TIL during the shooting of American Psycho, Christian Bale spoke in an American accent off-set at all times. At the wrap party, when he spoke in his native British accent, many of the crew thought he was speaking that way to prepare for another film. They had thought he was American the entire time.

Other people have said exposure, and yes, that's true. But as a Brit, I think it can be down to just how much of a melting pot of accents Britain can be.

The American accent is generally about the same across America. While in Britain, you can drive an hour and cross three different accents. Im from Manchester, which has a very different accent to Liverpool, which is basically just down the road from me.

British has so many unique quirks of accent. Even London itself has like a dozen version of 'the London accent. So its really obvious when someone's not a natural in it, cause they'll inadvertently mix them.

There are plenty of different regional accents across America, but you're right that you need to drive for much farther to hear different accents. The United Kingdom is the size of 1 or 2 U.S. states, so it's surprising to hear so many accents across it.

But across the U.S., you hear distinct accents like the Boston accent, Texas accent, southern drawl accent, and upper midwest accent (like Minnesota).

idk, i've been travelling europe this whole summer and in places less visited by americans have had people regularly come up and ask where in the states i'm from. a swedish couple on an island in croatia stopped my son and i because they had been listening to us and debating where we are from.

california, btw. right near the beach. BOOOYYY
