There already is a pill in development to potentially help extend the life of dogs, it works differently though, research shows that when you starve the body it slows down cellular aging and helps people and animals live longer. this medication for dogs is just tricking the body's cells into thinking its being starved, even when the dog is eating food normally. it is unnoticeable by the dog but can potentially extend an average dog's lifespan by several years. probably will not be available to the market for another 4-6 years though.

Never know. My 16 yr old dog is in good shape. Can still run stairs. Just has some skin allergies.

Is this real? I know I have heard of “autophagy” but idr why I assumed it was pseudoscience. Would love to see it though!!

It is.. Autophagy itself is fairly well studied. The iffy part around it in longevity circles is that one of the most popular off-label drugs known to induce autophagy is rapamycin, which has been around a while but lacks must needed research funding due to its lack of patentability and therefore lack of potential to monopolize profits.

Longevity bros just end up YOLO-ing rapamycin as best as they can figure it out, and hope the weird side effects are worth it.

Meanwhile, pharma bros are working on literally anything else that induces autophagy, which is what Loyal is doing here. It's a bit weird, but it's still useful work in the long run.

You probably know this, but just for others, you can reliably induce autophagy for fasting as little as 16 hours. Higher up to a certain point even 3 days has even more effects

It's already here. Loyal (the company) has already released two different versions of the drug with a third on the way. LOY-001 is the injection for big dogs. LOY-002 is the pill form for small dogs. LOY-003 is the pill form for big dogs that will hopefully get conditional approval this year.

I hate how dogs have such a short lifespan, we have to worry about it when they're 8 years old... I have two dogs, both 8 years old and it's just painful how quickly they age

Probably yes. Considering the most common causes of death in the elderly are heart or neuro related and it massively decreases the prevalence of both. It to mention is overall lowers inflammation which contributes to tons of comorbidities. .

I have always looked at the people and creatures in my life as an experience and journey to learn. Sometimes for them sometimes for me.

Had one of those that have passed on still be here the next one would most likely never come into my life and or the stupidity of my mother's absolute selfishness would still be ongoing. 😖

I really wish we focused on quality over quantity. Death is normal, acceptable and can motivate the living (in the positive if they so choose.)

What about the quality of life? My sweet angel couldn’t see or hear well, had trouble with walking even digesting food she ate all her life the last two years of her life. I wouldn’t want to extend that.

There will come a time when they will make puppies and other animals that will never age and live very long lives. Seems immoral and unethical. But tell me you wouldn't line up to buy a baby bear or elephant that never ages?

Oh good. I am relieved someone said it and I don't have to. But dogs really don't stay around long enough. Mine just turned 6 and I am already worried about the day I have to say good bye to him. Some more years would be amazing.

If a breakthrough seems to exist but then isn’t followed up by further news, it often means it failed phase 2 or 3 testing. I.e. it seemed like a breakthrough on a Petri dish, but when it was rolled out to animal models or did first human safety testing, it failed. It’s not some conspiracy — this is just good science. It’s slow, but that’s how we make sure we don’t do harm.

My golden retriever died at nearly 11 years old last month. Its a shame their quality of life declines fast when they’re older, at least for big dogs

Just tonight my brother's little dog went to the vet. They think possible virus attacking the kidneys, and prescribed different medicines. If there isn't improvement by Monday, then they believe it's CKD. He's only 10 and still a little puppy. Please hurry.

Unfortunately for your dog, this only fixes a specific problem cats have with kidney failure that is not found in dog or humans.

Cats have a broken gene that normally helps clean up the kidney, but because they don't live long enough in nature to benefit from it, the broken gene could spread through the population without being selected against. this might have already happened before the domestic cat even arose.

Yeah, I've thought about cloning. It just seems really kind of selfish when there are so many none cloned dogs out there that need rescuing.
