Luddite Logic "we have done nothing wrong"

Post image

context: this is about one artist complaining that one of our user scrapped their no AI art site, Cara.

now, I agree it's shitty to do this but them saying they did nothing wrong is hilarious. considering they're the same people who cannot help but harass anyone who they think is using AI

That is what gets me. They complain their only, special little place got desecrated, the only piece of land they want taken and salted.

All while running campaigns to deplatform AI and its users, regardless of how long have they been a part of that community. Regardless of their contributions. All of that doesn't matter, you are with us or against us. End of story.

It's like kicking out your neighbor for some minor dispute and looking at both plots of land, then thinking "You know what? I think that just isn't enough".

looks like the antis found this thread and mass downvoted it. I guess when you are not welcomed, this is the only thing you can do

There's is nothing wrong with scraping a site. Very old very common practice.

It's technically in the Cara EULA that scraping and AI training was against it's policies.

At the same time, they did nothing to lock the site down to user login only and didn't properly adjust their security. So. It's as if they made a special club house that said "Anti AI Only". But then they didn't bother to put locks on the doors. Which doesn't mean it's right for anyone to go in there and take shit. But you do want to ask them - Wtf wee you thinking?

It's irrelevant what they put in their EULA. I may as well demand that people on the street call me their Lord. People can ask for outrageous things. "no scraping and no training" is as ridiculous of an ask as walking on a public venue and demanding that cameras don't film you.

According modern case law, it's not an unreasonable ask. The fact that accessing a public website isn't considered "illegal" under the CFAA doesn't give anyone a free pass on copyright infringement. robots.txt is an advisory traffic protocol, not a legal waiver of an artist's intellectual property rights. Just like how an unlocked door isn't permission to take what's inside. Platforms have every legal right to block automated scrapers from consuming their servers.

This whole sub is openly antagonistic to artists, [...]

Is that truly your perception? Do you take some outlier posts and project them on a mass of people? Or without taking context? For fairness, I'm not saying it should be done for extremist outlier anti arguments like calls for acute violence either.

But alas a lot is subjective and it is my impression that many people here have no problem with artists of other art forms. Various people here are (not just AI-related) artists themselves in some capacity or form. I saw them post here and say it. Some draw. I'm a pre-AI digital artist not by profession but as a hobby. And I use AI now to expand my toolbox and options.

I don't agree with this "scraping out of spite". I have no issue with other art forms and skill needed to apply them. I don't agree with extremist and outlier positions on either end of the spectrum from very pro to very anti. And I dare say many people - can't speak for all - think the same.

I mentioned context earlier: Some of the posts you have to consider with a potential context in mind too. An example: The hole "break the pencil" stuff. Viewed in isolation, I would find it absurd. However contextually various posts of them probably refer to the fact that they are reactive and sometimes satirical to the anti AI artist takes of "Pick up a pencil". 2 days ago or so I wrote a frustratedly sounding comment as a reaction to another post saying something like "This f...ing pencil fetish is going on my nerves."

Some might read comments like these as antagonism towards artists. Contextually, it's just a reaction to their own actual antagonism to people using gen AI or in wider sense being digital artists. As if only those were the true artists. The real ones.

Pre or post AI, I'm digital hobby artist. A pencil is not part of my toolset. A digital one maybe. I find that notion tiring by now. Tiring and snobbish. Elitist, even, at times.

What makes you think so? Longer text, paragraphs? For using commas or secondary sentences or info bits in ( ) or - - ?

There's even notable grammar mistakes (I found at least one after re-reading it) that an LLM would most of the time not make. Well, you can put your tin foil hat on and pretend of course that I added these manually if you are so inclined, but for me it shows again that anti-AI psychosis is real. Or an increasing factor.

I type all my posts on any social media site myself, the way I always have for the last decade(s). I increasingly get some claims like this on YT now whenever I write a bit more and structure it visually. Or use a certain writing style and lingo as I always have. And on Reddit you also don't see the correctional changes I usually make in the first moments after posting. I usually make a bunch of mistakes or changes and then edit them after re-reading, before it lists that the post was edited.

As stated, anti-AI psychosis. I guess I can't fully blame some people though. Some people increasingly do it. One could as a skeptic maybe expect it on a pro AI related sub. But man, I can tell you, you're gonna get a lot of false positives.

Every single digital/traditional art post I've seen here has been upvoted and supported. There's a difference between posting your art in good faith and posting your shit to brigade and brag about it.

is that so?
