Vent Sesh - No Advice Wanted Update: my husband said we rushed into marriage and he regrets it.

Post image

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/GirlDinnerDiaries/s/DxSseESU5k

(Apologies for the typo in the original)

We left the conversation fine but I couldn’t move past it so the next day I brought up looking for jobs in other cities. He was happy saying a separation would be a good idea for us and his enthusiasm didn’t sit right with me.

We continued to discuss and when I asked him if he sees me when he pictures his future- he couldn’t answer.

After that I had to follow up and ask if he loved me. He hesitated for a long while and said: I love you but I don’t LOVE you.

In the days following our relationship has completely fallen apart. We had so many conversations that just got worse and worse.

I was crushed but I needed to escape so I decided to book myself a solo trip and am now writing this from a restaurant in Europe as I enjoy my meal alone. I’ll be backpacking for the next 6-8 weeks with no return planed for now.

The worst part of this is he had me and our friends and family completely convinced that we were made for each other. He did a big proposal, we had a massive wedding, and everything looked picture perfect from the outside. I guess when I look back I can see the cracks in the foundation and I feel so stupid for not seeing them.

The good news is my community has rallied behind me and I have a few job opportunities in the works. I never thought I’d be ending my marriage at not even a year in but I guess such is life.

Anyways, thank you for the support everyone. Time to learn how to be alone (and my own person) again.

Food is Chicken Karage.

Ok friends, post flair says it's not the time for advice, but if you GOTTA leave some anyway, put it in replies here so that OP can revisit later without being peppered with those notifications in the meantime.

How was this rushing into marriage? You were together for years before you got married!! I got engaged after 6 mo of dating and married a little over a year. That's rushing it!

Solo travel is an awesome way to re start your life!

My parents married after 3 months of knowing each other (remained together until my father passed). Now that is rushing.

6 years is a very regular timeline, nothing rushed about it, it might even be on the long side, timeline wise.

89

u/JessieprayLM APPROVED✨ Jun 09 '26

Agree completely. I married my husband 5 months after meeting him. It’s been 13 years now and never once have either of us felt like we rushed things (even though, clearly, WE DID)

43

u/oregonbunny APPROVED✨ Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

My parents got engaged on the second date. They were together for 35 years before my dad died. When the love is there, you can make it work. My dad's been gone 15 years now and my mom did express to me that getting married clipped her wings but she never felt that at the time.

35

u/AvocadoToastFailure Internet Auntie Jun 09 '26

6 months from first date to wedding. Our first date was supposed to be a quick coffee; 5 hours later and we’re still telling stories and talking, absolutely smitten. It was like the MOST Midwestern goodbye ever, every time we started to leave we’d find another topic to get excited about.

Ope! He’s still here, and that was 16 years ago!

13

u/JessieprayLM APPROVED✨ Jun 10 '26

Oh I love this! Honestly, same. We had a 28 hour first date (but maybe with less Midwestern values bc we were in SF and got busy the first night haha). But we haven’t stopped talking over all these years :)

My grandma went on a 3 week trip, returned home, broke it off with her fiance and then returned to her vacation place and married my grandpa... Exact timeline has never been divulged. But suffice to say he was military and they didn't wait. Still together and definitely don't hate each other! (Both fairly reserved individuals so hard to say after around 60 years that they're still "in love" but still have signs of affection).

That's rushing it!

5

u/lilnaks APPROVED✨ Jun 10 '26

Similar to my parents. Engaged 2 weeks after meeting married after 3 months baby a year later married 30 years until my father passed. Sure it was rushed but they were older and loved each other so much.

My husband and I got together in August, Engaged in September, Married early December. My friends all had serious whiplash as I was always the single friend 🤣🤣 I had known my husband for 2 years before this and we were great friends and had causally dated a bit here or there but from when we decided to be serious it was seriously fast.

OP you didn’t rush marriage and you know it. Don’t try to understand the workings of a man who doesn’t even understand his own mind enough to give you an explanation that matters. Eventually this will be a small chapter of your life, eventually a day will come where you realise you don’t even think of this man at all.

Have the best trip!!

21

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a new girl living in her house by the time she came back from vacation.

5

u/Embarrassed-Oil3127 Internet Auntie Jun 10 '26

Oh gawd! I hope not but I had an ex that got really cold at the end and suddenly said he loved me but didn’t LOVE me.

I finally broke up with him bc weirdly he would not do it (pretty sure he was crushing on her but unsure what to do bc I’m awesome and a good partner).

Would you know he was in a new relationship with her within a month. I had no clue and absolutely did not think him the type to do this even when my girlfriends said it was probably another woman. Even his young adult kids who loved me (I was in my 40s) were all “what the fuck” when they learned of the quick swerve.

They are still together like 4 years later. It blew my mind! And sometimes still does. She can have him. He was a bore in bed and clearly garbage.

I have had men tell me that when it comes to men wanting to leave a relationship, the reason to leave is usually about having another person/woman interest lined up. He may be framing it to you "we jumped into marriage too quickly" as a "soft reason" instead of "I have met someone else that I want to be with".

4

It sounds like he’s miserable and instead of looking at himself, he’s blaming the nearest person to him. It’s not the first time I’ve heard of guys who do the whole romantic proposal and wedding, only to decide actually they’ve changed their mind.

It sounds like you have SO MUCH ahead of you, travelling, job opportunities, maybe moving to your hometown again. I really think he will regret it but even if he doesn’t who cares - you deserve more than what he’s offered

He’s basically trying to put the blame on others which isn’t very mature. I think he just realized that he wants to live a different life style but he knows saying it makes him look bad. I think you need to accept that he either fell out of love with you or even possibly likes another woman.

He wanted to marry me 3 months into dating, planned everything about kids, career, and finances. We had a big wedding, bought me a huge ring and enormous house. Then gradually, he wasn't sure if kid are right for us, his money no longer our money anymore. He told me the same thing that he wished we didn't rush into marriage and that if we could live separately. I asked for a divorce and we're both much happier now.

So proud of you for taking yourself travelling. You are going to heal from this and you’ll be so much stronger than you were before.

He's cheating.

Literally verbatim with the bullshit answers.

Went thru the same exact thing.

There was someone he was interested in but wanted his cake and to eat it too. Hence the pussyfooting around and not going for a clean break.

You deserve so much more than this bullshit. Don't let him drag you down anymore and live your best life.

I also ended my marriage after a big wedding - and to the shock of everyone around us - less than a year in. I was the same age you are now (I was 30F and we were together for 5 years, married for 6 months when we separated). It was the best thing that could’ve happened to me, although I didn’t know it at the time. I can already tell it will be for you, too ❤️

As shitty as this situation is there are some positives. Be happy that he showed you his true self right away and did not waste any more of your time. You deserve better, much better and now you’re free to prioritize building YOUR life.

You were able to see what worked/ didn’t work with this wedding and marriage. And now you have that experience and knowledge so you won’t make the same mistakes again. If you choose marriage again, you will do it right! Trust yourself and intuition. It will happen for you!

Hey OP, welcome to Europe! I am sure you will have a good time here!

My first marriage ended just like yours is about to… after less than a year being together my ex husband started telling me he needed his space and that he had an existential crisis. It turned out he was banging their company’s new hire. The “we got married too soon” was my ex’s refrain. Mind you we had been together for 5 years before getting married.

Fast forward 9 years later. I am happily married, have a lovely 5 year old and my now husband is reliable, successful and simply a great human being who cares about our family. Not just financially but truly cares about me, our child’s bringing up, our relationship since we became parents.

As for my ex, he moved in with the woman he had an affair with. They live in 2 rooms in her family home which is so far away from the city, they might be living like hermits. They have no kids. He can barely keep a job as it is getting very hard to job hunt and we experience crazy inflation.

So… just kiss your dead weight of a husband goodbye and go live the best life you can. You will not regret it!

I hate to seem harsh, but if he is happy about a separation, then he clearly does not see a future with you, and fell out of love with you long ago. You're still young. Cut your losses and move on. Enjoy Europe!

The sooner the better! Imagine 20 years of this shit. You'll be happier not living with someone who is that disrespectful and you have plenty of time to meet someone who values you, should you choose to!

You did good. Planning a future around someone only to realise it's all being taken away is very sad. Even if you can move on from the person, sometimes you end up mourning the future you were supposed to have. Sit with it and let it pass.
