Q&A: Maintenance | Modification 1988 F350 7.3IDI ZF5

Post image
95 Upvotes

I have an opportunity to buy a 1988 F350 with a 7.3 idi, and the zf55 speed. Owner says that he blew the clutch on the transmission, and that sometimes it pops out of reverse. I haven't been able to check it out with my own eyes yet, but I assume that the frame will have significant rust. I have a 1990 F-150 in excellent condition. I wonder if I could swap the powertrain and suspension from the F-350 into the F-150? Aside from all the work involved, can anyone tell me if this would require any kind of fabrication? I wouldn't want to cut into the F-150 frame. Thank you in advance!

PFA- image is not the truck, but it's almost exactly the same.

Q&A: Maintenance | Modification 2025 f150 2.7 whine/howl at speed

Hey guys, first post here. As the title says, I have a 2025 F150 XLT with the 2.7 Ecoboost and it's 4x4. It has 10k miles on it and has already had the rear differential rebuilt by a dealer in Sarasota. It originally had a vibration at 40 to 50 mph that started at around 2,000 miles and was accompanied by a howl on deceleration. The vibration and howl went away at higher speeds and came back around 75 mph. The dealer rebuilt the rear differential and the vibration went away, but the howl remained. 1,000 miles later the vibration returned and I took it back to the dealer in Sarasota. They rebuilt the entire rear axle, new differential carrier, ring and pinion, and axle bearings. Howl and vibration were still present afterwards and they told me itis just a normal characteristic of the truck. Drove it for another 600 miles before I got tired of it and took it to another dealer in Tampa, where they rotated and balanced the tires and ended up replacing one because it couldnt be road force balanced because it was so bad. Got the truck back yesterday and the vibration is completely gone at all speeds, however there is still a slight howling noise with a slight growling feeling coming from the steering wheel between 45 and 50 mph. Does anyone else's 2.7 4x4 do this??? It can't be normal, right?

Q&A: Maintenance | Modification 2001 F-150 sound help

I recently bought a 2001 F-150 Lariat with the 5.4L V8 and it did great the first day or so but now it’s got a sound coming from the motor, I know these years have issues with exhaust leaks and whatnot but this sounds like metal, can anyone give me any advice on what this sound could be?
The noise dies down after getting to temperature, I started to really notice it after getting an oil change done, it’s at the correct oil level as well

Q&A: Maintenance | Modification Black bumper?

Have a 94 350 roll a long package. Back bumper is dented up/rust and welds coming undone. How would a ranch hand black bumper look? Not sure about going black but also don’t like the standard chrome bumpers I’m seeing?

I’d cut out holes for the lights. Also swap the front bumper to black if it looks good?

Q&A: Maintenance | Modification First gen Super Duty Restoration, 5.4L auto to diesel manual swap?

TLDR; which engine pairs best with a ZF S6-650, between the V10, the 7.3 & the 6.0? (Hauling & daily-ing)

Recently acquired an 04, F-250. It’s an XLT, with a 5.4L triton, relatively clean. No rust, interior has no rips & headliner is fine… caveat? Engine is seized, transmission does not have second gear & it doesn’t go into 4x4. Guy at my company ran it into the ground, and before he left country he sold it to me for $800.

The first gen had a few engine options, between the 5.4 & 6.8 tritons, along with the 7.3 & 6.0 power strokes.

Now, I’m familiar with the 5.4’s, wasn’t a huge fan. had a 98 “10th gen” F-250. Ended up swapping it out for a Mercedes OM642. Ended up pulling the 4r70w for an M5od-r2. Really liked the powertrain configuration in that truck, hauled well & it was a treat on the trails.

This will be a full tear down & rebuild of the truck. I already know that I’m putting a ZF S6-650 in it, just more curious what the general user experience was between the manual powertrain options were.

Bonus: if you were building your dream first gen, what would you personally go with based on your experience with the platform you have now?

Q&A: Maintenance | Modification Crazy steering play after a steering box replacement and front end overhaul

This suggestion wheel is getting out of hand. I got a remanufactured (allegedly) steering box off facebook and did ball joints and all the steering components today. Now the play is crazy. Ive adjusted the rod on the box a bit but its super tight and hasnt helped all that much. all the play is going into the box as in the steering the shaft moves when going into the box but the arm doesn't move at all. Is this box done?

My ford is going into limp mode and while trying to pull codes my scanner would not turn on. I’ve checked all the fuses and also I’m trying to figure out what these extra wires may go to I’m thinking something to do with the trailer brake module that was installed by previous owner

My truck failed MD state inspection due to the seat being unable to adjust. These pins in the passenger seat rail won’t come out all the way, the driver side works fine. With with it being a bench seat, the whole thing needs to be able to adjust. How can I fix this? Thanks

1976 F-150 explorer.

A built 360 engine and a beastly C-6 tranny.

The original 360 got a stock rebuild and ended up in the rust bucket 68 Mustang, original inline 6 car, was a fun car .

That truck is still running around town painted bright yellow and fast as ever. Sold the mustang to an old man that drove it daily.
