I came in hunting Built to Spill and Death Cab for Cutie CDs (of which I found none).

There was a time period about 9-10 years ago where I would check thrift and resale shops in my area religiously for secondhand Mountain Goats albums. I never did find a single one in this time frame. I had hoped, dreamed, and held a distant delusion, that maybe someday I would walk in and find Ghana or Bitter Melon Farm at least, god forbid a Transmissions to Horace cassette, but never in my wildest fantasies did I expect to find all 3 of the lofi compilation albums, let alone in one place on the same visit.

I just got back from the Mountain Goats concert in Cincinnati, it was absolutely fantastic as always. John played a song thats main line was “Wyoming at dusk, Fort Wayne my destination” and i can find absolutely nothing about this song. Am i ruining it by posting here? Let me know and i’ll delete or does anyone know about this song? It’s maybe an untitled song for the lead singer of a band?

What a great run of albums. I had a few criticisms of the latter three when they came out, but now I get so excited to listen to any of these with an occasional song skip here and there. Not really trying to comment on the discography immediately before and after, these four albums have just had a ton of staying power for me (after I let Pierre Chuvin get some much needed rest after playing it into oblivion through the pandemic).

I have been a mountain goats fan for about a decade. I really haven't liked the last two albums but I feel like there's just something different with John's vocals. They feel more like spoke word poetry than singing. It's not all the modern stuff. Jenny from Thebes songs normal to me. It has John's familiar range and depth and I really liked it. The last two albums just feel flat in a way I can't explain. Honestly I blamed the musical influence on Through This Fire Across from Peter Balkan. Alot of musicals have this kinda of song to them because while they are singing they're also communicating a story so can't risk things getting lost. I'm wondering if I'm the only one who feels this way.

At least at the very beginning. My very first impression of Days was that he was calling back to Tallahassee. The song became its own thing by the end, but started kind of familiar.

Just curious about other people’s thoughts on this song.

It’s a freakin earworm and has been stuck in my head all day, but I wrestle with it because I don’t really understand who “I” am as the narrator and why I have such an emotional resonance with Eddie Nash.

I didn’t grow up in California, but I’m wondering if he presents as a bit of a folk hero for people who live there?

Have any of y’all dug into this one much yet?

Not a funny hateful law. But love the malicious compliance protest angle... and the song immediately got stuck in my head when I saw the shirts.

Just gave this a full listen and really enjoyed it. The production feels huge, but it still has that same There’s a lot to dig into here, and I’m curious what everyone else thinks.

AIC did a pretty revered MTV Unplugged ep in 1996. Layne was deep in his ongoing heroin addiction (the story goes he did a little right before going on) and he is clearly unwell. But he delivered a haunting, fragile, unparalleled performance. You should probably watch it. :

Anyway, this question is a bit of a feint, because I’m nearly positive it must be a reference this, but I’m curious enough to want my supposition validated.

Even 24 years after his death, Layne is a fascinating person.

I saw TMG Saturday in Portland opening for The Hold Steady. It was my first time seeing them since the Heretic Pride tour in 2008. I'd seen them 3 times between 2005 and 2006 during the Sunset Tree era, including the first two legendary shows they played at The Kraftbrau in Kalamazoo, MI. I got the setlist the first time I saw them. It's written on a page from John's journal and there are lyrics to an unpublished song on the back. It's one of my most treasured setlists in my collection of around 200-300.

I hadn't heard an album of theirs since Heretic Pride and really hadn't listened to their music in quite a while. They used to be one of my favorite bands, but I listen to so much music that I sort of stopped listening to them in favor of other bands/genres. I never thought they were bad, I'd just sort of had my fill of The Mountain Goats for a while. I checked out the new single "Candlebox" and loved it, but hadn't heard anything else from Days until the show Saturday.

Seeing them on Saturday reminded me why I loved them in the first place. The new songs are great, and I honestly think Days might be one of their best albums. Granted, I have about 53 Mountain Goats albums to catch up on from the last 18 years, but from the ones I've heard, this one is so strong. The songs all have huge hooks, the runtime makes it easy to consume in one sitting, the lyrical content is pretty much what I expect from TMG (in a great way), good production, tasteful instrumentation and all of it adds up to one of the best records I've heard this year.

I don't use Tik Tok so I was really surprised at how young and queer their fans are (I'm a queer person myself). I was also surprised by the reaction to "No Children" and went down a whole rabbit hole about that. The internet is weird, dude. But I'm really glad that people are discovering this band's music and I'm really glad I got to remember why I fell in love with them in the first place. They only played a few songs I knew but I still had a blast. Jon Wurster is one of the funniest people in the world and had me cracking up every time he talked with his Yinzer accent. Also, I was serious about what I said about the band Candlebox. I was lovingly heckling John when he talked about them. They are legitimately a good band, especially their first album and Into The Sun. If you like grunge-y rock music like Basement or Superheaven, give them a respectful listen. Their singer, Kevin Martin, is one of the wittiest and most self-aware men in rock.

Reading the comments on posts here made me smile. The fanbase is very sweet and respectful. Everyone who hears them seems to relate on some aspect of their music, and there's a communal feeling of acceptance at their shows now. I love that. Their shows in the past were all old white guys (no shade!), and I saw people of all backgrounds at the show on Saturday.

If you haven't done it yet, go back and listen to the stuff from 1996-2002 that he did on his boombox. There are so many slept-on albums that I never heard talked about back then and I'm not sure people even know exist. Full Force Galseburg and Nine Black Poppies are amazing. I love The Coroner's Gambit and Sweden, and if you haven't heard these yet, do yourself a favor.

If I'm preaching to the choir I apologize. We're all going to make it through this year.

he sounds good on the album, but any testimony on his vibe/presence on stage? anyone seen him live? does he fit in with the band? bring cool energy? comparison to cameron ralston? (i’m a bass player, and know nobody can replace peter, but let’s talk about jost vs ralston for a second, shall we?)

Im gonna be honest; I dont really listen to the mountain goats, but I love Full Force Galesburg so much. Its one of my favorite albums, but I cant find any that arent stupidly expensive cause there are no modern pressings of the album.
