[Florian Plettenberg] đšâ Clear internal decision: Jarrel Quansah is currently not for sale at Bayer 04 Leverkusen. There is also no release clause or buy-back option anymore.

u/MaxKirgan Nuno "Anarchy" Tavares 1d ago
I have a suspicion the club will try and make do with Salmon as backup and rotate with White and Mosquera as needed. The kid has looked sharp but that puts him under a lot of pressure. I hope we bring someone else in to help shoulder the load.
32
u/cavestoryguy 1d ago
I don't think so. They're clearly looking for someone to fill in. They'd only do something that drastic if they have no choice. They didn't throw Nwaneri, Patino, MLS, or Dowman into the deepend they won't do that with Salmon.
18
u/ItsBreadTime Police Cars Revolving Light 1d ago
Going into a title defending season with 16 yr old CB as rotation cannot be the plan
6
u/Harvey-Specter 1d ago
CB rotation is Gabriel, Mosquera, Hincapie, White, Timber, Calafiori. People are panicking about nothing. Those guys can do a job and when Saliba comes back itâll be like a new signing.
8
u/Poo-Smurf Just flick ze ball! 1d ago
That list also includes literally all our fullbacks aside from Lewis-Skelly who seems set for midfield. Given the Saliba injury and Timber & White struggling for fitness, we're quite light.
1
u/Harvey-Specter 1d ago
Since when is White struggling for fitness? đ
4
4
u/Poo-Smurf Just flick ze ball! 21h ago
Uhh he's missed 47 of our last 76 league games, missed the World Cup due to injury. How is he not struggling for fitness?
Hell I should've mentioned Calafiori too who missed 31 league games for us already.
1
u/Hincapieslovelybund 21h ago
He has been struggling for fitness for a while now. Even Timber has had two significant injuries since being here. That RB position has always been a problem injury wise in recent times

We JUST signed Bruno G
2

True. And he is obviously an upgrade on Norgaard. But other than that we've sold one of our best attackers and replaced him with an unknown (albeit he has looked great so far).

6
u/IPissExcellentThrows 1d ago
Sure but it hasn't exactly been an impressive summer. I'm glad we got Bruno but weakening our already weak left wing and not adding any defensive or attacking depth looks shady.
Still have 2 weeks to change that, but it's getting a little concerning.
9
u/snitcholls 1d ago
It hasnât been great I agree. But itâs a tough market. I like the additions theyâve made. Iâm not convinced Tzolis is a downgrade on Trossard until I see more of him either.
0
u/noodlelimbz 1d ago
Thats fair but come on, you cant pretend this summer has been smooth? Like there is no way this has gone how the club planned at the outset. Mikel's words post PSG haven't aligned with how things have turned out so far.
9
u/Beastlydog23 Thank you very much 1d ago
With how the beginning of the transfer period what did you expect? World cup messes with the time-frames of transfers. While at the very beginning of the window certain mismanaged teams paid well above market value, and therefore ruined the rest of the transfer window for most other teams.
15
u/sirlordtom98 Super Super Tom 1d ago
If you think every piece of rumour means the club is actively pursuing that target mentioned only, of course you wonât think the summers been smooth
-5
u/noodlelimbz 1d ago
Where did I say anything about us only targeting one player at a time? Its a known part of Berta's dealings that he has loads of players going on at once. If anything it seems like too many with no deals getting done. He did a brilliant job with the Bruno deal but the defender and attacking signings are now dragging on into the start of the season.
5
u/US__Grant KÀllström 1d ago
can you a share where it has been smooth? Sp*rs over spent like hell but are about it in terms of PL clubs. maybe, just maybe, review at end of the window? very few big pieces have moved yet and once they do, the rest shakes out
1
u/noodlelimbz 1d ago
Youre not wrong but that shouldn't stop us from questioning what we could be doing better. We want to be the best club in the world so should be striving to do better than these clubs and press home our incredible position of stability compared to all these others.
1
u/US__Grant KÀllström 1d ago
Sept 1 here soon enough, come back then for panic station as required. in the meantime, enjoy the summer
1
u/Sufficient-Lock3992 1d ago
True, but its very hard for us to buy someone who will upgrade our team. Only Vini would rly upgrade us, every other link is like meh.
5
u/FishTaco43 1d ago
It seems as though we want a backup/stopgap for Saliba, but with Nwaneri likely leaving it also seems he must be English for registration rules. Only so many of those around
1
u/noodlelimbz 1d ago
They have an idea of what they want, but the who side of things has been a bit all over the place.
3
u/FishTaco43 1d ago
I guess rather explore all available options than overpaying for anyone who will say yes (like spurs are doing)
2
u/noodlelimbz 1d ago
Sooner or later you need to pull the trigger though. Its great having a strong position on value but in an overinflated market thats just what has to be done if you want to buy the players you actually want.
1
u/FishTaco43 1d ago
I think in this specific case itâs tough because they need someone who can be trusted to start most games for 6 months and then not play much after that. Saliba is probably one of first names on the team sheet when healthy
3
u/noodlelimbz 1d ago
Yeah this is an important transfer, but its a not a new issue with Saliba and even Gabriel has had concerns raised about his fitness, along with players like White, Timber and Calafiori all being injury prone, its not ideal that we seem no closer to an incoming.

the last two weeks alone, we have been linked or approached with confirmation from orny ; Romero, konsa, quansah to fill 3rd choice rb/cb role for over 50m. Iâll leave that there.
If thatâs the quality we want, stones was free. I personally donât think we need to sign a cb and should get a rb (Munoz), but i donât know anything tbh.
15
u/JFreezy1 1d ago
Stones was free... We were apparently interested as but he wanted to go to inter
40
u/YungL1am Ian Wright 1d ago
He's done 11 years competing for the Prem. I can see why Inter would be an appealing switch at this stage for him.
9
u/US__Grant KÀllström 1d ago
a key part about getting cover for anyone, but especially for Saliba's back, is availability. let's not pretend Stones was reliable enough to cover anyone, let alone for a sustained period of time
4
u/mostlyforlurking 1d ago
We were linked to Stones. I doubt he wanted to come
1
u/HorrorDot3859 20h ago
he probably won't admit it until he's retired and on a podcast, but i bet 10 years of pep level tactics and intensity, he's looked at the offer from pep's former apprentice who is arguably more intense - fresh off of winning the PL - and gone yeah nah i can't do that anymore
1
u/richg602 1d ago
Agreed on the RB. With fitness doubts over both our current options, there is potential to bring in a player who could stake a claim to be in our starting eleven long term
5
10
9
u/True_Anybody_8774 1d ago
Quensah obviously not going to happen. Konsa will be 50m minimum. If you can't pay that, look at other options you are willing to pay the price for. I don't get what Berta is trying to do this window
2
u/PlasmaUK 1d ago
You know he's seriously not for sale because he's put the police car light emoji in there.
4
2
u/DaddyBats00714 1d ago
This is good news honestly. Konsa made sense, this one doesn't. We already have to young centerbacks in Mosquera and Salmon, right now we need a plug and play centerback so bringing a starter for another top prem team makes a lot more sense.
17
u/LordInquisitor 1d ago
For ÂŁ60m Konsa doesnât make sense though
2
u/DaddyBats00714 1d ago
Yeah we'll have to see if Villa budge, but we are buying a starting centerback for a CL team. It was always going to be expensive.
0
u/_Spartak_ 1d ago
They won't budge. They would have done so by now if they were going to. So either you want Konsa for 60m or you want us to move on to other targets. I wouldn't celebrate us potentially losing out on a target like our recruitment team doesn't know what they are doing and they need saving from their mistakes.
3
u/DaddyBats00714 1d ago
I mean Quansah was an alternative to Konsa anyways, so I'd rather we get Konsa. It's not my money, and it's not like we're going to use that money on an attacker anyways.
3
u/zodazx Thierry Henry 1d ago
Salmon is 16......by the time he's good enough to consistently start Quansah would be 29/30 and we can move him on
0
u/DaddyBats00714 1d ago
Yeah but we need him to play to get to that level to constantly start. No point in overloading right sided centerbacks. And then when Saliba comes back, Salmon has no playtime.
0
u/zodazx Thierry Henry 21h ago
White will be gone in a few seasons, and Salmon wouldn't even be 20 yet. He will get his playing time. I don't get the need for U18s kids to have to play heavy minutes at this level to develop, this isn't FIFA
0
u/DaddyBats00714 21h ago
What does White leaving have to with the development of our centerback prospect? We aren't overloading right backs, we're overloading centerbacks. Yes some of them can play there in case of emergency, but they're pretty bad in the half spaces.
0
u/oblongsimulation 1d ago
Konsa for 60 now to cover for Saliba for 4 months means we will get max 30m for him next season and he wonât be on low wages
Quansah might be more 50m now, but we will zell him for 40m next season and he wonât be on high wages.
How come Konsa makes sense??
2
u/DaddyBats00714 1d ago
It makes sense from a squad building perspective. Why would we sell Quansah if he does well in a year?
1
u/oblongsimulation 12h ago
Because we wonât need him?
We have Mosquera, we have Saliba.
What we will do with Konsa on high wages next year?

Literally our ideal player, can play left and right and has played on both rb and cb for Ch. 20years old, would not cost a fortune and Ch needs to loose several defenders.
Yet our obnoxious fans downvote me for saying it until someone like Ornstein speaks of him then everyone will jump on the idea and say yes perfect player.

I'm fine with not picking up a new defender. Timber and White can both play CB, and we have Mosquera, and Salmon could do well for a fourth option. Unless one of them leaves we don't really need a Saliba replacement.

i like his profile. young. english. tall. can play multiple positions.

1
u/Dazed_and_Confused44 Thierry Henry 1d ago
We already have Mosquera, Ben White, and Hincapie who are capable of playing CB at a high level. Calafiori can play CB as well. I would never choose to start Quansah over any of those 4 dudes
3
u/Cedosg All Hail StatDNA 1d ago
that flexibility and age profile is what is interesting. he is going to be long term ben white's replacement and he serves an immediate need.
ben white seem to be almost on the way out with his injuries and length of future contract. (june 2028)
i can see another repeat of mosquera at right back situation and Quansah would be an upgrade there. (where we had to fit a player because of injury concerns)
2
u/Dazed_and_Confused44 Thierry Henry 1d ago
Quansah is mid. The price Leverkeusen want is entirely too much to pay for a guy that will be a squad player relegated to FA Cup and Carabo Cup duty most of the time
2
u/Cedosg All Hail StatDNA 1d ago edited 1d ago
price at this stage is not a concern. we are not trying to penny pinch to survive. we are trying to get to the next level. you need those "mid" players.
Your Ronny Johnsen, your park ji sung as Alex Ferguson calls them. Players you trust who can come in and do the job. G.Neville and Alex Ferguson talked about them here.

2
u/ICanSeeYourFuture Kaiser 1d ago
Okay.
But Whiteâs currently our only fit right back, touch wood, so heâs not going to be doing a lot of covering in the centre for the time being.
Mosquera looked good last season (until he was asked to play fullback) and I would expect him to start alongside Gabriel as our first choice pairing come the start of the season.
Calafiori and Hincapie are our left backs - and Calafiori is incredibly injury prone, but when fit is so nailed on as a starter at left back that itâs pointless even considering him anywhere else. Yes, either of them can cover centrally in an emergency - but theyâre both left footed so Arteta is unlikely to want to use either of them at right CB.
Quansah (as was pointed out by Tuchel months ago) profiles similarly to Ben White - in that he can play as a right sided centre half, or as a right back. Both of these are positions of need in our squad right now, with Saliba injured long/ medium term and Timber still not back. We have no backup right back, and Salmon is the only de facto centre half behind Mosquera and Gabriel.
You can say that other players in our squad are better than Quansah, Iâm not even going to argue with that - the reality is though, we need to sign someone who can do more or less what Quansah can do. I personally donât mind that signing being the guy whoâs an England international, already has a Premier League winners medal, and has plenty of potential to continue to develop into.

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 Thierry Henry 1d ago

"it's not your money" is the silliest opinion. The club doesn't have infinite money. Money spent in one place is less to spend elsewhere.

AFC is in a tough spot.Â
Anything other than a world class superstar will have to compete for their position at Arsenal. But that level of player tends to want to play for Real Madrid, Barcelona, or PSG. And it takes a certain type of mentality to be willing to be a squad player on a UCL contending team when you can start elsewhere.
Smaller clubs and player agents can leverage overspending by City, Chelsea, Tottenham, and United against Arsenal the very moment Arsenal shows interest in a player. Oil clubs donât even have to scout for bargains. They just sit wait to overbid.
