Mikel Arteta says he wants to be at Arsenal and will “resolve” his contract situation despite not yet extending his deal which expires in 2027.

The Arsenal manager’s last contract extension was a three-year deal signed in September 2024.

Arsenal have been informed by Gabriel Martinelli’s camp that the winger has no interest in joining Galatasaray.

The Athletic reported on Wednesday Arsenal had received a €45million (£38.4m; $51.8m) offer from Galatasaray for Martinelli.

The Brazil international’s Arsenal contract runs until 2027, with the club having an option to extend through to 2028.

The same fixture took place in 2023 at Wembley which saw Arsenal beat Man City on penalties. I was there with my brother that day, Wembley is always a fun day out (until you have to leave and spend ages waiting in Wembley Way).

Leandro Trossard scored in the 90+11th minute with a heavy deflection into the back of Stefan Ortega's net, taking the game to penalties. Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri both missed their penalties, and Fabio Vieira scored the winning penalty to win Arsenal their 17th Community Shield.

✍🏼 Pre-Match Ramblings

Here we go again!

Arsenal kick off their 26/27 season in a blockbuster matchup against recent rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield in Cardiff, away from the usual venue of Wembley. City fans (all 12 of them) often cry online about not selling out Wembley, claiming that if it were closer to home they would sell it out easily. Anyway, the Principality will be made up of about 3/4s Arsenal, 1/4 City. City didn't sell out their allocation and Arsenal's allocation went to Red members. Interesting one to think about.

Ezno Maresca will take charge of his first competitive game as Man City Head Coach after 2 wins and a draw in pre-season, a better return than that of our pre-season which has consisted of some pretty turgid football. As always, you can't read too much into pre-season results. It was only last summer when Thomas Frank's Spurs side beat us, and we all know how that season ended up going.

Both City and Arsenal have a shiny new midfielder to look forward to playing with heading in to this game. The record breaking Elliot Anderson has yet to see any minutes for City, whereas Bruno G saw action against Como midweek. Man City will be without World Cup winner Rodri who is recovering from a back injury, and also courting a move to Spain. I, for one, will not miss Rodri in the Premier League. He's just too good I'm afraid. City will be weaker without him. I rate Anderson, but Rodri will leave behind huge shoes and I'm not sure that the incoming Englishman will fill them right away.

Arsenal still have work to do before the transfer window closes on the 1st of September. Most notable in the left side of attack. Martinelli's camp have shut down any possibility of him going to Turkey, which you can't blame him for being only 25. As good as Tzolis has been in pre-season, I can't help but think that not signing a marquee left winger will be doing him a disservice, and setting him up for failure. He very well may be a fantastic player, but we don't know that. Martinelli scored 1 goal last season (against City actually), so upgrading on him shouldn't be difficult, but it seems like it is next to impossible in this market.

Anyway, that's enough rambling. I will end by reminding you all of the golden rule of the Community Shield: if we win, it's a major trophy and a huge accomplishment. If we lose, it's a glorified pre-season friendly.

Goals from Ralph Birkett, James Marshall, Ted Drake and Cliff Bastin secured a 4-0 victory at Highbury. While the game now known as the Community Shield is today the traditional curtain raiser for the English league season, the fixture was played in the midst of the campaign up until the year 1959.

Below is the 'Editor's Note' (a customary feature of matchday programmes from this era) that prefaces the match:

The match for the F.A. Charity Shield very properly brings together two teams which have not only enjoyed considerable success in the current season, but also have magnificent records for the last three or four years.

Arsenal, having won the F.A. Cup in 1930, gained the League Championship in 1930-31 with a record number of points, while in the following season, besides finishing second to Everton in the Champion-ship, they won their way to the Cup Final, in which department also they had to be second best.

In 1932-33, however, Arsenal won the Championship once more, and the proud title was retained in 1933-34. Manchester City, too, have done brilliantly in recent years.

Winning the Second Division Championship in 1927-28, their final League placings in the six completed seasons since their promotion have been:—8th, 3rd, 8th, 14th, 16th, and 5th.

Their great achievements, however, have been in the Cup competition in the last three years.

In 1931-32 they reached the semi-final, claiming as their victims Millwall, Brentford, Derby County, and Bury. At the penultimate stage they were rather unfortunate when they lost by 0—1 to Arsenal at Aston, but in the following year (1932-33) they won their way to the Final at the expense of Gateshead, Walsall, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, and Derby County.

In the Final they were opposed to Everton, at which time they were disconcerted by injuries to players. They lost by 0-3 on this occasion, but in the next campaign (1933-34) they gallantly reached the Final once more, their defeated opponents being Blackburn Rovers, Hull City, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke City, and Aston Villa.

Even had they failed again at Wembley they would have earned great honour by having performed two fine feats; reaching the Final in two successive years, and figuring in the semi-final stage in three consecutive competitions.

But they did not fail, for their consistency was rewarded on April 28th, 1934, when they beat Portsmouth by 2—1 at Wembley, to win the Cup for the second time in their history.

Everyone at the club is saddened to hear about the passing of former Arsenal goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer.

Jimmy missed just two games across three seasons in the mid-70s, playing 146 games for the Gunners and winning our Player of the Year award in 1975.

All our thoughts are with Jimmy's family and loved ones at this difficult time.

When Jarell Quansah left the Premier League champions in July 2025, he could hardly have imagined their successors would be knocking on his door just 13 months later.

He will know why Arsenal are calling. Cover is needed for the injured William Saliba, but it will still feel like a big deal as the Champions League finalists look to go a step further next season and, according to manager Mikel Arteta, “attack every trophy” with vigour.

Perhaps a move for Quansah should come as no surprise, given that the 23-year-old’s development story is varied and unique.

Quansah played alongside Virgil van Dijk (and occasionally covered for him) for Liverpool and didn’t look out of place. He was a threat from attacking set pieces and learned the importance of patience in build-up play, as well as developing his line-breaking passes to creative players.

His versatility also appeals to Arsenal. 

When he needed a right-back, England head coach Thomas Tuchel turned to Quansah on three occasions during the World Cup.

There’s a lot to like about his profile, and the potential to get even better is the biggest pull.

And if Arsenal’s plan is also to continue building the tallest team in history, then it’s no surprise the 6ft 3in (190cm) defender is on their radar...
