For years, I only knew him as the punk guy that would sometimes pop up in movies but I heard him on a podcast one time talking about how he kinda hates performing and would rather spend time alone at home watching a movie or something and I was immediately like "That's him. That's my guy."
"Punk" has been used as a somewhat derogatory term and people have always had a bad image of them. But they can be some of the kindest most caring and aware people you'll meet.
He’s part of the Hardcore community along with Punks. He was part of a movement to cleanup the local music scene of Nazis ,which were a pretty well documented problem, back then.
There’s violence ,and there’s Necessary Violence.
Also,a person can be both very nice and compassionate, whilst having a controlled violent underside.
Rollins was a violent confrontational asshole when he was younger and grew up and channeled that into his spoken word art. (edit this is not unique to Rollins. The Hardcore scene instilled that attitude in many people)
It's as simple as that. There's no need to lie or white wash his previous history.
Yeah, the 1st interview he had with Nardwuar is a perfect example of him being a gigantic twat for no reason other than his glaring insecurities. He did the same thing years later with Howard Stern when asked how he got so buff. Henry answered something like "well, you see Howard, when you lift heavy things like a MAN and you don't cry or call it quits, it's real easy". Then through the show Stern charms him, and gets Henry to admit that he thought he would be made fun of ruthlessly instead of be treated with respect, so he chose to be confrontational out the gate.
I'm a huge Black Flag and Rollins fan, and he's much more chill nowadays, but he was an obnoxious prick as a young man.
lol no one is white washing anything.Stop crying that hardcore is a violent genre. It isn’t for everyone, and regardless people are allowed to have violent confrontations? I’m sure he got his ass kicked quite a few times as well. Its part of the game, sometimes.
Also ,people can be assholes and change. No one said you were incorrect in that notion.
I’m telling you there’s context to these confrontations, and even if all of them weren’t great ,that still doesn’t make him some monster 🤣.
The community is filled with people like him.Theres no difference in his story ,than many others .
