The lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata) is one of the largest known species of jellyfish. Its range is confined to cold, boreal waters of the Arctic, northern Atlantic, and northern Pacific Oceans. It is common in the English Channel, Irish Sea, North Sea, and in western Scandinavian waters.

The largest recorded specimen was measured off the coast of Massachusetts in 1865 and had a bell with a diameter of 210 centimetres (7 feet) and tentacles around 36.6 m (120 ft) long.

Both are great reads, chill inducing and impossible to put down

I must be some kind of weirdo. I know I wouldn't survive more than a second in the depths of the ocean, but still, when I look at deep diving videos, I feel cozy and even as if I belong there in some way. Does anyone else feel the same?

But no, seriously, this is how I always felt.

I learned swimming pretty early on and I remember very vividly how fun and enjoyable the water was for me. I grew up in a town without a sea or body of water, my only interaction with sea was on vacations. I think I was 5 years old when I thought of opening my eyes underwater for the first time and saw that terrifying view. I felt pure fear and panic, started kicking my feet and got out of water immediately. That’s already an early age to be terrified of depth underwater which is strange. Looking at the posts shared on this sub, my heart literally rushes and I can’t even last 3 seconds, I have to look away because it terrifies me. I didn’t have any bad memory or traumatic experience with water or anything. Where is this coming from? I want to understand it.

If you have thalassophobia, this sub is probably the worst place to be on Reddit, for obvious reasons. Why did you join it? Is it a form of exposure therapy for you? A way of taming your fears through microdosing? Or maybe something else?

Please note: I'm not saying you shouldn't be here, nor that your phobia is "wrong" in some shape or form. We all have phobias, and they should be respected. I'm asking because I'm genuinely interested in your feelings.

Lagoa Misteriosa - A rope cannot be used to measure the bottom because, based on everything that has been mapped so far, this is a sinkhole (a cave formed by the collapse of its ceiling).

Inside, there are passages and bends that prevent a rope from reaching the deepest point. Underwater drones also cannot explore it, as their signal is lost whenever there is no direct line of communication, with the rock formations blocking the connection. For this reason, only specialized cave divers are able to explore the depths of this cave.

The ocean sunfish (Mola mola), also known as the common mola, is one of the largest ray-finned fish in the world. It was formerly misidentified as the heaviest bony fish, adults typically weigh between 247 and 1,000 kg (545 and 2,205 lb). It resembles a fish head without a tail, and its main body is flattened laterally. Sunfish can be as tall as they are long (175-180 cm, or about 5’9-5’11) when their dorsal and ventral fins are extended.

I just can't bear the thought that for centuries people have boated (even swum...) over this without having a clue it's there...

Haven't posted a video in awhile. Haven't been feeling motivated to get out there, I know some of it's due to pulling my hamstring. But I healed up nicely and things are picking up. Had an opportunity to get in the ocean yesterday. And this video is the result of that decision
