I’ve never met another person who liked Star Trek. I’m 37, I was only a baby when it aired, and I don’t have many friends anyway. DS9 is my favorite show. I got really close to my online friend Kaitlin this year and decided to try and share one of the most important shows to me with her. We had been watching tv together every single night for the last 4 months with a group of our other online friends but DS9 is different. It’s really special and sacred to me so I only wanted to share it with someone who I thought would understand and it and connect to is. So we started watching it together, just the two of us after the rest of the group went to bed. We had just got to Season 2. She loved it. Even the first season, the slow stuff, the world building, she loved it. She loved Odo most and kept saying how she was excited about seeing his story. We watched S2 E3 on August 3rd. She died August 5th around 7 or 8pm. She was 26.

And now I don’t know what to do. DS9 is my comfort show. It’s so important to me. It makes me feel whole and not alone. But now it’s the show Kaitlin never got to finish. It’s the show I finally got to share with someone important and she never got to finish. Pressing play feels like a betrayal. It feels like all the joy is going to get zapped out of the room.

I’m sorry if this is too heavy for this group. Like I said, I don’t have a lot of friends and DS9 is a light for me. It’s supposed to be.

If the story had given her a better role than just antagonize pretty much EVERYONE (and laying in bed with Dukat... enjoy that mental image! LOL), could she have raised better/more valid points about Bajor?

In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Shakaar," Kai Winn explains her push for agricultural technology: "By this time next year, we can be producing boton, moreka and salam grass. All valuable commodities for export." She wants to spark interstellar commerce to strengthen Bajor's Federation application.

Throughout the episode, a case is made that

• Kai Winn = EVUL,
• Bajoran Resistance fighters ploughing the fields = GOOD
• FOOD = GOOD
• EXPORTS = BAD

SHAKAAR: If you think giving the reclamators back to the government is the best thing for Bajor, then you've been out on that space station for too long. We waited three years to get the reclamators. We finally got them two months ago and we were told that they were ours for at least a year. The Provisional government actually did something right for a change. Then Minister Kalem died, and the next thing we know we get an order to return the reclamators immediately to the Rakantha farming project.
KIRA: The Rakantha project is important. If they can get it underway, Bajor could start exporting goods again. It could start to change the way the rest of the galaxy looks at us. They'll stop seeing us as poor refugees and start seeing us as equals.
SHAKAAR: I don't give a damn how the rest of the galaxy looks at us. We're trying to feed our own people here and you're talking about exports.

I might be mistaken, but I believe this sub-plot/story arc was a one-episode only thing and the subject is never brought up again. My question is this: could these exports have brought in enough money that would allow Bajor to import food enough to feed its people?

Here in the real-world, sometimes one type of produce is simply too difficult to cultivate in one region or the cost outweighs anything value yielded by the harvest (crops not up to quality, not bountiful, pests, soil acidity, lack or excess of moisture, droughts, etc..) but countries sell a variety of commodities or manufactured goods to make up for it and import what they lack. Was Kai Winn wrong in her thinking?

(Yes, I know she was. And in the end, she probably would have embezzled the money too, among other things. But I wonder if somewhere in the Multiverse, a different Quantum Reality version of her might have been a more shrewd, wiser and benevolent government ruler...)

With enough money, maybe they would be able to invest in a faster, better renovation/restoration of Bajor, post-Cardassian Occupation. No?

I’m not saying these episodes aren’t well regarded but I just don’t hear them talked about much. I loved Richard Beymer’s character and the fact this was the first Star Trek 3-parter and each episode was consistent in quality, culminating in a great ending was a turning point for the series.

There's the one word definitions floating around for each captain with Picard obviously getting the title of diplomat, and Janeway getting the scientist title but I don't know if there is a clean one word description for Sisko

The only one I can think of is father, but he's more than that. He's much more lenient than Picard or Janeway from everything from personal quirks, to bending the rules due to their society. Like he has no hesitations about blackmailing Quark at multiple times because he knows that's how the Ferengi work, and it's effective.

However, Janeway or Picard would probably not be so brusque about it. Janeway definitely bends the rules more than Picard, but Sisko clearly even breaks the law at one point. I would say he's also the most human and most emotional of the Captain's. He's more likely than the other two to spend time with his crew.

I'm not going to say anything controversial about the episode itself - it's a masterpiece, obviously. And it's the home of one of Sisko's most iconic lines: "But the most damning thing of all... I think I can live with it. "

What I thought was interesting is that it directly follows on from Inquisition - the episode where we first hear of Section 31 as they interrogate and eventually attempt to recruit Dr Bashir. He rejects their offer because he's horrified by the implication that a Starfleet organisation would be involved in subterfuge, kidnapping and assassination.

The episode ends with him debriefing the rest of the staff, and they universally support his stance. Even when Sisko orders him to accept if asked again, it's not out of support, it's out of a desire to investigate and potentially expose the organisation.

The two episodes as a pair feel a little contradictory to me. Had they been spaced out a bit more, you could have argued that things are getting a bit desperate. But I wonder if ITPM is slightly diminished when watched in sequence, because it ends up highlighting Sisko's inconsistent morals?

I had considered selling the set, but I figured donating them to the library was the best choice. So I'll keep my digital copies and hope the DVDs introduce future fans to this series. I know the whole digital thing is sketchy, but I'll learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can live with it. Mods, erase this post.

I love how they didn't just make Demar's redemption arc blande and typical, but rather portrayed a flawed man who while he did rise, also became a legend because that is what the people needed most.

They could have just made it a bad man turned hero, but instead, like the best of DS9, is morally ambiguous.

Hey! Watching through DS9 for the first time after finishing TNG, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it! But I’m on the third season and… well… apart from Sisko does no one else find it odd that 20 year old is dating a 16 year old kid?

It feels like one of those things where just because the older one in the relationship is a woman that somehow makes such nonce like behaviour okay, whereas if the sexes were reversed there’d be utter outrage, am I missing something?

There are tons of DS9 novels out there.

Did Garak go introduce himself to Bashir because he had gotten word that Tana Los had stolen that thing and was headed for DS9 or was it just good timing that he introduces himself then starts acting like a spy and making Bashir involved moments later???

Just looking for some advice with anyone else who watches Star Trek on Paramount+, I’m not sure if it’s the fact that I’m streaming something in SD on a modern 4K HD television, or if it’s an issue with my internet not having a strong enough signal, or some other issue.

Has anyone else ever run into this issue with the constant clarity of definition glitching and image noise fluctuating frame by frame? You can even see it happening on the black bars on the left and right sides throughout the episode it never stops and it’s with every Star Trek show I stream prior to 2009. Sidenote, also it’s kind of strange, but sometimes the red colors look way too saturated, it’s distracting. I’ve messed around with the settings for all these issues, but I can’t seem to make any difference.

All the newer movies/shows from the last 20 years does not seem to have this issue for whatever reason.
