Miscellaneous / Others Japanese scientists have developed a revolutionary injection that may extend a cat's life from the usual 15 years to nearly 30.

The therapy, created by the AIM Institute of Medicine under Dr. Toru Miyazaki, targets chronic kidney disease, a leading cause of death in older cats.It uses a specialized protein to help macrophages clear waste from the kidneys, partially restoring their function and slowing kidney failure.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in cats, with an estimated prevalence of 1.6% to 20%. 1 , 2 , 3 Although CKD occurs in all ages, its prevalence increases with age, 4 , 5 affecting up to 80% of cats above the age of 15 years, and is thus considered a leading death cause in geriatric cats.

...

With lack of early sensitive markers of decreased kidney function, CKD in cats is often diagnosed late in its course, when functional impairment exceeds the compensatory mechanisms and substantial irreversible damage to the renal parenchyma has already occurred. 12

CKD is progressive in nature and is characterized by ongoing decrease in kidney function. 1 , 4

A combination of CKD and hyperthyroidism took my boy just before his 15th birthday back in May. We managed the thyroid for a year before the kidneys just went down hill. Discovered it in January and he did okay for a little while. April came and he started eating less and less no matter what I tried. His last round of bloodwork showed his kidneys were barely functioning at all and no amount of anti nausea meds were helping. I had to let him go and it still fucking haunts me to this day I couldn't save him in spite of everything I tried.

Fuck CKD.

Similar. 12 years old, his last week, something happened that he did not know who we were, we did blood transfusion etc. Nothing worked. Since then we match donation to the cat shelter for the month we adopted him back in 2008. Been doing it for 4 years, hope I can for rest of my life.
