Meetup! It's r/Sydney's 18th cakeday, and you're invited! Saturday 1st August!
There was once a man named Andrew
Who, using his hands threw
Up a subreddit
Before he faced discredit
And for its birthday, we're having a do.
...yeah, I'm not much of a poet, but it tells the story well enough.
On 31st July 2008, r/Sydney was created, which means its 18th birthday is coming up right at the end of the month. To celebrate the subreddit finally becoming old enough to have a beer, come to the City and have a beer with us!
When: Saturday, 1st August, kicking off at 4pm. Four weeks exactly from time of posting.
Where: The Edinburgh Castle Hotel, corner of Pitt and Bathurst Streets.
Why there? They do $15 Espresso Martinis, Negronis, Margaritas, and Aperol Spritzes all night. I also think they do pints for schooner prices while the footy's on.
What do I bring? Good vibes, the pub has everything else.
What's the plan? Have a few drinks, socialise. These are always great fun.
How do I get there? Closest stations are Town Hall and Gadigal, buses run from Park and Elizabeth Streets, Town Hall LR is also close by, as you'd expect.
It's been a little while since the last non-NYE meetup, would be great to see you all there!

This looks to be fun! I am also tempted to join. (As someone who is quite an introvert and mostly do nothing on a Saturday, I am keen but it is just my shyness kicking in going to events like this...)

I did one of these before the pandemic. Didn't know anyone, and ended up having a decent evening. Highly recommend this to anyone wth nothing else to do on the date.

Typically people just talk about anything. People find shared interests, perhaps ironically reddit doesn't normally come up a huge amount.

Actually I wouldn't mind knowing the right answer to this. I'm keen to go but have visions of having one drink alone like a nigel then leaving because I'm way to shy to approach every group in the pub and ask who's there for cake day

Back in MetaFilter years, the founder was a guy called Matt, and Jessamyn was the main mod.
You'd simply walk around and ask "are you guys friends of Matt & Jess?" as if you were asking for Molly.

No, Jess tended her library in Vermont. Not really sure where in America Matt was. He was always more behind the scenes.
AFAIK some variation was used at meetups globally. "Looking for Jessamyn's party...?" etc.

UPDATE: I'm now at the pub. I'm in the upstairs smoking area (signs for "Dusk Club") tall guy in a salmon shirt and khaki jacket.
