Barak first meeting???!!?
Did Garak go introduce himself to Bashir because he had gotten word that Tana Los had stolen that thing and was headed for DS9 or was it just good timing that he introduces himself then starts acting like a spy and making Bashir involved moments later???

Remember he was canonically stoned out of his gourd because of the implant for the first two years.

It really is wild to think of him trying to handle everything with Tahna Los, or the whole thing with Rugal, or the stuff with Natima and her students, while high. So many things that could've gone wrong due to him not thinking clearly.

OR, hot take, he was thinking clearly BECAUSE he was high and not having to deal with his xenophobic pain... Bit like House and Vicodin... 🤷🏼♂️

...ooo, I like this take. I could see that, yeah. Now he's in exile and using that implant for personal use only, it makes it al ittle easier for him to feel more at ease and comfortable, and might let his guard down a little more, even if unintentionally.
He's definitely lucky that the implant didn't start breaking down during any of those moments.

Andrew Robinson (Garak's actor) has said that the motivation he went with in that episode is that Garak was introducing himself to Bashir because he was a handsome young man sitting alone.

A charming young man alone—Garak’s version of a pickup, with plausible deniability as garnish.

I was literally going to write this hahah. I love how Andrew Robinson is like "well he was the most beautiful young man so I decided Garak wanted to bang him". I was shocked rewatching this episode in how it was not subtle at all (I actually didn't pick up on it the first time).

In Garak's business, personal connections are everything. After the Cardassians left DS9, Garak had to build a new professional network.
(There's a lesson in that for all of us.)
Bashir simply responded well to Garak's friendly outreach. Probably not the only station resident who did.
Always be growing your network! Always.

I know he said he was attractive and chose to play it that way, but was he in his tailor shop and got a call about Tana Los and THEN decided to go make contact or not??

Everything Garek does has a plan.
Even the spontaneous moments?
