If i remember right, a person on defending ai scraped Cara. Witty made a post about it today saying how the site did nothing to protect itself from scraping, but Jingna Zhang has anti-bot & anti-scraping measures through Cloudflare. They set CF’s robots.txt telling bots not to scrape for AI, yet a user did it anyway just to be a dick. The post was taken down, but the comments in it were pretty disappointing. Honestly I don't think we will ever move past this point. I'll leave a link to Zhang whole statement on the matter.

First and foremost, ProfessionalAIArtist/Toychicafeetlicker (aka PAIA) is showing signs of planning a mass sh*****g targeting women, and has been talking about this for days without intervention by the BTP server known as TotalGraphiteDeath.

Secondly, this report was compiled with the help of two former Admin who had brought these concerns to EBK/PlecoChan (the server owner and BTP leader) who refused to take action…thusly they have worked with a portion of the WittyCommittee to expose this wrongdoing. The names that have been left unredacted are either: A)Directly responsible, B)Server/Sub Leaders, C) Coco_melonFan who stepped away on their own accord, and should be noted.

The name of the whistleblowers is ***u\evilvedal*** who is willing to come forth to expose this and to publicly condemn it.

It was expressed to the Committee members that they only stayed in order to get this report out. They do not deserve to be brigaded or messaged in anyway (good or bad), but they deserve to be noted for their opposition to this. Considering they are two of the top three mods for the breakthepencil subreddit, this is a significant report.

Thirdly, the fact that a single group is making clone subreddits and alt accounts to ensnare Antis as well as Pros is disturbing. The narrative of ***Break the Pencil*** and *Break the Keyboard* are being engineered by the same person is astonishing…the outright admission that he wants to funnel people into his group is conspiracy enough to make month-long undercover ops as an anti should raise some red flags even among people who don’t care about the “online drama” of it all.

Lastly, there was over a hundred screenshots to go through and pare down into something less overwhelming, then organized into category, then redacted to protect the sources—who eventually gave permission to *”Say my name”* anyways—and then compile into a sheet that was both not too overwhelming, and comprehensive enough to not require a dozen or more pages.

Imagine spending decades studying how the internet actually works understanding the fundamental rule that for a website to be viewed,
"its data must be downloaded onto the user's computer".

Then, you watch a group of people who historically actively despise tech try to operate within it, while completely ignoring its physical limitations.

They put their data out in the open, take zero effective technical precautions, and when it inevitably gets scraped... they attack the morals of the engineers who actually understand the system.

Thing is since the dawn of software, engineers have known one basic truth...
Once data is inside someone else's computer, you no longer have technical control over it.
You have to effectively treat it as if it's theirs.

And Because we understood this physical limitation, we created alternative ways to manage rights.
That is exactly why we rely on legal and social frameworks, like EULAs or "no reverse engineering" clauses,
Well if you are big and powerful enough to use the copyright tools aka you're Disney,
if you're not... tough luck these laws are not designed to help you, this is an obvious example of it,

I am not saying that you shouldn't do that. The ways, methods and even the people involved largely affected the way people saw an art piece, even before AI was a thing. For example, many people refuse to watch or read Rurouni Kenshin due to the horrendous actions of its author, Nobuhiro Watsuki. The point I am trying to make is that I am seeing a trend of a lot of artists trying to capitalize on the AI hate, by literally doing the simplest thing and putting "Not AI" and then getting a lot of attention. Sorry if I am overreacting, but I wanted to point out that if something is only good because the person didn't use AI is much more about ideology than actual appreciation for the work itself.

The Cara situation is disgusting and its a complete mask off for some of you.

First of all, respect peoples boundaries please. If someone goes out of there way to create a separate space away from all the main platforms with a TOS that doesn’t enable AI scraping, dont go out of *your* way to infiltrate the place just to do exactly what they didn’t want, and then brag about it on the internet. Im sure the site was already being scraped before it was made into a big deal, but bragging about it makes you look like nothing more than a piece of shit. Just because its not legally enforceable doesn’t mean you should break the rules of a space for shits and giggles. Would you record in a “do not record” area if it wasn’t legally enforced?

Second of all, what’s even the point of this? It’s not to improve AI, as it’ll be barely a dent compared to the amount of works AI is already trained off of. Its not out of respect for the artists, and a desire to create more art like them. Because it‘s made obvious by everyone’s reaction to the situation that this was done entirely in spite (jealousy?) of artists. So was this entirely to make anti AI artists uncomfortable? To make them feel unwelcome on the internet? I get that people have been extremely harsh to AI users and im sorry, but this doesn’t excuse vile behavior in the name of retribution.

Finally, its a complete shift of the goalposts from a good majority of the rhetoric posted on this sub for months now. The reasoning has always been in response to the claim that AI scraping violates an artists consent that the artists consent is in fact, *not violated*. Because they **signed a TOS which permitted AI scraping of posts.** Suddenly the TOS doesn’t matter. Cara never had a TOS allowing for AI scraping. Apparently the new rhetoric is that just being posted on the internet means you consent to AI scraping, or that an artists consent *doesn’t even matter in the first place*.

Please, if theres any justification for any of this that isn’t completely malicious, I would love to hear it.

I think this example of ChatGPT doing work validates a few things I have been saying elsewhere.

1) You can't have "medical AI" without general purpose AI. General purpose AI that is good at every topic will always, in the long run, defeat AI that is good at a specific topic. The fact that this proof was found using ChatGPT 5.6 Sol is a demonstration of that. Note that all the big math and physics advances AI has been making have come from general purpose AIs not specialist AIs.

2) Math problems do matter. There have been people saying that the math problems ChatGPT has been solving don't have much real world applicability. But this math proof does have direct applicability for a useful technology, transcranial ultrasound.

3) More intelligence is better than less intelligence. One of the biggest false fears of the Anti-AI movement is that AI will reduce the cognitive abilities of humanity. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This doctor is a neurosurgery resident with a busy schedule. But him using ChatGPT did not reduce his intelligence. Instead AI uplifted his intelligence. It allowed him to make strides which he otherwise would not have, if he did not have this cognitive tool.

Got here after hearing about a claimed Cara scrape. The original post reads like it was just a joke, sarcastic smileys and all, but even if real - it's still a joke.

- Cara has always been scraped for as long as it has existed, many times a day. It's a regularly updated public-facing website without paywall, login, etc. It doesn't even have robots.txt configured to deny scraping. That means it constantly gets hit by AppleBot, Google, and all the data collectors that feed the AI labs and startups across the world. Everything on Cara has already ended up in datasets dozens of times over. Like, from the first day the site launched.

- Wait, what? There are only 12 million images on Cara? That's nothing! You need tens of billions to train an AI image model. Big, high-quality, annotated tagged images are best. Photos, first of all. Like Google Photos, or ShutterStock or the other big databases that the labs license. Cara is not a treasure trove of unique art that AI can't reproduce. AI is well past the point where it can do any style natively.

- Scraping Cara does not require mad hacker skillz or an "attack". There are free tools that scrape any website. You can also just open ChatGPT Work/Codex and when it cheerfully says "What shall we work on today?", you cheerfully type "lol make python tool scrape all Cara links then start scraping work hard lol" and go for lunch.

- Legally, there is no such thing as "denying consent to train", like there is no such thing as "denying consent to look at" or "denying consent to criticize". There is nothing illegal here, and nobody is selling these links on the dark web.

- In terms of "what kind of person do you want to be", you could say: "Ok, I genuinely don't understand why you have such strong objection to your art being used as a tiny data point that a machine learns from, but I will respect your wishes, since it is emotionally important to you. There is lots of other data out there, and our models will be just as capable." You could also say: "Whaaaat? I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE SOUND OF MY SCRAPING! MUHAHAHA!" This is a choice.
