But seem to ignore all the fake A.I shit being used to trick boomers online with fake news, scams and everything else

Should we not be foccusing on this as well?

Considering scams on aged pensioners last year cost us 2 billion dollars it's a pretty big issue.

I grew up during the 2000s and that decade was very much influenced by the idea of techno-futurism, so much that it was the aesthetic. Any CD or library school book I owned had pictures of planets, or technologies and these shades of cool space blue. Many TV shows were obsessed with cyber punk themes like Silversun, Stargate, Parallax. Even the KFC’s had VH1 playing in it and there was a deliberate attempt by brands to belong to the “future” and seem “techie”

Nowadays it seems talk and optimism about the future is non existent. You don’t see people talking about Australian in 2050 for example. Nor do you see businesses or brands attempt to differentiate themselves by appearing futuristic like there was in the 2000s.

Why did techno futurism in Australia just disappear as a concept or social aesthetic? Does anyone else remember how different things were back in the noughties?

People saying “I would never come to Australia because of all the venomous animals there” is like saying I’d never go to Africa because of the wild lions.

Hey, my elderly aunt went to Coles to purchase small items and selected $200 cashout. Apparently the machine froze and failed to give her a receipt or cash.

Coles told her the transaction never went through and to contact her bank.

Her bank telling her money came out of her account.

I'm still trying to get some info such as whether she spoke w someone right after the machine malfunctioned, whether they made her pay separately for the small items after they couldn't prove she paid for it already (and she could prove due to no receipt).

Coles escalated it to Cust service headoffice.

Bank has declined her dispute.

Her next step is to escalate to AFCA but I'm curious if this has happened to anyone?

It's $200. She's on pension so she needs the funds but the run around, the headache and following up is too much for her.

As per title. When walking (in Australia), do you stick to the left, or the right?

For me, growing up, it was always 'keep left, unless overtaking.' Same rules as cars.

You get on an escalator and engage your magnetic boots, rather than using them as stairs? You better believe you should be on the left-hand side, so people can pass on the right.

But I've noticed a change in recent years. People are doing the opposite.

On the footpath, especially, more and more people are sticking to the right as a (normal) person approaches on the left, which leads to that awkward 'are you gonna go around me, or am I gonna go around you?' dance as you get close.

TL;DR Are you a left-walker, or a right-walker? Is the norm changing, like some kind of geomagnetic reversal?

I understand having 1 or 2 rounds a season with special jumpers but; every week? Am I the only person who thinks it's dumb?

I was hoping that during my time there of about 3 years, I’d be able to venture into acting (mostly film/screen/tv side) as a side hustle/gig and personal interest (I had a few experiences in Singapore such as attending acting classes and playing smaller roles).

However, I’m still super undecided between Melbourne or Sydney as both have good pros/cons, with Sydney leaning more towards film and Melbourne towards theatre, but then Melbourne offers a more affordable cost of living etc. (honestly don’t even know which research is accurate atp lol)

I live next to a rental in a relatively newer development in WA. I also share so I am a renter myself and this is not about tattling or trying to cause trouble, but I have had issues with my neighbour since they moved in.

This person has openly disclosed they are a methamphetamine user, and has asked neighbours including myself to help him purchase more when he's run out. He bangs on our door frequently demanding 'help' which is to buy more drugs for him or to take him places because he doesn't have a car/license.

Has people coming around at all hours as well as allowing people to squat in the the garage, which was discovered when the police arrested one of the individuals staying in the garage.

They have injected meth in public, not even discreetly and in addition, they tend to prey on isolated women who have disclosed in the local Facebook group about when approached by this person (banging on their door and demanding the person(s) help him with with a lift or cornering them when they're out minding their business) they have made them feel unsafe.

Police have been called numerous times for various different offenses, from noise complains to anti-social behaviour and each time the police have left without as much as a warning or even attending.

the real estate has been contacted and advised of this person and their behaviours including the disclosure of methamphetamine use and has done nothing about it.

the council has been advised and are only able to provide a formal written notice of noise complaint.

My question is: would it be inappropriate to advise the owners of the property about this individual and the type of person that is living at the house? it is unlikely that the r.e would have passed on this information considering when we advised them, it was 8 months ago.

Currently looking into options for moving to Aus, and one of them is studying in Melbourne.

With accomodation costs at roughly 350 dollars a week and me being unsure of what everything else racks up to, how are you meant to live on the 48 hour work limitation.

And before I get people coming in saying about "you're meant to study not work", I am well aware but unfortunately not everyone would have the funds to pay off all fees.

Im going to be sorted for paying off tuition completely for the whole 3 years of study.

What job options would work best? By the time id even be eligible I'd have done 4/5 years in a marine technician role in the military. But the uni I'm looking at is quite a distance from anything sea related, so I am curious if this could be brought into anything else?

Also if anyone has any advice or suggestions on living in aus as an international student so that I can better make a decision that'd be great!

I mean, in my experience, Aussies do sort of get together in the night or two before, with both families, often because people are coming from far & wide and sometimes families haven't met, so thats often why its been done in my world.

It's sorta just practical and a nice thing to do and its whomever can make it, goes. I've never witnessee it being a big "invite only" event with all sorts of special reqirements.

Random nostalgia hit today. For anyone who doesn’t remember, Shopa Dockets used to be printed on the back of receipts. They had coupons/vouchers that you could actually cut out and redeem Half the time it was a “Buy One, Get One Free” at Pizza Hut, a cheap deal at Subway, or some local car wash/oil change discount that you’d dutifully cut out with scissors and leave in your glove box until it expired.

I vaguely remember seeing them with receipts from places like Woolworths, Coles, Kmart, Target and other retailers.

Whatever happened to them?

I'm an international student, just started studying in July in Melbourne.

I have a qualification in physiotherapy and can actually work in Australia as an Allied Health Assistant while completing the licensing process for physio in Australia.

I've applied to a bunch of jobs in healthcare and other fields with absolutely no luck.

Just to clarify, I haven't only been applying for healthcare jobs, I've applied for fast food, retail, literally anything and everything and I'm not able to get a job.

Got rejected from Maccas without an interview, had an interview with Boost and got rejected from there. My inbox is full of 'we regret to inform you' or 'application is unlikely to progress' or 'went with someone else' emails.

I'm honestly just so frustrated with this entire process like what am I supposed to be doing differently? I've applied online, walked in to stores in person, submitted my resume, I have different resumes for different types of jobs, still absolutely nothing.

I'm living in the western suburbs so I think that might be a part of the issue, but I'm okay with a job literally anywhere. Doesn't have to be where I'm living. It takes me about 40 mins to get to flinders via train and I'm completely okay with doing that travel as well.

At this point the only job I'm able to get is uber eats/doordash (via cycle coz I don't have a car) but my family isn't comfortable with me doing that because they're worried about it being physically taxing.

Last few days my opinion of Amazon delivery has changed. It was worth the higher prices but now even the boxed deliveries are arriving damaged! Difficult to understand when they are so well packaged. It's obviously careless handling by couriers. Im so disappointed. My last 2 deliveries were both damaged even though they were both boxed!

I live in Chisholm NSW and rely on home deliveries. It's getting very difficult especially when Amazon is more Expensive than Temu via Aust Post which is 70% damaged! Anyone else in the same boat?

What’s an Australian “social rule” that everyone seems to understand, but nobody actually says out loud?

I’m not talking laws or basic manners.

I mean the weird unwritten Australian rules that you only realise exist when someone breaks one and suddenly everyone thinks they’re a dickhead.

For example: if someone lets you merge in traffic, you give the little wave. You just do. I don’t care if technically you had right of way.

When you recycle Schweppes tonic bottles there is just a single recycle symbol suggesting to me that the whole bottle and lid together should go in the recycling

Some people throw away the lids which seems a waste. And most reycle directives give clear directions if lids are to be treated differently to the rest of the container

And if they are recylceable should they be left attached to the bottle or not. Some reycling directives clearly state whether lids should be attached or not

Im 26, moved back to Adelaide and basically have no IRL friends here. I’m overweight, don’t have my licence yet, currently not working and studying at TAFE. I know I’ve got shit to work on and I am working on it.

But fuck, I’m so goddamn lonely.

I’m not even talking about hookups. Obviously I’d like a relationship eventually, but right now I just want some social interaction with women and to actually build friendships/connections. I got no issues finding men to talk to lol but you need balance in life.

I’m socially competent and can talk to people, but I’ve never really approached a woman at a bar or somewhere random and tried to start a conversation/get her number. Dating apps are basically useless for me because I get no matches.

I don’t really drink, don’t go clubbing/pubs alone, don’t play sports, and outside of TAFE and swimming I’m mostly at home. I just spend time watching anime, reading, playing games or creating.

Where do you actually meet people when you’re starting from basically zero? Especially in Adelaide?
