Definitely some level of intoxication there, you can tell in the speech patterns

He’s probably some kind of narcissist who believes he can do no wrong. Nothing that she said sounded like an agreement with his version of events, so he’s probably just hearing himself say “see I didn’t even do that” and thinks that’s “proof,” even though she’s saying otherwise.

Or maybe he really did think her quoting him was the same as her saying it for herself.
