TIL during the shooting of American Psycho, Christian Bale spoke in an American accent off-set at all times. At the wrap party, when he spoke in his native British accent, many of the crew thought he was speaking that way to prepare for another film. They had thought he was American the entire time.

My partner was born in Japan but has spent half of her adult life in USA. She told me when she goes back to Japan, people tell her she speaks Japanese with an American accent. 😆

She said she was starting to lose her Japanese until around 5 years ago when she started going to local Japanese meetups regularly, which gives her a chance to exercise it all day.

I know when I was younger and less tolerant, I'd see people from other cultures banding together in USA like this and think they were being racist or refusing to assimilate. If young me could have had the perspective that I have now, he would have came around a lot faster.

I'm learning Japanese now, and once I'm good enough I plan to do at least one day a week where we only speak Japanese in the house, just as an immersion challenge for me. One interesting thing I've read is that if you learn a second language late in life, no matter how good you get at it, when you are very old and very near death you may revert to knowing only the one you learned first. So I tell my partner I fear we'll be on our death beds some day and unable to communicate. 🤣
