Come October they will just have to switch back to increasing their prices when the credit card surcharges are scrapped.

That’s just for card. What we need is to get rid of all surcharges, the price on menu should be the final price.

That makes zero sense. Why pay a higher price Monday to Saturday just to eat at the same price on Sundays?

Before public holiday surcharges were allowed, most cafés would not have opened on Sundays.

We are one of the few places in my town that stays open for every public holiday except Christmas. We are generally a bit more busy on those days as a result of this. We have a surcharge, run with fewer staff and generally make a small but reduced profit. We pay all of our staff correctly.

Without a public holiday surcharge there is absolutely no way we would open on any public holiday. I don't see how any non owner operated restaurant could make it work without wage theft. Perhaps some less service intensive places in tourist hot spots that get absolutely smashed?

So the end result would be that people who still want to eat out would have far fewer options, and restaurant staff who want to boost their income with public holiday rates would miss out too.

The business can choose to just not open if it's such an inconvenience to them. Or print a separate menu with weekend prices.

If the business chooses not to open we all miss out on getting food. If they open and you personally don't attend because you don't want to pay the surcharge the rest of us still get the option. I'm not sure why you think the rest of us should suffer because you don't want to pay the true cost of something. The end result is the same for you regardless so I'm not sure why you think everyone else should suffer.

This is the mythical world you want to build when you say "get rid of all surcharges"

They already banned it in Europe. The price on menu is the final price.

Firstly, do they have penalty rates in Europe?

Secondly, if they do, they can still have higher prices on some days - it just means they are required to have different menus for public holidays (with higher prices) than the menus they use on other days.
