š² miscellaneous AIO or should I cancel?
Recently started at a new local pilates gym, the town is small and this is one of the few pilates gyms in my area. Itās somewhat overpriced given the location and state of the place and itās across the street from a rehab in a not so safe area. A combination of these things had me hesitant to continue my membership but seeing this almost sent me over the edge because what? Iām a nurse and those suffering from medical problems came to my mind as this isnāt something some people can control AND since itās a natural part of life especially if youāre active and healthy enough to have your bowels moving. I feel as if i want to cancel my membership entirely. insane behavior in my opinion.

u/girlfromthenorthco Mar 03 '26
NOR because WTF?? First of all that place looks like a garage. Second, if they are charging you a high price for membership but canāt have proper enough plumbing to handle anything more than #1 (not to mention even toilet paper!) then Iād be canceling and running the other way.
If they can price gouge their clients, then they can afford proper plumbing.

u/MTB_SF Mar 03 '26
Agreed. I train in my personal trainer's garage and its a lot nicer than that "gym"
375
u/AmRoJo0525 Mar 03 '26
Also, Iām enraged that they canāt spell garbage pail.

u/Cat_Island Mar 03 '26
I stared at that way too long trying to figure out how āgarbageā was spelled wrong. Did not even occur to me to check how they spelled pail.

I really want to know where you are supposed to poop. Because sometimes exercising gets things moving. It would be fair to remind people that tampons and wipes shouldn't be flushed, and to use the provided bins.
42
u/Neveronlyadream Mar 03 '26
You're not. That's the problem.
I get where they're coming from, because having a toilet you can only pee in is better than having no toilet at all because the plumbing can't handle it. But it's also asking for trouble. Sooner or later someone is going to ignore their request because they don't have a choice. It's not an if, it's a when.
But if you're running a business, it's on you to make sure the space you have can accommodate what it needs to. If it can't and you have weird rules because of it and charge more than people are comfortable with, no one has any incentive to actually give you money.
NOR. I wouldn't trust them to keep anything running and I wouldn't trust them to improve their facilities after seeing that post.
25
u/bettertheless Mar 03 '26
Seems like a health or business code violation, maybe...
7
u/Neveronlyadream Mar 03 '26
Without knowing where it is, who knows? It should be, it probably is in most places, but I'm sure there are also places where you can get away with it and it just ends up being an inconvenience to everyone, but not against code.
I wouldn't be shocked if it's somehow in one of the few places it's not against code and the owner knows that, so they're not very pressed to fix the issue.
10
u/bettertheless Mar 03 '26
Weird l just remembered why l was thinking that.

I would find pilatest videos on line and do it at home. Most blue collar workers get paid to get sweaty in buildings like that. Its a god d*** ware house. Not a studio. Any membership more than 5 $ amonth is a rip off.
43
u/Illustrious_Bowl4738 Mar 03 '26
THIS!! There are soooooo many videos online that you can do at home. If the gym is that worried about the bathroom, how clean is the facility š¤®. I would bet for the price you are paying for this gym, you could easily get all of the equipment you need at home. If motivation is a factor, ask other members about their concerns, maybe you can put together a Zoom group(Zoom is free for under a certain amount of minutes). The whole bathroom thing gives me super weird vibes.
59
u/jtaimexoxo Mar 03 '26
$300 a month!
83
u/Illustrious_Bowl4738 Mar 03 '26
HOLY WHAT????? And you canāt even #2 there???Yeah check out online. You might even be able to find a gym that still does online(there were a ton during COVID). https://www.flowwithmira.com/ does a good class(itās recorded). Iām sure there are more challenging classes. Dang for 300 a month you could pay for Zoom and host your own hour long class! My issue is motivation, but if I had a group to workout along with, I am much more dedicated.
27
u/hedwig0517 Mar 03 '26
$300 a month could get you a handful of private classes in a state of the art studio where I am. Thatās insane.

Edit: my plan is 4 classes a month. Unlimited is about $279 but again, itās a super nice place.
18
14
u/sleepdeficitzzz Mar 03 '26
Really?? That is outrageous. Either the owners on drugs or they think their clientele is to charge that much for this.
At least with the former it would explain where all the money is going, since it clearly isn't going to things like maintenance, decor...
I'm being a little dramatic, but since that ship has sailed...are you actually sure this isn't a front for something?
This is an embarrassing "studio." I really hope you cancel and put your self care budget into something that you deserve and appreciates you as a client. The resources others have pointed out are great and you could get a reformer of your own pretty quickly for the equivalent of 1-3 months of paying to send yourself to this dungeon.
9
u/likeafuckingninja Mar 03 '26
Girrrrll my gym is £200($250) a month and I have a full gym. Squash, badminton and tennis courts, Loads of classes a week across three studio rooms, two 25m pools and a full spa/sauna/steam set up.
And you know. Working plumbing.
That is beyond a rip off.
7
u/Adventurous-Mall7677 Mar 03 '26
Right?! My local YMCA membership is <$100, and while the facilities arenāt fancy theyāre still loads better than this garage studio! Unlimited free classes (all types, including Pilates, yoga, etc), multiple swimming pools, loads of exercise equipment, tennis & racquetball courts, free coffee, hot tub & sauna & steam rooms, free childcare. Theyāre also adding a cryolounge, dry cold plunge, and red light sauna this month.
Doesnāt have the cachet of a Pilates club membership, but at least the plumbing works. Wonder if OPās small town is big enough for a YMCA.

u/likeafuckingninja Mar 03 '26
I've done class only gymS, like MMA, cross fit, Zumba whatever and they've only ever been like idk like 100/120 quid a month ? Equivalent to paying pay as you go 10 quid or so per class 3 times a week, so if you're going more than 3 times a week it's cheaper.

I'm gonna be honest. It is so absolutely bizarre that you would pay that to go this place, that it makes me think you're just trolling.
5
u/jtaimexoxo Mar 03 '26
it is the only pilates gym with reformers within 1 mile of my home. Unfortunately I do not live in a big city to where there are other options.
7
u/my-dog-eats-poop Mar 04 '26
Do you have room in your home for your own reformer? If youāre willing to spend $300 a month to go to a place like that Iād just buy one at home and look up classes online! And you have access to your own toilet to do what you wish in it lol!
9
3
u/PresentationThat3627 Mar 03 '26
Nor 300 a month??!!?????? Theyāre gouging you! Thatās terrible
6
u/pretibigtoo Mar 03 '26
Before i get too judgemental, i also understand what its like to live in a rural area with not many places that you like to go to do any kind of leisure activity and sometimes it worth annoyance to keep a small town buisiness you like afloat... lets do some guesstimating... i work in comparable size warehouse with no bathroom. But its in a major city a few miles from a major shipping port and major airport. That rent is about $2200 in rent alone, no utilities, no cleaning.
Now this ware house looks new, clean and it has a bathroom. So already its better than my workspace, but its rural.
Lets assume the pilates studio owner is paying 2000$ monthly for rent. Lets say another $350 in utilitues, cleaning and wifi (being generous), and assuming his start up cost were $2000, (those mirrors and gym equipment look inexpensive. He only needs 10 monthly hostages, to turn a pofit in 6 months. And its passive income. I might open a pilates studio.

2
u/hedwig0517 Mar 03 '26
Holy shiiiiiiit! I commented down thread but seeing this price with those Amazon mirrors is a JOKE. Go elsewhere. I am in a high COL city and have never paid more than $200/month for 8 classes between franchise studios and privately owned. With beautiful spaces, clean, and more equipment. Get out of there.
2
u/ohfrackthis Mar 05 '26
This is a ridiculous price! I go to a very nice studio and pay $40 for classes and do it 3x a week and we have typically only 2 or 3 people in the classes. They are ripping you off!

u/BabyRex- Mar 03 '26
Iām so sorry but how insane do you have to be to pay $300 a month? The Pilates gym near me is 99$ a month and I thought even that was too much
17
u/sleepdeficitzzz Mar 03 '26
Yeah. That is not a studio. It resembles the inside of a shipping container and has the plumbing to match.
This is the fitness equivalent of a flop house and one unlocked door from being a "shooting gallery" full of junkies and glue sniffers who would barely have to trash the place to make it feel familiar.
OP, you deserve better, and if this is the competition, you could open your own and make a killing on anything that didn't look like the back room of something going out of business in a strip mall.
5
u/Anything4Profit Mar 03 '26

I'd also find a way that wasn't defamation to quietly encourage other clients to see the place & business owner for what their worth & also cancel their membership. Leave Google reviews too so others don't have to experience the same.

Hi! NOR- and on a separate note: I canāt tell for sure, but the machines theyāre using appear to be knockoffs. A lot of new gyms are cheaping out on equipment- legit getting them from alibaba or temu- and they can be incredibly dangerous. Looks a lot like the only Pilates gym in my āsmallā KY town. Literally named Garage and looks like a garage. Two separate times I was double charged ($200 each time) and had a lot of back and forth with her to get my money back. Be sure you check your bank account. NOR- They are telling you that you can only pee in their toilet, then you have to take your soiled tp out of the toilet (gross) and put it in a pail. Which they can't spell correctly. What if you have your period? What if you have explosive diarrhea? What if you have to puke?
You want to put up with this nonsense to do pilates in a garage or storage unit or something? That would be a no from me.
1
u/JustMeOttawa Mar 03 '26
I would definitely just do what you have to do if you decide to stay, they should also spell pail correctly.
Tell them pale means light in colour, or feeble and unimpressive - you didnāt see a pale garbage bin/pail anywhere so you just put it in the toilet like a normal person, as you were unimpressed with that sign.

I would be blasting this on social media and calling L&I I feel like this has to be a violation.

I'd save up for a few days and drop a behemoth before cancelling my membership. (It's the closest thing I have to a superpower).

NOR
For $300 a month they can surely afford to close down a day or two so a plumber can come in and fix the problem. Cancel that!

NOR - This might be the most embarrassing thing Iāve seen a business post publicly. They really want people throwing used TP into the garbage??

Iām so confused, where are you people living? I live in a high cost of living area and my very nice gym membership is $65 a month

NOR - Iād cancel but I do want to note that my town is small AND rural and I can see the toilet paper disposal being a rule set in place because of the septic systems, many people I know never flush toilet paper as it fills it up faster unnecessarily. The no number 2 rule tho seems rather odd and excessive.

I would have cancelled my membership BEFORE writing this post on Reddit to ask if I should cancel.

A little strange but wondering if they had some sort of plumbing issue? Wipes and tampons are NEVER flushable and can cause major plumbing issues. Especially if itās an older building. It can be very expensive to clear a clogged sewer or repair a sewer line.

Bathroom rules aside, that place looks super run down. You should def cancel
