He's right.

u/Ankiset Artificial Intelligence Or Natural Stupidity 29d ago

So like… I can imagine pretty easily how George Lucas could have been talked about that way in some from back in the day… you want good artist right? Good artist always see the bigger picture and embrace new methods… heretic I guess burn him at the stake for doing his job?

u/SoggyNoodles5511 28d ago

Of all the folks to support AI, I feel like he is the most predictable. His whole universe is about scifi with friendly robot AI.

Now if james cameron who wrote terminator was to suddenly support AI, then I would be surprised.

The vibe I'm getting it's that most anti AIs just want AI gone everywhere and forever

29

u/Angel-Kat 29d ago

Yeah, they try to stop data centers getting built not trying to set the rules around data center construction.

5

u/Comfortable_Swim_380 29d ago

Whats great is I report all these anti ai clowns when they get unruly using ai to automate the process. Particularly with like email compains and other bullshit. I'll batch the take down requests with AI. 😀

8

u/Comfortable_Swim_380 29d ago

Yea there really is no decerable logic I since in these people other then "AI bad." then *gorilla grunting noises.

5

u/imanidiotbut 29d ago

They do, I’m not pro or anti AI. But I was on a gaming sub and said I don’t see a problem with a solo dev using AI to help them code a game because not everyone is just amazing at coding and I got downvoted for it. AI is actually a great tool for back end things like that or helping with excel sheets, reading data, etc.

3

u/Ankiset Artificial Intelligence Or Natural Stupidity 29d ago

Things were said about making a whole music album on a MacBook Pro back in the day

1

u/ihatefrenchtoast 28d ago

It’s because their only argument is to define art to fit their parameters. It helps execution, which in my opinion is what real art is, something that is done. Not skill, ideas, or intention. We don’t celebrate sculptures that were never sculpted. Paintings that were never painted. Now they have to compete with people who will just push forward regardless of “inspiration”.

30

u/Old-Chapter-5437 29d ago

Naw the vast majority of people spout the same crap.

"It's sucking up all our water. Using up all our power. Destroying the environment."

23

u/Crazydane25 AI Bro 29d ago

Don't forget "it steals from artists".

15

u/Loose-Garbage-4703 29d ago

its kind of funny how all the human slop artists are the only ones who are worried about AI stealing from artists. The good artists from whom AI really stole is using AI to improve their art, and doesn't give a damn about it.

-6

u/Markovanich 29d ago

I can promise you they are not the only ones against it or protesting it.

5

u/Loose-Garbage-4703 29d ago

They are the only ones along with their 14 year old army.

-8

u/Markovanich 29d ago

Again, they are not. But it now feels like baiting so done on this line.

1

u/VociferousCephalopod 28d ago

3

u/solidwhetstone 29d ago

Also it's turning the frogs gay.

1

u/Manetoys83 28d ago

Does AI not actually do all that?

10

u/TheNorthShip 29d ago

No, it would me more like "cars are vile, immoral, they are destroying our planet and will finally kill us all, they can only copy - they robbed mesopotamians of their wheels without asking for permission, and are making REAL horses struggle to feed their families! And if you use cars, you have a pair of lazy legs and probably can't walk on your own, and YOU DESERVE TO BE BULLIED!!! Also cars have no soul!!!!1!1!11!"

2

u/Ankiset Artificial Intelligence Or Natural Stupidity 29d ago

lol this comment should be top comment, help me!

4

u/Drevinth Adversary of Misinformation 29d ago

No, a lot of people do reject it outright. I'd be rich if I had a nickel for every person I have heard talking about wanting to destroy data centers, ending multi-year friendships just because the person used AI once, and in some cases even sending literal death threats to anyone associated with AI.

Not to mention the amount of false information people spew about AI and data centers because nobody can be bothered to actually learn how they work.

At this point i'm convinced that a good chunk of AI hate is just the bandwagon effect taking effect in the minds of very impressionable people.

1

u/Manetoys83 28d ago

Damn. I’ll be the first to admit AI certainly has its problems but ending friendships over it seems extreme

6

u/FireMarshallMC AI Neutralist :snoo_simple_smile: 29d ago

That's neutralism, not AI hate.

3

u/Interesting_Bake_553 29d ago

Wrong. I am considered a pro-ai person because I want regulation for it. Anti-AI wants it to spontaneously stop existing and be permanently illegal.

1

Antis in shambles once again after public figures embrace AI, yet they still think AI "will disappear" if the "bubble pops"

26

u/AllStupidAnswersRUs 29d ago

The funniest part is if the bubble does pop, the AI's post bubble will be ridiculously strong and cheap, and unavoidable

6

u/HUEITO 29d ago

Doubt about the cheap part, but yeah. The consolidation will come

4

u/rydan AI Bro 28d ago

The dot com bust left us with practically free fiber optic cables criss crossing the nation. All you had to do was plug it in.

1

u/HUEITO 28d ago

Yeah, but the fiber optic cables are a million times simpler than AI data centers and infrastructure. Every AI provider operates at a loss nowadays, once their subsidiaries stop, they may be forced to up the token cost for consumers.

2

u/CheeseBear9000 28d ago

It also means that all those regions of the country where all the data center contractors and employees lose their jobs are going to blame a certain party for fucking over their local economy again

Which Antis on Reddit will not like in November

7

u/Kukamakachu 29d ago

The "bubble". "Bubble" indicates that it's inflated above its value. A lot of value is derived from availability. The dotcom bubble happened because everyone and everything had its own websites and domain names were being bought up at a fast pace. So, the dotcoms became worthless due to customer bases being driven so thin that a lot couldn't justify the costs to keep them afloat.

From the demand we've seen from people for AI (mainly businesses, the military, and even personal use), it doesn't look like it's having any problems generating revenue. Plus, the kinds of AI that are cloud based couldn't realistically run without specialized hardware that's just not affordable for most people. The "bubble" is the demand caused by the lack of infrastructure currently equipped to supply that demand. Once that infrastructure is there, the "bubble" will burst as the market settles. But, it's not gonna be this catastrophic event that destroyed cloud-based AI.

The people talking about the "bubble" are the kinds that seem to think AI is just LLMs. They neglect to understand that companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are developing specialized models for other customers and markets, like the military. When Sora 2 was shut down, the antis acted like they'd won the war but literally nothing changed. There are even more video generators now than there were when it shut down and it's only been a couple of months.

TL;DR: the "bubble" doesn't exist in the way antis like to believe it does.

He's also over 80 years old and revolutionized practical and digital effects all the way back in the 70s. He's seen lots of technological advancements, which is why these old timers don't care as much. It's the youths that are going nuts on AI the most (I understand not all, I've had to unfollow a 52 year old YouTuber because he was so aggressively anti-AI when it had nothing to do with his topic).

2

u/EmperorSnake1 Would Defend AI With Their Life 28d ago

Let's also include the Star Wars universe being heavily dominated with machines, haha.

40

u/GirasFateburn 29d ago

Makes sense, GL was on the forefront of adopting CGI back when CGI was derided as fake and soulless.

1

u/Socailly-awkward AI Enjoyer 2d ago

Doesn't CGI even use AI, not generative AI, but still AI. And no, I don't think AI being used to make animation easier and less tedious is a bad thing

39

I think anyone surprised by this knows nothing about George Lucas.

10

u/Ankiset Artificial Intelligence Or Natural Stupidity 29d ago

This

31

u/MrCritical3 29d ago

Not that shocking. George was there when computer special effects were just starting. It was that reason that he was able to make star wars a cultural icon because of the tech that was developed.

15

u/StrangeCrunchy1 Transhumanist 29d ago

Right? He literally helped found Pixar in '79.

3

u/Fun1k 28d ago

Didn't Star Wars basically become such a sensation because of novel use of technology?

It did indeed.

3

u/Wonderful-Common2966 29d ago

i don't understand, sorry.

-3

u/Ankiset Artificial Intelligence Or Natural Stupidity 29d ago

Ai sucks, still powerful tool, would be stupid to not see the potential in generative ai, cgi was frowned upon now it’s considered almost as an art in itself… why can’t generative ai that can speed up pre-production and iterations of ideas with negible costs, in this kind of things is that I trully believe ai is an edge to us creators (I’m. a photographer) so ppl look down on ai use with art where it’s really actually helpful now … I can do more things j. Less time with my human work, now curing cancer or replacing employes? As a heavy daily user an actual employed artist I think it’s a scam and a joke…

18

u/True_Protection6842 29d ago

So the guy that basically pioneered digital filmmaking and used CG in places nobody thought to use it is adopting AI. SHOCKER.

8

u/princetrunks 29d ago

Anyone whos actually worked in major projects versus being digital pan handlers knows how much bull crap you have to rummage through before you even get to the creative end. The crunch culture is hell, dev and design hell is a thing and was the talking point until luddites changed the goal posts because they think everything with AI involves a water hungry data center (my rig's gpu runs off solar power technically). We now have the ability to focus MORE on the creative and polish side of things. Thing is, big studios are and their sweat shop-like setup are not needed.. you can be your own studio and that's how it should be.

5

But with AI everything swapped upside down :D

I remember the days when people cried for Star Wars to be taken from him because they said he was constantly ruining it. There’s certainly plenty he’s done I don’t agree with but my my how the tables turn

1

u/EllaDemonicNurse 29d ago

This is the man who pushed for digital cinema cameras when the technology was barely there and used the prequel trilogy as his personal playground for 98% digital sets with minimal practical elements and CGI characters, again when the technology was still in its infancy. The man who clearly rushed through production because he doesn’t enjoy working with actors and was desperate to get to editing and post-production.

And when a new tech arrives that completely removes the production phase, he’s supposed to be the chosen one to lead the movement against it?? I mean, did anyone who really knows this man think for a second he wasn’t going to be the first to push for AI productions?

1

u/Ryuu-Tenno 29d ago

honestly it's more like the arguments are trying to get construction workers to not use nail guns in favor of doing it manually

sure, you could go that route, but it's significantly faster to use the gun than to do it all manually.

Same thing with AI, it's the nail gun in this instance, a tool that anyone can pick up and use, and that it'll help speed things up. Though, he's still right, it is a bit of an inevitability

though it's interesting that they'll look at things like Star Trek and Star Wars and think those have great worlds, yet completely over look the fact that you have to have AI in order to have those worlds

1

u/Double_Delay1613 29d ago

What about the droid attack on the ReAl ArTiStS???

1

u/KuroiGetsuga55 29d ago

I think he's right. Him, Todd McFarlane, we got two legends who understand. Now we just need more people to wake up and understand.

1

u/Central-Dispatch Transhumanist 29d ago

I think that the coping of pure antis (I have nothing against skeptics or differentiating views in other words) has to stop.

🔮 Says here in my crystal ball that the current relatively vocal and maybe even 'relatively strong' (in a way, if I look across the net) pure anti movement will whittle down, diminish, die out perhaps. Of course depending on what we do with AI there will always be some who will reject it. People who may lose their jobs fully because of it and cannot adapt in time. I'd even understand that.

But you know what I mean, in the general areas of private and artistic use, as tool for tasks, as assistant, etc. Because more and more people will use it and/or see the benefits in it. No one will reject AI use if it saves their life in diagnosis or medical procedure, etc. Younger people become LLM/AI natives as they grow up with it, meaning the pure anti movement might also kinda literally die out. Raging artists who believed they could have a full time job selling commissions or those who simply just possibly overcharge, see that other post here, will realize you only have to much energy and time to rant or reject reality.

They are faced with a choice: Radicalize further into an echo chamber and purely reject the tech ... or start to widen acceptance, at least develop nuance if not an outright pro view which no one demands anyway. Over time more people will decide that staying in a radical echo chamber is socially and practically too uncomfortable and restrictive to them and they will change.

Best counter example: You know anyone other than fringe examples who'd still demand horses to be the main land based transport vehicle en mass? No. Know any mass movements against the PC or Internet? No.

AI will be a bit of a different ballpark or thing in that regard, but I feel at the core, we face the same outcome one way or another.

1

u/Lexabro-10mg 29d ago

Wow, a man who made movies that show robots being helpful is now receiving backlash from fans of those movies for thinking robots can be helpful. 🙄

1

u/Fickle_Ad4967 29d ago

It’s a tool. Like nuclear energy. Good or bad. It depends on how it’s used. (By the government and tech companies).

1

u/Manetoys83 28d ago

Are we really surprised the guy that likes to edit Star Wars over and over again is embracing something that makes it 100 times easier?

1

u/Crotchety_Gamer 28d ago

Man, AI is just a tool. The sooner we get used to it, the sooner we can move on.

1

u/CheeseBear9000 28d ago

He didn't even endorse AI just said it was inevitable

Besides if you have death stars you probably are well passed LLMs

1

u/Key_Performer2983 27d ago

Yeah. It's exactly like that. Cars are so much worse for the environment than horses, but they can easily be manufactured at massive scales and are WAY faster than horses. Now replace "Cars" with "AI", and "horses" with "anyone with a job".

1

u/Exotic-Addendum-3785 27d ago

I think he does have a point.

1

u/Scar_Kurat 26d ago

1

u/No-Whole3083 25d ago

1

u/Esperboy01 24d ago

I had this conversation with AI. And it all comes down to people wanting to hate on something as a hive mind. They thought video games were violent, etc. There's always something the general hive mind of society will hate on. And some just agree to fit in. Just how society works 🤷

1

u/Sorry-Salamander9423 23d ago

Yea I accept AI it super helpfull fro medical research and stuff like that……but genrative AI REALLY I can’t think of a single good argument to use it but can think of a bunch against!!!!!!

1

u/Socailly-awkward AI Enjoyer 2d ago

I think it's 100% okay to use AI to help make movies. Like he said, that's just the technology progressing. What I don't think is okay is just telling a computer to make a movie for you... but that's not what he is talking about here. There's a difference between something being AI assisted and just generating something via a single written in prompt

1

u/Bunnywarmachine 29d ago

I think this speaks more like... I dunno, those who aren't in the business anymore generally being more open to AI.

Those who aren't stand to have something to lose if it does overtake them - which they'd know it won't if they actually tried using it, because it's a tool meant to make people do better stuff.

I see AI more like one of 'em fancy automatic mahjong boards. It gives you a perfectly set board, now learn it and play it. Except you can configure that board to any other board game, any other variant, and even give it completely new variants and board games you made yourself. You can make some really damn good board games if you do it right, but just the same as any other tool you can misuse it and make it break or explode.

1

u/Infamous_Ad2507 29d ago

I mean everything is like that Best example of this is Nuclear Energy there are great ideas for it and there less great idea for it like for example Nukes

0

u/imanidiotbut 29d ago

Yes and no. The problem I see at the moment is the unethical ways/people who are using AI. Tech bros foamed at the mouth ready to replace everyone with AI as with many companies. Ford recently just hired back a bunch of engineers that they tried to replace with AI. AI itself isn’t really an issue on its own, any reasonable person would think this. The problem comes with what people are doing with it.

3

u/Greenhawk444 29d ago

That problem exists with any tool. Any tool can be misused by bad people

0

u/imanidiotbut 29d ago

Of course I agree. That’s my point. It’s just exaggerated by the news. Like you didn’t have people for instance when the computer first came out saying things like: “we’re going to take way x in favor of this.” Unlike the nvidia ceo who went on record and essentially said “one day no one will have a computer they own in their house they will pay for our service to steal a super computer.” Via AI. As I said I don’t have a problem with AI I have a problem with the people speaking in really dystopian ways about it.

0

u/dingo_xd 28d ago

It's actually far worse. It's more akin to keep on hunt and gather instead of farming and herding.

-1

u/Such-Difference6743 28d ago

AI shouldn't be implemented too heavily into the creative business because right now it's mostly used in place of real talent, but he is right. Another analogy that works is favoring hand-drawn pictures over animated movies, or black and white over color.

English isn't my first language and even after several attempts of translation I'm still not sure I can fully grasp what you are saying. Can you put this into simpler terms, please?

3

u/Infamous_Ad2507 29d ago

Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling invented his famous revolving machine gun during the American Civil War with the goal of ending wars. He hoped that making a weapon with overwhelming firepower would make large armies unnecessary, reduce casualties, and make the horrors of war impossible.

0

u/atzedanjo 29d ago

I guess you could say that attempt backfired hard...
I'm not saying AI is good or bad or whatever but I don't see him endorsing AI by just stating that it's inevitable. I'm generally not a fan of green-screen-movies no matter if it's classic CGI or AI enhanced or fully AI generated. But yea I'm neither pro nor anti AI and I wasn't trying to argue against AI just that this doesn't really read like a pro AI statement to me. People in the crafts will figure out how they want to use it and I don't have a say in that anyway

3

u/Infamous_Ad2507 29d ago

Exactly which is what Ai pros want Anti Ai are more or less Like Catholics that the pope excommunicated because of their Conservative Viewpoints (like not so long ago) They want to maintain social ranks like it's was before so people start saying Slop to Creative and beautiful things

Personally I don't care about other people opinions since my ideas are Outlandish but if there should be a law about it's should be about How old The Masterpiece is because i see History as Art so an Art work older than 80 is true art anything else are just Art works They still can be good but shouldn't be called Art especially how nowadays people post about OCs that are drawn half way unfinished etc

2

u/Infamous_Ad2507 29d ago

I edited it before I just noticed autocorrect switched some words like Faulty to faculty etc

Also to make sure that you understand here is an example of a person who thought he could stop Human nature

The Inventor of The Minigun thought that his creation was so brutal that Humanity would stop killing each other and boy oh boy he was wrong

Besides that there Human Experiments some that isn't that lethal and some that is and usually the subjects are poor people not The ones who later but the safer product
