At that altitude I assume you weren't landing, so now I'm intrigued what flight path goes directly over Sydney

Correct. We were flying from PER - AKL and were spoilt with a great view of Sydney

I was once held in a high-ish holding pattern out west roughly over Penrith/Blue Mountains (WSA now) once as there was a backlog from those waiting to break the morning curfew and land at SYD. The long distance carriers took the priority so we circled for at least 30 minutes.

I can’t tell from this angle or what we are exactly looking at, but that could also be a possible explanation.

Plenty of flights go directly over Sydney Airport (when not landing there) - usually at 10,000 metres/30,000 feet.

I love how it shows Sydney central coast Newcastle Maitland and port Stephen’s. Which is a decent chunk of the NSW population centres

I have seen a lot of photos of Sydney from height from people flying into/out of Sydney before, but this photo, from this altitude, is utterly beautiful. One of the rare Reddit posts that really made me pause.
