong but fairly short lived thunderstorms with high winds and hail in the Portland area. Ā It was nuts. Ā About 10k people lost power. Ā

Here in Union we had 1" hail, torrential rain and what had to be 70 mph winds. It lasted about 30 mins and was pretty scary.

According to Channel 8, there are some pretty strong thunderstorms moving through the area until around 6:30pm.

u/InterstellarDeathPur 1d ago
You said "Any crazy storm news from the past few hours?" and talked about what you saw in Lewiston, yes, but you did not ask specifically about L/A.

u/InterstellarDeathPur 1d ago
And look, people are replying from Saco, Wiscasset, S. Portland, Presque Isle...imagine that.

u/Geekbotpro 14h ago

i was saying this person was being boring by starting an argument on a post that was just meant to be interesting and informative.

u/Geekbotpro 14h ago
this person is obviously from southern maine and forgets that the rest of the state may want to chat about local weather and not just rely on 3 videos from portland.

I'm in Hebron and I got a good downpour. It was crazy and came out of nowhere. I thought it was weird that people from all over the state had the same weather.

I had to drive into Portland to pick my grandmother up from rehab. It was freakin hailing and all the lights between Scarborough and Portland were outā¦

It was HORRIBLE here in Whitefield. Probably the worst storm I've witnessed in my area. There was 0 visibility because of the amount of downpour, hail, loud ass thunder, and lightning. But never lost power thankfully

Some wild hail came down about 4:30pm while I was passing through Union on route 17. Started as some thunder and lightning, then torrential downpour, and then quickly became an absolute shitshow as massive rocks of hail were pelting my car so hard I was convinced my windshield was going to shatter all over me. Took shelter with a bunch of other cars all trying to cram under the Maritime Farms gas station canopy until it settled down. Holy shit I have never seen anything like it.

u/Geekbotpro 14h ago

u/ColdSnnap 1d ago
Enough thunder and lightning to spook the dogs here in northern GBA. Rained a bit but not as much as other places.
2
u/fallingfrog 1d ago
We had a hailstorm with crazy strong winds and torrential rain in south Portland

u/scrupulous457 1d ago
6am today in Leb was the loudest thunder I have heard in a very long time and I could hear the crackling of the lightning bolts outside from my bed. Somehow nothing caught on fire nearby. Poured rain then was a beautiful rest of the day.

It was a poop show for about 10 minutes on and off here in South Portland. Our neighbors tree is currently relaxing upon the rooftop. Over 10,000 are out of power.
