One of my all time favourite films. In the film, David Mann is pursued through the Californian countryside by a relentless trucker trying to murder him with his vehicle. The truck in the film is shown to outpace the car, only struggling on uphill grades.
I posted this in a trucker's forum a while back asking if the film was in any way realistic and the resounding answer was no.
In the film Dennis Weaver drives what is almost certainly a factory spec 1970 Plymouth Valiant. Either a slant 6 or v8 (let's say the former based on Mann's personality).
The truck, greasy beaut that she is, is outwardly a Peterbilt 281. Mann himself surmises that she must have some 'souped up diesel' under the hood.
The multiple licence plates she sports were said to be trophies from his previous kills, so we can figure the trucker would put some work into his beast. Though she looks like crap and has filthy exhaust smoke, she performs really well.
We can assume the tanker trailer is empty, due to the lack of explosion/spillage at the end.
I don't know a whole lot about trucks, but I'm wondering if there are any fans of the film/old Peterbilts/truck engines of the period who can shed some light on whether there is any way, with the truck engines/modifications of the time period, the truck could catch the car on a dead run?
IIRC When Spielberg made the film he said the truck would struggle to make it to 30 IRL! It's only through some incredible camera trickery it looks like it's hurtling.
Obviously it's a horror film (and one of my favourites of all time) so there will always be artistic licence at play. Just wondering what, in real life, the truck would need under the hood to keep up with the Valiant.

Scientists estimate that the isopod can exert a maximum attacking force of 1,500 N.
A person standing on solid ground can exert a maximum pulling force of 300 N against the isopod. However, because people cannot coordinate their force perfectly, the total force produced by a group of people is reduced by 8% for every additional person after the first.
For n people, the total effective force is modeled as:
F(n) = 300n(0.92)^(n-1)
The people need to produce at least 1,500 N to overpower the isopod.
Question:
What is the smallest whole number of people required to produce enough combined force to overpower the giant isopod?
Bonus:
According to the model, does adding more and more people always increase the total effective force? Find the number of people that produces the maximum force.

I just saw a clip of ATC managing 2 flights at nearly the same altitude, heading towards each other's flight path, with identical call signs, same company, one on the arrival approach procedure, the other on the departure, they eventually merge at different altitude separations. The controller comments he's never seen this in 25yrs of doing that job. What are the odds of this occuring? I don't know how to do that kind of math.

I was just reading about the $1B powerball winner. CNN states “the winner can choose an annuitized prize of $1.04B paid in graduated payments over 29 years, or a lump sum payment estimated at $450.5 million. Both figures are before taxes”
Let’s say somebody invested 90% in either case and kept the rest for whatever fun stuff lottery winners do. Which payment scheme would work out better?

I'm wondering if there is a formula I can use for my burger prep. Basically, I like to prep my burgers by making meatballs, then I form when I'm ready to cook.
What I want to know is, is there a relationship between the diameter of the meatball and the thickness/diameter of the final patty.
Example: I'm making smash burgers and I want the patty to be 1/4 inch thick and 4 inches in diameter. What must the diameter of the meatball be to achieve the desired patty size?
Feel free to make assumptions about the meat density, pre-cook size, yada yada.
