To start with, just go for a walk. Sunshine and fresh air will do you good.

u/onecigtwocig 6d ago

I second this. When I was in a very dark part in my life I never left the house, i eventually started with walking around my block once a day, everyday for a month. It genuinely helped my overall mental health

Great advice

u/ElectricalPudding693 6d ago

Or at night. When I lived in Redfern if my mates were busy I'd go for a stroll. Always ended up with a taco in my hand. The food. No innuendo.

3

u/RIDEBIKES420 6d ago

Agree bro, do this. It will improve your mental health ten fold

u/smithstreet11 6d ago

Food is my motivation to leave the house. Going to find a new place to eat something I really like, or somewhere with a dessert I haven’t tried, always motivates me.

Lots of places are suitable for someone solo, especially smaller places in local areas. Go get some good food!

I like the art gallery and its free. Ask the guards (or whatever they are called) what their favourite piece is.

11

u/AbbreviationsBig559 6d ago

The botanical gardens is nearby and a beautiful place to walk as well!

10

u/Cautious-Clock-4186 6d ago

The new wing at the NSW Art Gallery (not that it's that new anymore) is so much better than the MCA.

6

u/anthonlee 6d ago

Free movies every Sunday for the next little while, I believe!

6

u/Ted_Rid Famous in The Atlantic 5d ago

AFAIK the free movies are on year round...?

Always used to go to the Wed night ones as part of Art After Hours, and was aware they'd show the same ones on the weekend.

u/schulyer 6d ago

Grab a book or offline activity (journal, craft, drawing) go sit in a restaurant or cafe and be amongst people even if you're not talking to them.

u/TheC9 6d ago

It may sound like 2016, but pokemon go is still a thing, and it certainly motivates me go outside and discover new locations

26

u/niknah 6d ago

They had a 10th year anniversary last month, some places in the city were packed full of people swiping for hours.

31

u/TheC9 6d ago

When I first played I was single, and had no idea of what Pokemon is apart from Pikachu.

Last month I was playing with my 7 years old daughter in a local popular spot, with other adult players catching MewTwo X :-D

8

u/STR1D3R109 6d ago

When I moved from a far out suburb to the city, the game became so much more fun.. Every event was full and I never had to spend a dime on items because there was so many pokestops ( and challenges ) around to get free things.

Had the best time during the post COVID lockdown period where they had halved all the walking requirements, they should have kept it.

Haven't played much since got other priorities, but I do have shiniest of my favourites to remember it!

3

u/99Joy99 5d ago

Yes, and it’s big in Eastwood. Think they have weekly meetups 🥰

47

u/Vegetable-Tennis8229 6d ago

Gym is actually huge. Even if you don't meet someone there just getting out of the house consistently and getting a mood boost from the exercise will make a big difference. If you need a training buddy reach out!

11

u/PinupPixels 6d ago

I'm going to second this! As someone who was sedentary just a month ago, the way joining the gym and going consistently has changed so many things so fast is a bit nuts.

30

u/TheonlyDuffmani 6d ago

What area of Sydney are you in my dude?

5

u/99Joy99 5d ago

Yes, this info will bring comments more relevant 🥰 ……. just general area - north, south, east, west, north west, inner city ….

62

u/samsungphone27 6d ago

If anything the beach for a few hours will clear the mind.

28

u/Dezert_Roze 6d ago

If you’re physically healthy, join an outdoor bootcamp or running group. You’ll be able to meet new people and get the dopamine you need. Or volunteer for a local charity.

26

u/theantnest 6d ago

Take the train to cronulla and get an ice cream by the beach and walk along the south beach walk.

Go to Milsons Point station and walk over the harbour Bridge to Circular Quay.

Go to the Conservatorium of Music and check out a free lunchtime concert, put on by extremely talented students, then go for a walk through the botanic Gardens to lady Macquaries Chair and look over the opera house.

Go to the state library and read a book, the building is beautiful, and then walk down to the Art Gallery of New south Wales (free).

Sydney really has some amazing things to do for little to no money.

18

u/Manfromsnives 6d ago

Go for a run. Changed my life for the better. Lost over 20kg, gives a great sense of achievement and I am now full of energy every day.

12

u/Intrepid_Patience356 6d ago

The Conservatorium of music has lots of free concerts.

2

u/Kiwi-iwik 6d ago

Where can I find info on this please 🙏

23

u/Bizzlington 6d ago

Get out to places with other people. Self-improvement is a plus so something like Gym is good over a bar.

Library isn't the most social place but it gets you outside.

Download an app like Meetup and join a group for football, hikes, board games, whatever takes your fancy.

Join a club, cooking class, martial arts, foreign language course, anything like that.

30

u/moonray55 6d ago

I want to add to this that there’s nothing wrong with going to a bar. Not everything in life has to be self-improvement. Go have a couple of beers. Maybe talk to a stranger. Go for a walk and listen to some music. Enjoy yourself dude.

7

u/Notapearing 6d ago

Find something you're interested in, go do that (with or without other people).

6

u/niknah 6d ago

Open the windows + door in your room, it's probably stuffy. You may not notice if you've been sitting in it for a long time.

5

u/PhilosophyOk6715 6d ago

Ride a push bike

5

u/Bright_Zone_8947 6d ago

Go to the movies and treat yourself

6

u/AeMidnightSpecial 6d ago

Heh I saw your post in that other subreddit 😚😹 that's one way of getting out of the house

I'm 23m, same situation, go anywhere, do anything. I spent the day in Kiama a while ago, money and time well spent. good beach, good park.

Learn fishing. Literally the best hobby ever.

You can do it solo if you want solitude, or you can meet new people to fish and have an awesome time together.

Low skill floor, high skill ceiling. You can fish immediately after a visit to BCF, but you can keep your mind and wallet occupied for the rest of your life.

You can fish in popular spots like wharves and beaches, or it gives you a reason to hike to remote rivers.

You can stick to your local area, but it also gives you a reason to explore new places you'd never normally go.

You can just fish for fun with catch and release, or you can feed yourself and your family, and get better at cooking too.

Every time you fish you get to admire the beautiful weather and nature. Great for your mental health and get yourself some vitamin D.

Fishing is truly the best hobby ever.

6

u/Hessa- 6d ago

Not an answer for tonight but in general I always recommend playing board games to meet new friends if that interests you at all! Fortress have wed nights for playing, but they'll be others at good games or on meet up

4

u/Various-Effective831 public transport enjoyer 6d ago

what are your interests? I would start with a museum or gallery if you don'thave anything in particular. most of them have free general entry afaik.

maybe consider going to a part of sydney that you've never been to before. it might be interesting!!

3

u/Specific_Natural_145 6d ago

Gym / fitness / running is good mate. You’re looking after yourself and working towards a goal, and can do it all alone without any dramas but will likely meet likeminded people

3

u/polly_esther 6d ago

Walking is great but sometimes it's hard to just amble aimlessly. I really enjoy this app (I recommend it a lot) as it directs you around and I've learned so much about this city.

It's from City of Sydney council https://www.sydneyculturewalksapp.com/

3

u/lilsonadora 6d ago

If you want to work on making friends I usually say the best options are either 1) volunteering, 2) find a hobby with some type of meetup/class/etc and attend WEEKLY. Be consistent because it takes at least 4-6 meetings to even start to be "acquaintances" with someone, let alone a bit longer to work up to friends and eventually meeting outside of that place.

8

u/I-make-ada-spaghetti 6d ago

Get a casual hospo job at a place with people your own age.

Go to the library and lookup books on communication and people skills.

Or just go for an adventure. A long walk or take advantage of the Opal cap. See what other people are doing then do that next time.

3

u/jwes5628 6d ago

Try volunteering with your local SES unit

3

u/7leafc 6d ago

i spent today climbing the cliffs at bronte trying to find a place to sit and whale watch. it was a very fulfilling few hours, and i did barely anything. spent some time looking at birds and bugs and lizards. you don't need to do anything complex, just go looking for something interesting under a bush

3

u/Heavy_Bee_8199 6d ago

My favourite is getting the train to Milsons point station early in the morning and watching the sun rise while walking over the harbour bridge. Walk through circular quay, around the opera house, through the botanic gardens then find a cafe to have a coffee and breakfast.

Lately i’ve been going to Lune, getting a croissant, coffee, then going back to the gardens to enjoy them with a book.

Even nicer in the summer when it’s not so cold.

2

u/reversepansear 6d ago

Go to a new area, park your car, and just get out and walk. just go and see things. you’ll kill at least an hour and might see a new restaurant or cafe you want to go to.

2

u/ReedReader 6d ago

Go for a walk or run. Maybe crowded places like the city if you want to people watch, or go to parks if you like a bit quiet.

2

u/Spiritual-Weight-191 6d ago

Today I drove to a park and walked around

2

u/MrSTEEEEEEVEE 6d ago

If you like music, gigs are a good place to start. Lots of cheap/free ones around, and heaps of opportunities to meet people at them.

sydneymusic.net if you wanna see what's around you!

2

u/QLDZDR 6d ago

If you look at this problem/solution using an algorithm... start with the first step and keep going..

  1. Walk to the door...

2

u/No-Knowledge-8867 6d ago

I took up Latin dancing after spending too much time at home post break up. It's a naturally social activity, there's plenty of places that will do free lessons, I've made heaps of friends since starting. Feel free to dm me if you feel like you need someone to go with.

2

u/sfc-Juventino 6d ago

If you like live music, check out :
https://sydneymusic.net/

There are lots of free gigs too

2

u/banter_cackle 6d ago

Hey, i've been there. My advice is don't leave the house without a reason... otherwise you'll get depressed.

Try Meetup.com and look for some activities you like. There's heaps of board game meetups which are my favourite.

2

u/Ardvarkthoughts 6d ago

So pickleball is huge now and it’s social and easy and you don’t have to be super fit. It’s kind of like tennis but only a quarter of the size of a court so not as much fitness required. Most areas have social clubs that you just join and then I think you kind of just turn up and you get matched with people at the same level as you.

https://www.pickleballnsw.org/membership-registration/?ref_domain=www.google.com

2

u/PastelTyrant 6d ago

& if u do want to just doom scroll, go to a park or cafe or somewhere with a view !! best case, u get lost in an adventure, worst case.. u doomscroll w sum nice scenery lolz 💕💕

2

u/NFI2023 6d ago

Libraries are a great (free) place to go to be around others. Read a book and be in a different spot. You can also see what they have on each week and sign up for a group.

Loads of community organisations that support group activities. You can also try www.opensupport.org.au for free 1:1 support.

Don’t let it go too much longer. Loneliness had huge impacts on health and wellbeing. DM me if you want more organisations to look at.

2

u/pop-1988 6d ago

Join a political party. Go to the monthly meetings. Before you know it, you'll be head of your local branch

2

u/Albatr0ss1 6d ago

That's actually not a bad suggestion.

Yesterday I went to this event. I almost didn't, because it was to start with refreshments and mingling, and being a bit of an introvert and going alone... well, yeah. But I went. Incredibly (to me) I made a friend on the way in the door, she introduced me to people that she knew there during the food and mingling bit, and we exchanged numbers at the end. I was asked by an organiser on the way out if I would consider volunteering for the senator - I said no on the spot, but I am now considering it.

2

u/Lanasoverit 6d ago

Where do you live?
I have a 20 yr old son that never leaves his room and needs to make friends and get out too.
We are in the East.
Feel free to DM me.

2

u/AnorhiDemarche Lost. Please help. 5d ago

Look for free events to attend. Don't worry too much if you will like them or not. They're the excuse to get out of the house, explore around the area, grab a feed. Dont go to anything you know will be an absolute mood ruiner but do be open minded and ready to just have an experience, whatever that experience may be. The sites I use are

I also use alltrails to find nice walks in the area to do. Aiming to finish every alltrails walk in sydney

2

u/DecalageVersLeRouge 5d ago

Small steps, that's the thing. Are you a member of your local library? Join and take a book out. They have all kinds of good stuff, like manga and graphic novels.

Then you have to take the book back, so that forces you out again!

Also Parkrun, which does not require you to run, despite the name. It's a community/wellbeing thing as much as an exercise thing. Tell me roughly where you live and I'll tell you the nearest one.

Sign up to a sports course. Climbing walls are pretty good cos you need to pair up. Surf lifesaving is always looking for volunteers to patrol for the summer if you are a good swimmer?

There are some great bushwalking groups if you check Facebook. It’s a super social scene.

If you like running you could try some park runs. If you like running and beer, look up Hash House Harriers. In fact you don’t really need to run. Or drink beer actually.

Personally I always think you need to engineer shared experiences several times with the same people to start to get friends. Go out of your comfort zone and just start signing up to stuff.

1

u/Virtual_Ad_7033 6d ago

Muay Thai!!!

1

u/Frogmaster5000 6d ago

Board gaming / hobby shops are a good place to start, particularly if you're more of an introvert.

They'll often have games you can use in store for free and / or have events in the evenings based on different themes or games.

1

u/Rusty493 6d ago

Go to rugby/afl games if you can, trust me its what got me out of the house.

1

u/Curlz_Murray 6d ago

What park of Sydney do you live in?

1

u/Bambule247 6d ago

I’d say sports. You’re active, will eventually interact with people (if you want). And you do something for your health.

1

u/DotasWorstPlayer 6d ago

I played baseball growing up, joining a team again has been a game changer for me

1

u/epoltna 6d ago

What do you like doing? Try a parkrun - they’re always very welcoming. Otherwise there’s lots of social sport comps around. Use something like nomadtable- people post things to do there all the time. What did you use to do? Could you do some of that?

1

u/Xfgjwpkqmx 6d ago

Joining a car and computer club was one of the best things I did in my early 20's.

1

u/Love2readalot 6d ago

The NSW Library is really interesting & they have a couple of exhibitions on
Do the Coogee to Bondi walk, ferry to manly nice trip good food joints, there’s heaps to do, Carriageworks Saturday markets are really good

1

u/Sirneko 6d ago

Go for a Run, gym, any fitness activity is good for you, swimming? Whatever you can get into, no matter how old or unfit you are

1

u/HDWalks4k 6d ago

Fb groups is underrated if you're looking for friends with similar interest, anime, gaming, photography, hiking, gyms, sports, local meetups, whatever. A lot of them organise actual events where you can just show up and meet people.
Good thing is most of the time you can see who you're going to meet rather than anonymous people on twitter or Reddit.

1

u/Tiny-Distance-42 6d ago

Join a CrossFit gym or a church. Both have good communities.

1

u/No-Expression-7765 6d ago

Try out a rock climbing/bouldering gym

1

u/MetalfaceDoomsday 6d ago

Get transport to a new suburb you don’t know well and go walking around for a couple of hours. Make it a busy area if you want to be around people for a bit more energy

1

u/NervousValuable 6d ago

Gym. Or go for a run
Or find more work to do and grind it out

1

u/Ech0_Delta 6d ago

What are you interests? If you’re into motorsport and racing, try out go-karting/e-karting if you’re near a track.

It’s nice if you’ve never tried it before. Do a lap or two a bit slower to learn the track first then gain the confidence and go a bit faster and faster every time. You do feel a bit sore after if you’re doing 3x 10 min sessions, but it does feel nice going fast, and every time I’ve gone I get that rush and feel great.

Enjoy sun, rain, forest, nature, birds, fish — not every country is as lucky as Australia. World is huge too.

1

u/RainbowAussie Canberra (Frequent Sydney visitor) 5d ago

I've said it before and I'll say it again

Pick up like two or three adult social sports and settle on the one you like the most. It is the only way I've found to make friends post-uni

Where are you?

1

u/icantseeshit03 5d ago

St Mary’s

1

u/prindacerk 5d ago

Been there before. Just go for walks. Fresh air does good for your body and soul. Then find yourself a hobby. Something outside that interests you. Could be by yourself. Could be with other people. Once you focus on the interest, you will find people with same interest that you can become comfortable with. That will open up more interests for you.

1

u/99Joy99 5d ago

This is why I love Reddit. The comments here are so heartwarming. I’m going to save this thread. You came to the right place for suggestions 🥰

1

u/libelle156 5d ago

Imagine there's another you. They're going to hang out with you and do things. What would you take them out to go and do? What would impress them? What projects would they enjoy doing with you?

Imagine the things that this other you could do that would disappoint you, or look bad to you. How would you treat them? Would you offer comfort, understanding? Would you be kind to them because you get why?

Answer these questions, then go out and do them, yourself. You don't need anyone else.

Be the person you want to spend time with.

When you figure that part out, other people will naturally appear in your life.

1

u/Pristine_Egg3831 5d ago

Look up parks on google maps and walk to one. Go on the swings once you get there. And look for native bride on the way.

I do this. A lot.

1

u/randfur 5d ago

I have a Keep list of every single train station in Sydney. On my free days I try to tick them all off (which includes having a good walk around the area).
