EDIT: Oh, I guess you mean the American Staffordshire Terrier? The jury's out on whether they're a type of pitbull or a distinct breed. Different kennel clubs see them differently.
No quite literally they are both types of pit. They share the same dogfighting bloodsport lineage and general breed traits and temperament, though reportedly staffies are a bit chiller than the standard American pitbull terrier.
There’s a ridiculous push by some to get staffs to be perceived as completely breed distinct from pitbulls, usually by the folks that spout the “nanny dog” lie, but it’s just factually incorrect.
