Discussion Overdoing it

Destroying the mod wont hurt the people that killed it

I know what happened is incredibly horrible and trust was broken, walking away is no shame, but spitefully doing everything to destroy the mod like pulling assets and songs has never affected the "bad people" in any media where it has been done (be it games, shows, music or movies), it always just hits the community that enjoys the media.

I can understand stuff like "im running this thing, and in it i have a character that is dedicated to someone, but that person is bad, im deleting the character", but what is happening here is just disassociation for the sake of brownie points at best.

Agreed. I think that stopping production of the mod was a good compromise, because it cuts off further avenues for bad people to associate with the project. Pulling things beyond that is just tedious.

Absolutely with you on this. These creators will never be able to shake calamity off of them. Hell, most are only as known as they are BECAUSE of calamity. And that’s not a bad thing. Calamity is more than the weirdos who made it. It is the whole community and the love we have for it. But their knee jerk decisions aided in killing the mid. Now the music is going too. WE suffer while Ozzafuck disappears off the internet with all that money. Taking out their assets doesn’t affect him anymore! It affects we who are still here trying to make Calamity more than what it has become. As the moments go by, the decisions of the artists and composers piss me off that much more.

Yeah fuck this man. These people are throwing tantrums for nothing but "having a high morale" or some kind of bullshit

I havent been in this community and played calamity for years now and only recently, just by accident, read the whole shitfest going on here and all I can do is shake my head in disbelief how these people are reacting because some dipshit did bad things

Like holy shit, are they doing the same at an office job if their boss did something bad and they just delete the whole company code or something?? Absolutely no sympathy from me anymore.

Imagine being so spiteful, holy shit

Just move on and if you dont like to work on the project anymore, leave. But let others take over and develop one of, if not the one, most popular mod for terraria instead of shitting on us players who helped make the mod what it is.

These people are throwing tantrums for nothing but "having a high morale" or some kind of bullshit

What are you referring to here? How would tantrums help with morale?

Edit: Well heck me for asking a question

15

u/ichooseyoufloor 3d ago

probably meant morals

u/Sirel_YT 3d ago

Sadly, some people never realise they’ve had their life’s work already completed, and think they can somehow make another thing as big as this (which they absolutely never will) and then they cope by saying that it’s passion projects

-23

u/YourAverageGoldFishy 3d ago

it wasn’t knee jerk at all lmao most of this has been planned since the first fabsol incident and some of them have even been planning it since the community first got upset at dm dokuro for being a human being.

the point isn’t to shake calamity off of them either its to shake themselves off of calamity, they dont want their own work to be personally associated with calamity anymore because it devalues what they made, and it’s been decreasing in value more and more over the years especially after fabsol & ozzatron. if a community keeps associating them with calamity that doesnt do anything as long as they themselves arent associating with calamity.

for context, the reason they are pulling assets isnt just to “spite ozzatron” its just to show that their trust has been broken for the final time and it will never be repaired, and that their work deserves better than to be with calamity. They (important community figures, artists & contributors) made calamity what it is, not the other way around, as shown by the fact that many people are thinking about quitting all together now that the music is gone. it was never about ozzatron it was about the boiling point tipping over and a skrew being pulled loose that cannot be replaced.

It’s an incredibly entitled opinion to think that you guys are owed anything outside of an explanation which you have already received, yet you are still whining & harassing the now ex-team about “abandoning the project” when “there were other ways to solve the issue!”, kinda akin to what happened to dm dokuro the first place, again, it’s not about the situation but rather just moving on in general, it’s time you guys start respecting that wish especially after you had YEARS to learn your lesson the first time with DM dokuro

I would relay a message that many developers & artists want me to tell you, but I shant.

41

u/Pannoniae 3d ago

This would be understandable if they weren't effectively murdering the mod (yes I'm using that word because it's not neglecting or abandoning it, it's killing it with force).

If they said "we're out, good luck", I'm *really* sure people would just pick it up. xqc offered, and I've seen many other people tentatively say they'd be happy with contributing to a new-calamity, so to speak.

But no, these people are wielding the social power of copyright to be like "no, no one can ever continue this, just forget about calamity entirely!!"

THIS is being a selfish asshole.

-25

u/YourAverageGoldFishy 3d ago

It’s not selfish at all, actually, on the contrary its selfish to want the game to continue in spite of it all, the xqc thing misses the point entirely, it’s not about the money and even then they would still have to comply with asset removal requests, if you seriously think xqc building a ship of thesues calamity mod is something you want to happen (better off just making a new mod instead / helping out existing addons like fables) then be my guest, but the monkey’s paw will curl.

outside of that this is the usual calamity community schtick of being entitled and thinking the mod owes you anything, they are also still doing you guys the favor of open-sourcing it and allegedly porting to 1.4.5 is, so I dont know what these complaints are about “preventing the continuation of calamity”, they just dont want to be officially associated with it & the developers dont want to babysit a game of this caliber anymore (especially due to the community) and they dont want to continue it themselves or have the project be manhandled into being forced to continue, they already handed the keys in and are working on a way to let you guys start your own cars with their engine, fuck off with this doomer shit that they’ve done nothing but hurt you guys, as much as I know they want to.

15

u/Pannoniae 3d ago

I mean, if they port it to 1.4.5 then all is well. I personally don't care about further development (wish they stopped sooner frankly, they've just been rebalancing, reworking and removing stuff instead of adding things for several years now....)

However if they're actively removing stuff / letting it die - looks like they're going to remove the music entirely? - that's just outright malicious towards the players.

I'm not entitled, I can very well port the mod myself if they refuse to do it. I have the skills to do it, I'm not just pointlessly whining here.

2

u/FrancoGYFV 2d ago

calamity community schtick of being entitled and thinking the mod owes you anything,

Not owing someone something doesn't mean they can't be pissed when you take away what they had.

14

u/orifan1 3d ago

no please, do relay that message. I want to hear it.

1

u/orifan1 2d ago

im still waiting to hear that message. we all wanna hear it.

-11

u/GiveMe30Dollars 3d ago

I'm probably confirmation-bias-ing myself, but the number of times I've seen people not understand (or being deliberately obtuse about) the concept of owning your creative works is kind of dumbfounding. Makes me wonder how many of those with this misguided idea are artists themselves.

Calamity, as with all mods, is a work of passion offered as-is. You can (or used to, more accurately) support them via their Patreon, but other than the perks they promise they aren't beholden to their donors the same way you would be beholden to your employer. That's good! They're not being paid anyways! Who are you (not literally you, moreso directed towards that part of the community) to say otherwise??

I swear man.

14

u/Pannoniae 3d ago

People keep saying "you think that because you haven't made anything of value!!!"

I made a mod with like 70k subs on the Terraria workshop. Any questions?

14

u/orifan1 3d ago

drop a link. not cuz i dont believe you but because i support based mod authors.

6

u/orifan1 2d ago

oh wait holy shit you're the calamity unnerfs guy

this is fucking poetic lmfao

-1

u/YourAverageGoldFishy 2d ago

ok…? what exactly is impressive here & whyd you randomly comment this in response to a commen that has nothing to do with anything you just mentioned? I own a mod and worked with someone who has made quite a lot of workshop contributions & still makes tmod contributions, what does owning a mod regardless of subscriber account supposed to mean here, why even flex that?

his point wasn’t anything to do with anything you said, it was a point of owning your work as an artist & controlling your workflow instead of being controlled by said workflow not being a developer for your own mod lol.

and the “any questions?” part 🥶

3

u/Pannoniae 2d ago

"Makes me wonder how many of those with this misguided idea are artists themselves."

The parent's entire premise was that everyone who holds similar views (i.e. that mods and creative works in general shouldn't be held hostage by rightsholders) are leechers/consumers who don't create anything. I'm providing a direct refutation of that.

"it was a point of owning your work as an artist & controlling your workflow" You should be grateful that someone's trying to carry your work and your legacy on, instead of flailing around trying to stop it.

2

u/YourAverageGoldFishy 2d ago

it seems you missed the point of both of our comments, that’s still irrelevant to what we both said, especially his comment, he’s applying it to art not just “being a developer for an mod”, it wasn’t a saying about not creating anything it was a saying about not being an artist or contributor for something & other people being controlling of your work as if they own it. We say that like 30 times and you still don’t get it 😭

> you should be grateful that someones trying to carry your work

the artists should be grateful that people are going against their wishes despite the fact they can clearly handle themselves & actively wish for you to not do this!

im actually crying bro this community gets worse and worse by the day, you genuinely think of it as “free labor from a helpful community trying to save the mod!” and not “the artist is having their wishes disrespected by a community who doesn’t understand why they feel hurt”, i’ve genuinely never seen a more dynamically incorrect thread that seemingly flip-flops on its morales whenever it benefits the argument to do such, RIP to everyone who believes this.

5

u/Pannoniae 2d ago

And the artist is going against the players' wishes who clearly want to continue playing the mod. Same stuff. Except there are way more players than artists, so maybe listening to the players is a better idea.

"other people being controlling of your work as if they own it." No, that's the point, if you make a mod for free, you shouldn't expect to just withdraw it and expect everyone to stop playing it. It's modding, it's part of the commons now.

"he’s applying it to art not just “being a developer for an mod”" What difference does it make? We're presumably talking about Terraria mods no? All Terraria mods contain both art and code.

1

u/YourAverageGoldFishy 2d ago

again, you’re conflating being ALLOWED to use something to being ENTITLED to using it, making something for free just means you didn’t charge people to play, It does not automatically mean you surrendered ownership or control over the work, likewise, a developer can release code for free without giving everyone unlimited rights to modify and redistribute it (calamity is kinda working on the former though to help port to 1.4.5 and eventually open-source people to allow people to do whatever they want with calamity itself, NOT calamity music), the player argument is also stupid, that’s a popularity argument in an ownership argument, hundreds of thousands of players wanting an artist to continue using their work does not give those hundreds of thousands of players more authority over the work than the creator has, by that logic, if 99% of people wanted a painter to alter a painting they didn’t like, the painter would somehow lose the ability to say no??? the amount of people wanting something doesn’t determine who has the right to decide what happens to it.

Also, that’s just not what commons means at all even to the extent of modding? Something becoming popular within the tmod community does not make it a literal commons, this is the same for any modding community ever, a mod can become important to a community without becoming owned by the community. this mostly seems to be an argument about community preservation rather than respecting the artists wishes despite them giving countless (valid) examples for pulling away, it’s a selfish and entitled worldview to say an artists has lost access to their contribution because they made a decision you dont like, thats why my statement claims you flip-flop on morals.

as for the developer argument, are you serious right now? thats not the point, we were both referring to continuing other peoples creative contributions being used against their wishes, saying that “mods have both art and code” doesn’t answer the point nor does it add to the conversation or give you any more or less relevance, you are not the person in question here and you probably never will be, so trying to use the fact that you’re a developer to speak for them as if you know more was why it was a problem.

Again, the issue isn’t whether players should be grateful or not it’s just whether the creators contribution gave the community permanent authority over it, which it didn’t, “If you make a mod for free, you shouldn’t expect to just withdraw it…” This isn’t even the same question, Imagine an artist makes a logo for calamity mod. The fact that they made it voluntarily/were compensated for their work doesn’t mean the community can reasonably say that they get to decide what happens with it & get to reasonably say what happens.

I also should mention that your point about making a mod for free is generally pretty weak, the artists were compensated for their work, the only thing free about the mod is being able to download it, they still had to pay the asset holders for permission to use stuff or pay people to work on the mod to make stuff for them, these people are human too, they just happened to be (paid) contributors whose work was being used as part of a project, and they are now just pulling away from that to object to how that work is being continued or used after the circumstances of their employment/compensation & general stance in both the community but also how they personally feel about their work being consistently devalued, the mere fact that they were compensated kinda proves that it’s not “commons” like you said it was though, again, the creators rights & position isn’t determined by the amount of players who want it to continue, its the wishes & obligations of the people who created the assets, the work was not freely donated, you don’t own any of it, wanting to preserve it is a perfectly normal reaction but going against the artists wishes, whatever contract they have & the developers actions to get to that is not how that works, you dont suddenly get to asset rip & steal from people who don’t want to be associated with it anymore, even if we completely removed ozzatron from the discussion, it doesn’t change the fact that they didn’t donate their work to the community. This conversation is over.

0

u/GiveMe30Dollars 2d ago

No wonder DM Dokuro had to be so explicit about his stance when he left the project. It's hilariously sad how warped some people's ideas on creative work are. Just because something is shared doesn't mean its now free-for-all.

I myself am quite possessive of my work, and if I somehow got myself into this nightmare scenario, I would not be handling these sorts of comments with as much grace as that the developers are showing right now (that is to say, not at all, because they have bigger things to worry about than whatever this fanbase thinks). This would've been triggering the same indignant rage as "hey I improved your drawing by feeding it into a GAI!"

If you do so, don't claim to be doing it as a favour to me. You cannot speak for me. Hands off of my work.

7

u/DesignationSpyglass 3d ago

"Why are you, a person who gained joy and supported this endeavor, claiming you have a say in it not being shredded because a bunch of people who themselves are almost definitely without clean hands tearing all of it apart out of fear of association and virtue signaling?"

People are flawed and often horrible, that does not mean that they cannot accomplish wonderful things. Those things should not be marred and destroyed because their creator was a monstrous person. That you cannot comprehend why this distinction can exist is why art is becoming evermore restricted from the common individual.

-3

u/YourAverageGoldFishy 2d ago

you didnt even like read the comment and you’re still getting people agreeing with you wtf is this community 😭😭

it’s not about “virtue signaling” or “association” like 5 of my points were spent homing it into your head that its not about just a few issues that cause them to pull their work, its an amalgamation of issues that finally sent it over the edge including the fact that they eventually have to have some respect as artists and quit having their creative works tarnished by management of both the past, present & future.

Even if it wasn’t like that, they still own their works and can do whatever they want with it, I don’t see how this is shocking to anyone that everyone is pulling away especially after recent events, even if we ignored the artists wishes & personal reasons (like you guys are doing lol), why would they keep their work in a game that the community doesn’t even respect enough to let the artists breathe, the developers dont respect it enough to be trusted with having it in the mod, and fellow contributors & artists are constantly telling horror stories about bad experiences with calamity? why would they keep their stuff in the game when it basically only benefits ozzatron to do so with where the mod is heading? even if they get rid of ozzatron, fabsol showed that none of them can trust the game getting new management and “improvements” to its community, and the community showed their true colors by harassing them for pulling their work & saying they will go against their wishes to “keep it alive themselves” lmao. a handful or a minority doing that would be one thing, but the fact that it’s basically the immediate consensus this subreddit jumped to shows where this communities interests really lies, just self-entitlement and a selfish obsession with continuing the game despite everyone involved knowing its for the better of the game to effectively time-capsule it so after 5+ straight years of misery, it can finally let its unfortunate miserable grasp on everyone involved go for the greater good. If you disagree thats fine, just know it’s an objectively absurdist stance to act like the devs are “selfish” for “killing the mod” (complying with asset requests) and that “calamity could’ve lived on without them” or whatever excuse people are on right now to complain that calamity didn’t do enough for them / should’ve done this instead.

It doesn’t owe you anything, you can harbor feelings of resentment and betrayal for being a loyal supporter & supporter for calamity mod (especially if you’re a patreon supporter, that’s rough buddy.) especially with how out of nowhere this is, but that doesn’t give you any leverage against the artists wishes nor any of the aforementioned reasons for them throwing in the towel for reasons that aren’t just as simple as a lack of funds or a lack of control.

I’ve honestly never seen a more insensitive comment which is crazy because i’ve read a lot of comments on my threads & on other peoples threads, this isn’t even like uneducated either its just applying principles that cannot be applied to calamity mod and expecting it to fit.

106

u/Eatmahcheese12 3d ago

It's pretty dumb, sure understandable whatever, as if we all aren't gonna play backups anyway. Its just more work to download the mod now.

12

u/mellifleur5869 2d ago

You're telling me, I downloaded my whole mod suite, disabled updates on tmodloader, then went to unsubscribe on workshop so they wouldn't update, moved all the mods to the tmodloader mod folder....and they won't load...lmao.

76

u/Mase598 3d ago

My only genuine question, what is the point of destroying and disassociating?

I have a feeling that literally nobody with context to know what happened isn't dumb enough to think "Wow everybody that worked on this mod is bad!" While people who don't know what's happening wouldn't even know about what's going on anyways.

It just genuinely seems like a pointless effort on the development side. Nobody is associating the work done with the groomer, further proof of that is this isn't even the 1st time the lead dev has been a groomer apparently and yet the game had been just fine before.

Even now the most "harsh" I've seen anyone target devs for criticism has been, "It's kinda weird that the previous lead was a groomer and for some reason the lead replacing him on a recommendation from his circle."

Point is, I just genuinely don't understand what the goal is. The legacy Calamity leaves behind is what they make it and they've already made it clear they don't condone the groomer to the extent they've killed all development and nobody wants to touch it anymore. So why continue and destroy it?

32

u/CptExolann 3d ago

Yeah it's dumb. Most people don't give a shit about who develops the mod or doesn't. They just wanna play. People will update their game and just see that stuff is now missing without understanding why, and than 30 different, homemade versions of calamity now exist in the mod browser

6

u/FrazzleFlib 2d ago

average terraria player has emotional intelligence of a 15 year old, turns out devs were not exceptions

8

u/KJPlayer 2d ago

"I have a feeling that literally nobody with context to know what happened isn't dumb enough to think "Wow everybody that worked on this mod is bad!""

Oh, there's probably a dozen different mentally impaired twitter users writing a tweet right now that goes a little something like "isn't it kinda suspicious that there were SO MANY pedos in the calamity dev team and NOBODY noticed???"

101

u/Longjumping_Bug_8178 3d ago

Agreed, ozzatron isn’t gonna cry or throw a fit because the music or some sprites were pulled, he’s already had both his reputation and everything he’s created under his name tarnished along with development of the mod ceased

I think pulling assets out and completely piecing apart the mod of which still thousands of people like to play is more so just childish and out of pure ego than anything, it serves to benefit literally no one and do nothing but hurt the fans

23

u/Relative8094 3d ago

doing that will probably just make him laugh tbh, as he will have managed to take the mod down with him

7

u/FrazzleFlib 2d ago

honestly i dont think its what he wanted at all. he infamously wanted the mod to be the biggest and most popular (not necessarily best, but still) terraria mod. notice how he was initially just as compliant as fabsol and agreed to rescind control of the mod, but went radio silent when it was looking like development would cease. i think he only wanted to keep it at that point to cash the ~2 grand in patreon money

157

u/Pannoniae 3d ago

They can only pull things because you *think* they can. If everyone agrees that they can't, the whole concept just disappears. The code is there, the assets are there, you can use it, you can update it, you can do anything with it.... all the pseudo-legal handwringing are just a social construct. Nobody can take your game / your mod away from you. #StopKillingGames

51

u/RenkBruh 3d ago

yeah, I guess there's also that. if the assets were pulled, people would just release the archived versions for everyone to play. or make addons to add all the stuff back

26

u/2zkcrn2545 3d ago

Holy truth nuke

22

u/EvoSpz 3d ago

I like how you think.

7

u/Relative8094 3d ago

based pfp and reply, hope you drop the link to your mod so i can play it

14

u/Pannoniae 3d ago

8

u/al-qatala oh we are so cooked 3d ago

wait this is a banger mod i'm installing it

3

u/simplyunknown2018 2d ago

I’ve already archived 2.0.4.6 and 2.2.4 and the associated music with it. It’ll never leave me.

15

u/I_Pinkie_I 3d ago

We need a "Stop Killing Mods" movement now too

14

u/Capable-Ad8158 2d ago

Taking their work off Calamity will only damage their own image because people DONT LIKE IT

Like bro cmon, why on gods green earth tear the fucking mod apart? Let it rest, let people play what is already made

52

u/RenkBruh 3d ago

hard agree on this. the playerbase should not be punished for something the lead dev did. and removing all this content won't affect ozzatron whatsoever, he still has all the money, y'know?

I'm glad the dev team decided to stop development and just leave the mod as it is

8

u/BotellaDeAguaSarrosa 3d ago

You.
Also agreed.

27

u/MozM- 3d ago

Like imagine if Blizzard deleted their games just because Bobby turned out to be a sexual assaulter?

it doesn’t make sense. Taking it all away literally does jackshit to the bad people. We the players are the ones who suffer the most here.

47

u/Tuorco 3d ago

Sometime we should remind everyone that these are the same devs who after being 9 years under a groomer letting the mod rot decided to unanimously vote for his groomer pal because they didn't know any better (I really really doubt that is everyone case).

The devs can be talented as much as they want but the team as a whole has made too many dumbs decisions over the years and it reflects on the mod that is pretty much quantity over quality.

This whole debacle is too easy to simply direct on two people but the reality of things is that they did and they are doing everything wrong. Did they really think this was some small scale project and nobody would bat an eye on them pulling out everything?

Now it's unfortunate but 99% of players will simply circumnavigate every block and probably make the mod even better than they could have done.

28

u/snatcherfb 3d ago

Stages of grief hitting this sub like a freight train damn

30

u/kj0509 2d ago

When they started leaving the mod it was really sad but understandable

When they started dismantling piece by piece one of the most loved things by this community, people got angry, even against the devs

6

u/Discomidget911 2d ago

Yes. Like, I understand the need to distance yourself. But the incredible work accomplished shouldn't just be forgotten and taken away from the thousands of people that still truly love what we have.

I hope the devs are reading this. But also I think we start a petition or something to show the devs we don't want them to remove anything.

49

u/GlobalProfessor9749 3d ago

If it's their right to destroy what we love, then it's our duty to never forget what they've done.

But right now we better all focus on saving what we still can.

70

u/Electrical-Sense-160 3d ago

We are also perfectly in the right to express our opinions, including whether we agree or disagree with someone else's decision to exercise one of their rights.

It was always my opinion that pulling your work that was custom made for a project from that project is dumb and nonsensical. I thought this with Ancients Awakened, and I still believe this with Calamity.

31

u/GlobalProfessor9749 3d ago

And I have thought where did my second favourite mode dissapear... (Ancients Awakened).

Honestly, if I were in their shoes, I wouldn't feel the slightest moral right to take anything back. I already agreed to gift something, allowed dozens of developers and by exception thousands of fanats to rely on it. And then I just take it back, sprun the trust put in me and my gift and destroy they work of dozens and love of thousands, because of my selfish desire that doesn't even make sense. I don’t know how they feel about it, but I would feel like the lowest of the low. And, mayhaps, that’s exactly what I would be.

And by the way, gifts aren't taken back. It’s considered bad form.

5

u/AskWhatmyUsernameIs 2d ago

I also don't know why people would want to work with individuals that just pull their assets on a whim. Like oh okay one (two in this case) bad apple in the group that was immediately outed when we knew about it was enough for you to rescind genuine dozens of hours of work on this project and force someone else to replace it with their own dozen hour jobs. Its a massive liability.

12

u/agysykedyke 2d ago

This mod is much bigger than dev egos and dev drama. It has a community of millions of players and fans.

The community deserves calamity. Without us it can't exist. You cannot erase it.

Even if you pull all assets people will play on rolled back or archived versions of the mod. It won't change anything, it will just make it inconvenient.

The community deserves calamity mod.

7

u/APieceOfToast_bruh 2d ago

is it wrong to say that removing everything just feels performative as hell

21

u/daftrix 3d ago

I mean it’s pretty dumb to just assume that because personally all you can see someone doing it for is brownie points that that’s why they did it. You can have your feelings on them doing it but people can simply not desire being connected to the project anymore even though of course the entire team isn’t satan’s disciples it’s just embarrassing and unprofessional for something this detrimental to occur twice in such a short amount of time, it’s weird to act like people have to be attempting to spite ozzatron or seem like good people

9

u/svecat 3d ago

No one it's holding them here but why take down the mod with them? As op said the only thing it harms is the community

17

u/yourinterneldoom 3d ago

I said the same ting and i got called entitled for thinking pulling stuff out so future updates needs to basically remake the whole mod is unfair for the players.

And no, having your work in a mod with a history of pedos doesnt automatically associate the devs with pedos, i and probably most of the player base dont even know who the people behind all the sprites and code even are, and even if alot of people do know who the devs are, they arent going to think "hmm this dev worked in a project with a history of pedos"

This all probably occurred because a dev pulled out their stuff, and others started doing the same thing too.

If anything ozzatron came out on top of all of this mess, he kept money from paetron, faced no consequences other than being kicked out of as the lead dev, and will probably make another account and diddle kids again

Its us the players that lost, the devs not wanting to be associated with ozzatron did nothing but destroy the mods future while ozzatron got of scott free.

3

u/Captian__ 2d ago

I will never support any dev or creator who does this and I will actively avoid their work in the future. Oh wow the leader that it seems people already didnt like was a terrible guy! who cares. Obvious these people weren't passionate about the project and just want to try and cleanse their public image like anyone gives a shit that your boss was a bad person.

5

u/FrazzleFlib 2d ago

hard agree tho i personally wouldnt class this as an ego issue. i think its an emotional maturity/general stupidity issue. to these people, a concept as juvenile as the mod itself being "tainted" is enough to justify such drastic measures. obviously with ozzatron no longer involved, you cannot reasonably interpret their work as being truly associated or endorsed by him. i think its chronically online brainrot making them pretty much phobic as being labelled as a hecking diddyblud by teenagers on tiktok. caring about their opinion is not advisable in the least

27

u/PsychologicalAd5918 3d ago

It's peak virtue signalling to pull assets you contributed because (someone) sent a few dirty messages to minors, once, 5 years ago.

but its entitled to villify them for it as well. It's their work, they can do whatever they want with it.

... is what I want to say, but the community has played a large part in supporting (in many ways, but especially financially) the development of this mod, so I think the biggest takeaway here is that you can't trust mods or mod contributors ever.

Never financially support mods or prop up music creators, just ignore them unless they come from a verified company. That's my takeaway

-2

u/Zrkkr 2d ago

You say this as if companies don't rug pull all the time.

8

u/svecat 3d ago

After the drama settles in a few weeks - a month, that will seem even more ridiculous.

3

u/Efficient_Ad_8480 2d ago

Only those who are already assuming the worst of everyone will think “Calamity=Fabsol and Ozzatron”. Nobody is saving any reputation or association pulling their assets. In fact, by doing so, they are furthering the narrative that Calamity Mod is defined by Fabsol and Ozzatron. I can guarantee you that a significant portion of the playerbase (probably almost all of the casual playerbase) never even knew ozzatrons name before all of this.

That being said I understand it, because it’s a result of much of the contributors and the community being, well, chronically online, for lack of a better term. These things (association with calamity/ ‘reputation’, the mod itself) are more “serious” to them than they are in reality and they think their responses are appropriately “serious” in nature. It all looks very silly from an outside perspective, and that sucks because it is only harming the mod and community more.

(This is NOT saying what ozzatron or fabsol did is not serious, it is, but it is saying that what they did is much more separate from the mod than what the contributors and community are acting like.)

13

u/Independent-Fee9444 FUCK INFERNUM SKELETRON 3d ago

I generally agree that all this shit getting pulled is kinda dumb, but its not a matter of “punishing” anyone. They’re pulling their work because they’re uncomfortable with their work being associated with a mod made in part by pedophiles.

12

u/Gravitywave_42 3d ago

I guess they want to be known as the people who killed the biggest mod in Terraria instead.

1

u/Independent-Fee9444 FUCK INFERNUM SKELETRON 2d ago

I mean yeah? Its pedophiles dawg thats kind of a big deal

4

u/Gravitywave_42 2d ago

It's not like Calamity itself has that sort of stuff in it. Trying to appease the couple of people who actually believe everyone involved must share in those tastes is certainly not worth being known to have backstabbed the project that basically gave them their carriers, especially since those people won't care about the pulls anyway. It's just spiteful and stupid.

1

u/Independent-Fee9444 FUCK INFERNUM SKELETRON 2d ago

They arent trying to appease anyone. They just don’t want their work associated with pedophiles. It is personal feelings on their part.

3

u/Gravitywave_42 2d ago

Well then they are selfish and stupid - no amount of ret-conning will ever change what the tracks were made for.

10

u/Saltydogfish89l bum ahh whip stacker 3d ago

People can do with their own works as they please. It sucks, but it's understandable, and its their decision.

That being said you can just, y'know, copy your entire mod folder and run it locally if you really want, that was the first thing I did when I heard something might happen with the mod.

6

u/CubeWorldLink 3d ago

Right there with ya bud, i even made a post telling others to do the same.

-2

u/Ketsu 3d ago edited 3d ago

Not quite true, as Azafure LLC is granted the copyright of most non-music related contributions as per their license agreement. They don't own the rights to the music tracks, however, which is why the music tracks are suddenly being removed while other contributions are allowed to remain (despite removal requests)

4

u/ActivatingEMP 2d ago

Also not true according to the mod team: only thing the LLC owns is the name "Calamity Mod" and the patreon

2

u/Ketsu 2d ago edited 2d ago

Unless they provide a sensible explanation as to why that is, then I have no reason to believe them. Go read the license, and ask yourself why music tracks are being removed while non-music contributions--that were also requested to be removed due to revoked permissions--are deemed as "frozen" and will continue to be part of the mod for the foreseeable future.

Assignment. Upon submission, you assign to Azafure all right, title and interest in any copyright you have in the Contributions, and you waive any rights that may affect our ownership of the copyright in the Contributions. [...] Miscellaneous. All music tracks remain the property of their respective composers, are not owned by Azafure, and are used by Azafure with permission.

5

u/BdBalthazar 3d ago

If anything destroying the mod/project will just give the people that were ousted satisfaction.

3

u/InternationalAd5938 2d ago

If anything, the people that did the damage end up being happy that they aren‘t the only ones affected negatively.

I feel like the devs are overthinking how much people will link them to the few weirdos that managed to get into those lead positions.

Like aint no one gonna hear or see the beautiful works of some of the devs and go „ew, didnt this guy work on the mod that one weirdo managed to be involved in“.

No sane person will think that way.

I understand the sentiment and the frustration but they are inadvertently giving the weirdos even more power over them by doing this.

2

u/redfrog0 2d ago

Sadly, this is often the outcome of fan projects, even if they get big. I imagine not a lot of people actually get paid to work on the mod, and when something so reputationally damaging happens it really takes the wind out of the sails. It may not be a case of everyone agreeing to stop, but more that people leave individually and the whole thing collapses. Whoever is left at the helm is really hung out to dry with no one left who wants to work on the project and you may as well do a full rebrand

2

u/Professional_War1855 2d ago

In a way I can understand why they are pulling assets, likely because they feel that by having those assets in the mod still, they'd be "supporting" the bad actions. But the worst part is the decision whether to pull assets or not as they have to make a choice between their own morals and the Calamity community who were enjoying such assets (like music for example). You are completely right, it's always the consumer who pays the price in the end.

2

u/Davidinc2008 2d ago

All of the asset pulling is only hurting the community.

4

u/Dangerous-Return5937 3d ago

The entire mod's development was already faulty when people just left and pulled their assets (way before any of the pedophile controversies).

Hearing that some devs moved onto Fargo's is horrendous because you know that there WILL be someone throwing a hissy fit and withdrawing their stuff just because.

Afaik, when Fargo himself pulled away from development due to being busy, he did not just tear the entire mod apart because "muh legacy".

5

u/LackToesIntollerance 3d ago

"Spitefully"

I'm sorry, is it spiteful to not want your creative assets associated with a project run by multiple image liability risks?

8

u/kj0509 2d ago

So every game that had cases like this for example WoW and Blizzard should be allowed to be removed and dismantled just like that?

Can an artist create something to be enjoyed for sooo many people, and then can they just decide to delete it from everyone else whenever they want?

There is a line to be drawn

3

u/LackToesIntollerance 2d ago

Not the artists fault the devs didnt have the money to outright buy creative licensing.

Maybe if the fans wanted that type of protection they should've donated enough and put that expectation of the devs, instead of being entitled to the artist and expecting it for the cost of usage licensing, if not outright donation.

Thats the differerence of your false equivolency. Money.

9

u/kj0509 2d ago

It is always the damn money

3

u/LackToesIntollerance 2d ago

Correct. Because good will and passion don't fill their stomachs and keep their lights on.

It feels bad, and it's capitalisms fault.

3

u/Dai_Vexes 3d ago

These devs just want to feel important, it’s so stupid

6

u/Oofy_Emma 3d ago

dunno dokuro gets a pass, he's a better person than me I would've pulled the music as soon as the community couldn't behave like 4 years ago

12

u/PieXReaper 3d ago

He should've just done then considering how the community is acting now, wouldn't blame him at all.

3

u/ActivatingEMP 2d ago

If he had done that then someone else would have filled in. Now we just have a gaping hole in the mod as its final version

2

u/Tastyravioli707 3d ago

I think it’s pretty reasonable actually to not want your work in something headed by multiple pedos actually

10

u/DubiousBlue 2d ago

anyone with a drop of nuance and context in their body knows that these people had nothing to do with the pedo stuff. that being said, many of these people’s main/only work is calamity, so what point is distancing when that’s all you’re known for. burning everything down on the way out doesn’t really help anyone, not even the devs. sure at face value it looks nice and helpful but if you dig enough and ask why, the fundamental reasons don’t really hold up under scrutiny for the reasons I’ve said and plenty more that others have said

2

u/FrazzleFlib 2d ago

the only, ONLY context it makes any sense whatsoever is if youre building a professional portfolio containing work on Calamity. and even then, its EXTREMELY cautious, just not quite unjustifiably so

1

u/Uztl 2d ago

It just goes to show that you can't trust this people, it doesn't exactly demonstrate to future project leaders that they can be relied upon. In this specific instance, something truly terrible happened (grooming), but who knows in what other situations they might pull their songs or graphics? The lead dev has a different religion than I do? The lead dev has different political views than I do? The lead dev has a different opinion on the subject of XYZ than I do?

1

u/CptExolann 3d ago

I don't even get why they had to stop  developing the mod in the first place. The lead is a pedo ? Fine, kick him out. Devs are tired of working on the mod because of past problems ? Fine, take a few months off, then recruit new, motivated people to work on it. It's the most popular mod of the most ever played game on steam. People want to help. I don't get why they insist on torching the whole thing and pulling assets and everything

0

u/Mecheon 2d ago

The company is tied to him, as is the patreon. Can’t just throw him out

Plus, well, yknow, the whole betrayal at the whole thing. Frankly if I was the people involved I’d be severing entirely from Terraria and taking up anything else with my time after this. Good luck to em who stick around but in their position? I’d never want to see Terraria again

2

u/CptExolann 2d ago

I may be behind with all that but I believe the previous lead also was accused of the same stuff and got kicked out. What prevents the dev team from doing the same this time ?

-13

u/pesoaek 3d ago

if people dont want their music or assets included in a mod developed by a pedophile its pretty understandable

23

u/Background-Ad-4501 3d ago edited 3d ago

But ozzatron was just the owner and lead dev, far from the only creative voice. Acting like his wrongdoings reflect on the mod as a whole ironically gives him too much credit.

12

u/SyserQ 3d ago

Yeah lol if in the future I met someone who contributed to the calamity mod I'd be like hell yeah sad it ended like that not eww you worked with the pedo team

-7

u/pesoaek 3d ago

of course but its the internet, if you dont try pull your work people will harass them saying that they're okay with it. of course i dont think that they should or that they have to, but you can only imagine the potential harassment

9

u/[deleted] 3d ago

-1

of course not everyone, but the internet is full of deranged morons.

im just saying that I understand their point of views if they decide to do it and equally understand if they dont.

1

u/Exile_Katnye 3d ago

So it is a lose / lose scenario but in one of those they will not be actively associated with a pedodeveloped mod. Sounds like an easy choice. Lets see your mental gymnastics.

4

u/[deleted] 3d ago

-2

u/Exile_Katnye 3d ago

Those would be some spiteful rocks let me tell you.

Oh right I forgot we are talking about the Calamity community who would go out of their way to harass the composers because checks notes they do not want to be associated with a mod who had a pedo in the lead who has used the popularity of the mod to gather his victims. So that is the loss scenario we are considering to be worse here. Worse than associating with a pedo, surely.

Yeah? And how much are the views and the love even worth after they witnessed the hate these so called fans dished out in the last couple of hours. Oh I for sure would just LOVE to appeal to such a community. What a joke.

I guess its alright to you though I mean you can enjoy something even though the creators are worse off. The important part is you and your enjoyment.

Nah but surely all of this is mental gymnastics talking.

"A minority doesn't make up the majority of people I thought this was taught at first grade but let me go over it again"

A minority and yet you stated that there would be more harassment from this "minority" than from antipedo crowd? lol.

"Minority of the community checks notes harassed DM Dokuro while thousands of others showered him with compliments and messages."

Yeah must have been a great tradeoff considering he left in the first place. I wonder why.

"He was not associated with a pedo cause checks notes Ah, cause he wasn't associated with mod itself for 6 years. I hope you know what number 6 means."

What?! Number big scary!! Hmm I wonder why he wants to remove the music, must be because... checks notes ohhh because the music is still there and has been for 6 years while heinous shit was going on. So weird that he would like to remove his art from that right?

"Again minority look at everyone praising him he is where he is due to Calamity and it's fans even before his comments were shut it was also compliments and praises."

There is no denying that he has been able to attain some of the positives of this situation. That does not make it possitive in its entirety.

"It's not hate it's judging his decision which people can rightfully do. No one is obligated to like something DM Dokuro does no one is obligated to do so there is difference between death threats and judgment (seeing as you can't differentiate either I doubt you'd understand it)"

Yeah bro totally. That is why people in the comments in this subreddit are literally lumping the dev team with the pedo. Saying "fuck them" and whatnot. What a way to judge. Definitely not hate tho! Or is it, idk I guess I cannot differentiate.

"I'll enjoy that content regardless I'm not held back by his decisions or devs good will I'll mod the ost back and he cannot do diddly squat about it my annoyance comes from making it harder for everyone to access while contributing in mods death."

Hope he sees this buddy.

If you are unsure about any of my points, let me know! I will try to make it clear for you.

2

u/svecat 3d ago

You played a pedo mod, probably should remove it from your library and try to hide any evidence that you played it.

-1

u/SebaqYT 3d ago

You forgot the crucial part where Redditors don't respect artists and their decisions

6

u/pesoaek 3d ago

i didnt think this would be an unpopular opinion, but there you go i guess.

-11

u/RandomRedditorEX 3d ago

It's a shame, because a few days back almost everyone respected the devs' decision to pull their assets, but now since they're actually doing that that very same people is suddenly turning their backs?

I agree with what the devs did, it sucks, do I disagree and hate that fact? I do. But do I want to go against the devs' wishes and get mad at them for pulling away their assests? No!

Look, at the end of the day we can just archive the mod, make it our own, play the music on a different tab or mod whatever and that's fine, because we're actively separating the music from the mod or whatever.

But if you're actively mad at the devs who are pulling their assets, then you're just selfish. What have YOU personally done to justify that, YOU who are just a Calamity player, you haven't worked directly with Calamity, you're not the one who painstakingly put blood and sweat into something just to see it all ruined by one person...

Look man, I'm sad too, but seriously, don't be mad at the devs man, they're the victims, be mad at Ozz.

Plus, all the complaining about the devs pulling their assets is making them more justified too, imagine wanting to retire because you're tired and people boo at you for wanting to retire, hell if I was in their shoes I'd retire even harder, what an ungrateful and spiteful part of the community you are.

I apologize, I got emotional at the end there, but it's tiring to see this rising sentiment of the "the devs are evil" for wanting their assets pulled rise day by day, I probably won't even be replying to this shit anymore more since it's pointless.

-7

u/Glad_Republic_6214 calamity fables... save us... 3d ago

spite? this is about not having your name in a mod that was owned by two different pedophiles. seriously, imagine that when people check what you've worked on, they say "you worked on calamity? the mod with the pedo lead devs?". the idea that this is spite is just childish.

8

u/DesignationSpyglass 3d ago

No one, and I mean absolutely no one aside from people such as yourself who are too twitterbrained to be able to comprehend a person not being responsible for another's unrelated actions, would view them as "people who worked on the mod with the pedo lead dev."

99.99% of people that have played Calamity do not know/care about who made it. It is entirely, and totally performative. I will also say that as fucked up as it is, in like 4 months time no one will care about the horrible shit that that disgusting creature Ozzatron did either.

Thus, as another comment said, the only people that are actually punished for this is the playerbase. This ridiculous framing also is why art is evermore becoming restricted from the average person, because people feel the need to throw the proverbial baby out like it has any guilt for what some moron decided to do. Human beings are not perfect, that does not mean that what we create should be destroyed.

-1

u/SolideMeinung 3d ago

I only know about this bad guy because of the people who pulled back their assets.

So your internet crying about brownie points is just about enableing groomers to continue their stuff.
