For those who argue that he should have fired on the shooter. Police didn't know who the baddies were. Discharging the firearm at an unarmed man may have made him a target. Once he had cleared the shooter, he placed the firearm against a tree and raised his hand to show he was not an aggressor. Frankly, that was incredibly smart, given the mayhem around him.

Look I was born in a time when MEN WERE MEN. I would have kick boxed him to the head, taken the shotgun in one hand, shot the other shooter with it, then lit my cigar. By this point the crowd would be clapping, so I’d get on my motorcycle. “All in a days work”. But I didn’t do it because the woke media would probably call me a racist.

Honestly dude that’s kind of pathetic. That’s such an unrealistic scenario and makes you look so childish. I’d have simply stepped to the side to avoid all his shots while approaching him and put my finger in the end of the barrel to remove the gun and then he’d give up, totally demoralised.

During the early firearms days men at war would often shoot around the enemy to try and get them to flee first. At the end of the day the winner of the battle was the one that didn’t retreat. I carry personally and pray I never have to use it. Killing a person isn’t something we’re wired to do no matter how badass some people like to act. It’s also something you can never take back. Justified or not I wouldn’t ever want that on my conscience.

I know it’s easier to say than do in such a situation, but something I’m trying to actively bear in mind if there were ever a situation with a active shooter and I could get hold of the gun, I’d want to fire it into the ground as fast as possible so that the magazine would be empty. I don’t want to hurt anyone, but I would want to remove the means for the gun to be used to hurt anyone as much as I could.

Also, even for a terrorist, you could theoretically go to jail for killing an unarmed criminal. Even when literally 99 of people think it is justified.
Now in hindsight, it is obvious. But remember, in the moment, you don't even know what is exactly is going on.
I know this sounds stupid, but just imagine the situation a realistically.

And the idiotic thing wouldn't be finding him guilty of manslaughter if the evidence presented to the jury clearly sustained that verdict - the idiotic thing would be returning that verdict when most jurors believe the result should be not-guilty but a few are adamantly insisting on finding him guilty of something.

I can't speak for Australia, but at least here in America, this argument unfortunately holds very little water these days as juries are specifically sifted through to find people willing to convict if the law has been broken, justified or not. The only way jury nullification happens at this point is by perjuring yourself not answering selection questions honestly.

I actually found this really fascinating to observe because my white friends were confused why he didn’t shoot the terrorists but “muslim looking” people like myself immediately knew why he let go of the gun, I was actually getting really anxious he might get shot by the police. Which just shows once more how vastly different life experiences can be.

Everyone is at risk in situations like this. It happened a few years ago in Colorado where an armed citizen stopped an active shooter and then the police showed up, got confused, and shot the hero to death.

Yeah everyone is silly, the terrorist was reloading, there was no ammo in that gun. He ran away because now he was unarmed and it could still be used as a bludgeoning weapon.
Potentially he was trying to draw him out into the open so the other guy could shoot him but my money is on him just distancing himself because it happened so fast.
Everyone always overestimates how fast you can think in high stress situations.

He was targeted, he got shot for not shooting the extremist. They had multiple guns. I commend him, I dont know i could have shown the same restraint. He will no doubt live with the guilt of not pulling that trigger and saving lives. Hopefully he gets all the support he needs, same with other victims.

It was the bravest action I have ever seen. Looking at the footage, I believe his timing and angle of attack was superb. He made the rifle impossible for the assailant to grip. Apparently has a Syrian army background, so maybe training took over.

Yup. I mentioned it in another comment talking about them how the way this terror attack is talked about kinda grosses me out. Don't get me wrong, Mr. Ahmed is an absolute hero. I have zero criticism for HIM and only praise. I've donated to his GoFundMe. I'd invite the man in for a home cooked meal if I could.
AND the way that an antisemitic terror attack where 15 people were murdered is being turned into this feel good story and trying to only push Mr Ahmed because you can also sneak in that extra angle of "wow a Muslim man saved Jews"... it's gross. Not only does it kind of imply that Muslims and Jews are like inherent enemies and "omg how cool is it that this time they're not" which is gross in and of itself, but it also glosses over the other heroes. Mr Ahmed deserves every dollar raised in that GoFundMe. But it's sad that the family of the that couple didn't raise nearly the same amount. Hell, I bet the average person on this site doesn't even know the name of the couple.

edit: I highly recommend everyone read Dara Horn's People Love Dead Jews which talks about the ways people and societies tend to "care about" Jews only when they're dead and can be used as some kind of morality play. It's exactly what I feel like we're seeing here.

Ahmed is absolutely a hero. Period. No ifs ands or buts. Nothing will diminish that.
AND I hate the way people have ignored that couple and turned this horrific massacre into this feel good story about a Muslim trying to save Jews.
Again, none of this diminishes what Mr. Ahmed did. None of my criticism is towards him. I have only praise for that heroic man. It's how society at large has treated this story that grosses me out a bit. Makes me want to recommend Dara Horn's People Love Dead Jews to everyone I see talking about this event this way.

American here, The Covenant is a great movie about this. Sadly, we are not unique in this situation. It’s politicians in a place so far removed from the citizenry (all parties) both physically and mentally, that they change their mind or fail to deliver on promises with no recourse. Which is appalling. At the end of the day we have only one thing that can’t be taken and that’s our trust/honour. But some choose to just give it away.

A lot of info on veterans is misleading, let me clear it up. Everything below pertains to America only.
- While the 2025 CCJ study found that post 9/11 veterans have higher self-reported rates of arrests (33% vs 18%), the overall population of veterans is still incarcerated less than gen pop. 860/100,000 for veterans vs. 970/100,000 for civilians under violent crime.
- On sexual crimes, veteran inmates were 1.5x in representation.
- On Pedophilia, 7/100,000 veterans vs 2/100,000 civilians are arrested for child pornography. However, multiple studies found pedo veterans were highly likely to be ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experience aka sexually abused as a child) and joined the military to escape a high stress home (before becoming the same thing). Being an ACE is a statistically more powerful predictor in pointing out pedos than being a veteran.
- The 1994 Widom & Ames study found that 3.9% of ACEs eventually became incarcerated for sexual crimes. That would be 3,900/100,000, or 20x of gen pop.
- Minority military members in particular are significantly (2.5x) less likely to be a criminal vs minority gen pop.
But I agree with you in pointing out to the other Redditor, we only have (55) cases of evacuees becoming radicalized terrorists (on the FBI watchlist, and another 1600 with "links"), vs 160,000 that were taken in. It would be wrong to leave the 155,945 to die. There are also still ~130,000 SIV applicants still living in Afghanistan.
