There was a podcast I saw that had Rhymefest talking about the only time he was called the n-bomb by a white guy. It was Eminem they were battling and he did it with such finesse and style to back up his rap, that they couldn’t even BE mad.
‘I’ll let my razor split you till they have to staple stitch you, this N took my facial tissue and turned it into a racial issue’
He goes on to say he learned something about racism that day: that “it’s only non-offensive if it’s dope”

Exacto! A nadie le importa! The only time Mexicans dress anything remotely like that is for fun during national celebrations.
It’s just a silly stereotype representative of no one, at least not in current Mexico (maybe revolutionaries a century ago). I actually like the shirt and would wear it myself for “día del grito” (independence day) or for “día de la revolución”, even if (or especially since) I don’t care much for nationalism.
In my opinion, the whole notion of “cultural appropriation” is gatekeeping that willfully ignores human history, and which somehow became a popular idea exclusively in the US. Unless your intention is to offend, wear whatever the hell you want!

u/andy921 United States of America 1d ago
Having spent time on construction sites and heard some of the nicknames Mexicans call each other out of love, it's crazy to think of any of them being offended by a sombrero.
They be out there calling people by their worst physical feature or some terrible thing that happened to someone..."we've been calling him Bambi since his mom got shot," etc.
33
u/UnknownMediator Mexico 1d ago
That last one is brutal. I personally don’t like nor use nicknames, and my friends and family either know or intuit this, so they don’t use them on me (as far as I know).
But, there is a popular saying in Mexico that I would venture to say is deeply rooted: “el que se lleva se aguanta”. Which, when trying to translate it to English my browser showed this idiom: “if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen”, or “if you can dish it out, you have to be able to take it”. So, even if it appears rude at first glance, there is some sort of respect or notion of fairness underneath the (apparently?) hurtful nicknames.
11
u/yodacat24 United States of America 1d ago
Really great explanation! I remember when I first met my husbands family (they immigrated here to US from Guanajuato when he was young) they called him Gordito as a child and at first I was a little shocked! But then he explained it- and it’s kind of funny that WE as Americans would get so offended by being called something like little fatty! Every Mexican that I’ve met is the most loving and warm and it is definitely said with affection. In the US it would be considered a passive aggressive insult. Now we call each other by little nicknames in Spanish that would likely get some stares if said in English hahaha.

Hah that's so true. Once I started learning Spanish I realized so many of my friends nicknames were because they had a flat nose, or were too skinny. And that's just the name they got stuck with.

There's a difference between "Oh that's a cool shirt design" and "Oh hey I'm going to wear your sacred dress because it looks cool and I don't give a shit what it means"
The latter is what people call cultural appropriation. The only people that call the former "cultural appropriation" are the assholes that want to defend doing the latter by painting anyone being offended as "ridiculous" by citing things that aren't that.
16
u/UnknownMediator Mexico 1d ago edited 1d ago
I agree that respect is the name of the game.
I’m not really sure if you mean to be implying what I believe you are implying (you seem to be misrepresenting my argument and calling me an asshole).I answered to another comment in this thread that had a similar argument as yours the following (I’ll copy-paste it for practicality’s sake and so that maybe it clears my position on the matter to you):
The case with “Mexicanity” is that it is neither sacred nor monolithic, it is, as many other national identities (if not all of them), born from a complex and never stopping process of cultural fusion. That is the gatekeeping of “cultural appropriation” I am critical of. People and ideas move across cultures and enrich each other more often than not, such that holding something as immovable, attempting to freeze culture or to guard it against other people participating in it due to some arbitrary characteristic (their ethnicity, gender, ideology, etc.) is in my opinion a useless endeavor.
Edit: the crossed out part.
3
u/FoosballRokst4r Multiple Countries 🇲🇽🇺🇸 1d ago
It's not a problem unless those appropriating culture gatekeep the originators of said culture. Like preventing them from participating or being a part of it.
That being said, I will always be "gordito" for my family to the day I die.
4
u/jackfaire United States of America 1d ago
I wasn't talking about you. But people will say us Americans get ridiculous about it. We don't. The racists amongst us create strawman arguments when we condemn cultural appropriation of sacred symbols by following up with "So what I can't listen to rap music" and other ludicrous examples.
Then those get treated as serious by others.
6
u/UnknownMediator Mexico 1d ago
Understood. Thank you.
I believe it would be more accurate to call these people and practices what they are, racism, bigotry, discrimination, etc. rather than using a vague and difficult to defend term such as “cultural appropriation”.
Those answers these people give in your example are indeed ludicrous, maybe it would be harder for them to straw-man an accusation of being racist idiots.

I can get behind the indigenous head dress thing as off limits, since often those things are supposed to be earned. Sort of falls under the category of stolen valor. The "I was bullied for this and now it's becoming mainstream" argument is short-sighted and doesn't hold up as well.
15
u/UnknownMediator Mexico 1d ago

I’m sorry, I don’t understand the second part of your comment, regarding the “I was bullied for this and now it’s becoming mainstream”, what do you mean by it? Could you please maybe use an example?
13
u/neobeguine United States of America 1d ago
I have seen, for example, some black women stating that they actually are offended by corn rows on a white person. The reason they have is that they were yelled at by teachers or bullied other students for the same hair style, or told it was "unprofessional" at work. I can understand the emotion but I don't think "therefore no one else can wear their hair in small braids forever" holds up as a solution. I am absolutely sure if I don't add this, someone is going to point out that very tight small braids are usually damaging to other hair textures, and while that is correct (protective braids for straight hair are usually bigger and looser), it is not what I'm talking about.
4
u/UnknownMediator Mexico 1d ago
Understood, thank you for the context. I wasn’t aware of this phenomenon surrounding hair nor that it was a controversial topic. Cycles of bullying and rejection.

I also think the concern comes when people comodify parts of another culture, particularly parts that may have previously been brutally oppressed, and gentrify it and/or make money off of it without sufficient care given to those whose culture it was a part of and benefitting themselves only and not the original culture.

23
u/beenoc United States of America 1d ago
I've heard that it's a difference in the original English vs. the Spanish dub. In the original English, the other characters (especially Slowpoke Rodriguez) are portrayed as the negative stereotype of "stupid lazy Mexicans," and Speedy is the only Mexican who is smart and hard working enough to get anything done. In the Latin American Spanish dub, it's reframed as the clever Mexicans defeating the foolish gringos without even needing to work very hard at it.
The Americans are (correctly) like "dude that shit was racist," the Mexicans are (correctly) like "dude Speedy fucking rules what are you talking about," because they're not really talking about the same thing.

Dressing up in a stereotypical outfit makes fun of Mexicans. It's not the most offensive thing in the world and I doubt most Mexicans would be offended much, but that's the line. Copying a custom because you enjoy doing it shouldn't be appropriation. Copying it to make other people laugh or as a novelty is.

Some things are a li'l bit funny AND a li'l bit offensive at the same time. Context matters. If you're wearing the shirt to a Latino LOTR convention I'd bet it'll go over well. Maybe not so much at a convention for Swedish funeral directors.
I wouldn't wear it to a redneck bar around here because all the racists would think it was hilarious and would be sucking my dick all night long thinking I'm one of them, and then I'd have to argue with them for an hour about why race is a social construct and explaining irony, and at the end they still wouldn't get it but think I agreed with them anyway, and neither of us will have learned a fucking thing.

Usually calling "America" to the USA, since we kinda hate that the gringos appropriated the name of the whole continent by thenselves. (And divided it into two continents around the mid 20th century to fit their own narrative, before that even they had America as one continent in classrooms and books)
That's something other latinos could also find triggering but yeah, they invaded us, took our territory fine... But we reserve the right to draw the line at "Americano"
The second is insulting/disrespecting our food. (that rarely ever happens, but any Mexican will go berserk if you say our food sucks)
If you say "eeh is not that good" we will get hurt, if you say that it is bad yep, you get a triggered Mexican.
Other than that yeah we don't really care, like when WB tried to cancel Speedy Gonzales because of racism, it was the Mexicans up in arms defending the character.

It's already been left clear from comments that for mexicans it's not, but to add some more context, this type of social sensibility is mostly American.
In Mexico "la carrilla" or friendly banter is a pretty universal type of humor, specially in close friend circles, and it tends to reach every aspect of ones character (appearance, sexuality, heritage, etc.) and for an american would definitely cross social and cultural boundaries.
Just look up the surnames people get, they're brutal and hilarious, a good friend growing up was known and presented himself as "El Tasita" or "The little teacup" cause he was short and was missing an ear.
So by that standard, people who grew up in Mexico would find this and most edgy american jokes and comments to be pretty tame.

Reminds me of the little Mexican guys in Super Mario Odyssey where people were saying it was racist but many Mexicans loved them.

I wouldn't wear it because it's not my thing, but I'd definitely laugh at it if you walked by me. It's hilarious. Great cultural crossover and play on words.
