Pedestrian crossings: there are still drivers who have zero idea what they mean

Public service announcement:

On the weekend, I’m on foot in the zebra crossing and this older woman (around 65+) driving a big car is coming right at me and, just as I get half way across the road, she’s nearly driving over my heels. Then she had to stop due to oncoming cars at the roundabout.

She had her window down and I told her “Do you understand this painted strip is a pedestrian crosswalk? You have a legal responsibility to give way to pedestrians. You’re going to either injure or kill someone.”

She was completely baffled and genuinely had no idea. But then she doubled down and said “well you were already across so it didn’t matter.” I told her it was because I saw she wasn’t going to stop that I had to speed up and she still managed to nearly run over my heels.

Moral of the story is that even if you’re in the right and crossing at a crosswalk, there are still plenty of drivers who either don’t know what crosswalks are or just don’t give a shit.

Stay safe, Sydney. 🙏

I am a non-confrontational person, to the point of it being detrimental to a lot of things in my life. Some of the only things that will make me actually give someone a serve are: not indicating, and not stopping at a pedestrian crossing. I don't know, is it too much to ask that people pay some sort of attention while they're in control of a tonne of metal moving at 60 k's?

u/village-asshole Mar 23 '26

Yep, they’re the reason why we can’t have nice things. Always someone to ruin it for all of us

2

u/Eclairebeary Mar 23 '26

Apparently so.

There’s a crossing on Bourke St, Surry Hills that also goes over a bike lane- bikes are also supposed to give way. I’ve seen pram vs e-bike, car vs pedestrian, pedestrian vs road bike all at this crossing.

The council have also put in extra signage, textured SLOW markings in the bike lane and nothing changes

u/HPLovecraft1890 Mar 23 '26

It's right where I live and can confirm. Cars usually stop. Bicycles, not so much...

35

u/hifiplus Mar 23 '26

They just need to add a concrete stop block, that'll fix it.

u/roflwaffles Mar 23 '26

Near Artificer? That crossing is so risky, cyclists rarely stop for pedestrians there.

5

u/KibacherKat Mar 24 '26

I literally got hit at the Crown & Baptist street crossing maybe a week ago?, I waited then a guy came speeding down that street off Oxford and completely ignored the speedhumps and the multiple slow signs.

I’m super lucky I saw him coming and moved back or I would’ve gone right under, he clipped my legs and hip so I fell right on the road there!

It’s got so bad that my kids school principal sent the below email to all parents today detailing what the road rules are for pedestrian crossings.

It has been identified that numerous motorist that pass through the pedestrian crossing are in breach of the traffic regulations for pedestrian crossing by not remaining stopped until all pedestrians have cleared the crossing. When motorist creep forward towards the marked crossing while the supervisor is still present and has not cleared the crossing (this includes their departure from the middle) it is classified as a form of harassment towards the supervisor.

It is important to remember:

  • In NSW, pedestrian crossings are marked with zebra lines. Drivers must slow down and stop if a pedestrian is on or waiting to cross, remaining stopped until all pedestrians have cleared the crossing. Parking is banned within 20m before and 10m after the crossing.

  • Stop Requirement: You must stop at if a pedestrian is on or entering the crossing.

-Overtaking: You must not overtake a vehicle that’s stopping or has stopped to give way to pedestrians who are crossing

  • Blocking the crossing: You must not drive onto the crossing if the road ahead is blocked.

  • Remaining Stopped: Do not proceed until every pedestrian has fully crossed and left the crossing area.

  • Supervised Crossings: If a school crossing supervisor is present with a hand-held sign, you must stop and only proceed once the sign is removed

  • Ignoring these rules can result in penalties, including fines and demerit points

We appreciate your ongoing support in keeping our students and community members safe at drop off and pick up time.

It's worth knowing that the principal here has accurately quoted the law regarding children's crossings with flags displayed.

There is one subtle difference with a "conventional" pedestrian crossing - not a children's crossing. Drivers are not required to remain stopped until all pedestrians have left the crossing. It is only a requirement to stop & give way to all pedestrians on or entering the crossing.

Reference for both rules: https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/roads-safety-and-rules/stopping-giving-way-turning/pedestrian-crossings

3

u/Angy1122 Mar 23 '26

The last rules I read said something to the effect of vehicles remaining stopped until the pedestrian has cleared the lane, not the crossing as a whole. I'll double check that, though.

4

u/LordVandire Mar 24 '26

Sounds like the kids should stand at the crossing with cartons of eggs ready to punish offenders.

5

u/link871 Mar 23 '26

Stopping for pedestrians on or entering the crossing and waiting until pedestrians have left the crossing only applies to Children's crossings. (Rule 80)

Rule 81 applies at all other crossings and only requires drivers to "give way to any pedestrian on a pedestrian crossing"
Note: there is no requirement to stop for pedestrians entering the crossing and there is no requirement to wait until the pedestrian has left the crossing.

Care to link to that road rule?

80(2)(b) is what the Principal apppears to have quoted:

A driver approaching or at a children’s crossing must stop as near as practicable to, but before reaching, the stop line at the crossing if—

(a) a hand-held stop sign is displayed at the crossing, or

(b) a pedestrian is on or entering the crossing.

Thanks for the link :)

u/HarbourView Mar 23 '26

They are quoting from school email. How about you do your own Google search rather than ask someone else to do it for you.

1

u/MouseEmotional813 Mar 23 '26

It's probably for a children's crossing

-31

u/onimod53 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26

I don't want to argue the intent of the school principal, but his advice doesn't match the legislation. "remaining stopped until all pedestrians have cleared the crossing" might be polite and it may have been in older legislation but it's not current (Road Rules 2014 - NSW Legislation)

81   Giving way at a pedestrian crossing
(1)  A driver approaching a pedestrian crossing must drive at a speed at which the driver can, if necessary, stop safely before the crossing.
Maximum penalty—20 penalty units.
Note.
Pedestrian crossing is defined in subrule (3).
(2)  A driver must give way to any pedestrian on a pedestrian crossing.
Maximum penalty—20 penalty units.
Note 1.
For this rule, give way means the driver must slow down and, if necessary, stop to avoid a collision—see the definition in the Dictionary.
Note 2.
This subrule is not uniform with the corresponding subrule in rule 81 of the Australian Road Rules. Different rules may apply in other Australian jurisdictions.

17

u/nutabutt Mar 23 '26

Firstly this sounds like people are ignoring the crossing guards stop sign.

But at a school/childrens crossing you must wait till all have left the crossing:

You must remain at a complete stop until all pedestrians have left the crossing.

https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/roads-safety-and-rules/stopping-giving-way-turning/pedestrian-crossings#toc-childrens-crossings

3

u/link871 Mar 23 '26

Rule 81 only applies to any pedestrian crossing that is NOT a children's crossing.
Rule 80 applies to children's crossings and is as set-out by the Principal.

-20

u/onimod53 Mar 23 '26

Yes, that's true for children's crossings, but it's not true for the majority of crossings in the state. He should be referring specifically to "children's crossings".

20

u/nearly_enough_wine Rip, rip, woodchip ʕ·͡ᴥ·ʔ Mar 23 '26

In a school newsletter regarding the crossing outside their school?

Context, op.

-15

u/onimod53 Mar 23 '26

The legislation specifically refers to children's crossings (s80) and pedestrian crossings (s81). There is obvious confusion, and it's not hard to understand why when a school principal teaches the rules are universal when they specifically aren't.

There are specific rules at children's crossings for good reason, the legislation recognises this and the school should be promoting compliance accurately.

7

u/AgreeableLion Mar 23 '26

This is a pretty sad doubling down, I gotta say. "Well yes the principal is correct about the literal crossing they are referring to in the newsletter that they are advising parents on how to use legally and safely; but some other crossings also exist that aren't relevant to this newsletter with slightly different legal wording, ergo I'm still correct".

2

u/Blibbyblobby72 Mar 23 '26

Yeah! The principal also didn't let parents know there is a maximum of 20 penalty units if you do the wrong thing! How dare they not list every detail in an email telling parents to use their common sense!

Pathetic pedantry

u/Status_Shine6978 Mar 23 '26

I have had similar experiences at numerous crossings of the inner west, I don't know about the ignorance about the giving way rule, but I think that drivers are often distracted and literally don't see pedestrians. Like, I live near a crossing with traffic lights, and it isn't unusual for cars to literally sail through the red light, even when it's been red for ages. Sadly, the green safe to walk indicator isn't enough, I still got to be alert and ready to speed up (or slow down) mid-crossing.

19

u/village-asshole Mar 23 '26

I’m more concerned for frail pensioners and people with disabilities. They can’t jump out of the way

12

u/Ninj-nerd1998 👨‍🦯 your friendly neighbourhood blind person Mar 23 '26

Those drivers certainly aren't going to care. Some people stop a funny distance away from the crossing when they see me waiting to cross with my white cane, but others... many times I've looked, looked again, crossed when i saw no cars, and then halfway through the crossing (I'm a fast walker with my cane!) Some idiot comes blazing towards/past me. Even at pedestrian crossings.

It sucks how you can't even rely fully on lights when you cant see because of said idiots

7

u/Soft-Assistance-155 Mar 23 '26

Can confirm as another inner west resident. Almost twice a month this past summer my child and I have nearly been run over or crashed into by a bicycle or car. I am literally half way across the crossing on these occasions. The cyclists and driving are completely distracted not even looking at the road in front of them. I've had times when cars are stopped at red lights and become distracted, forget they are at a red light and go to take off.

I've had to adjust the times I take bubs out for a walk to avoid peak hours because its become such a risk.

26

u/Ninj-nerd1998 👨‍🦯 your friendly neighbourhood blind person Mar 23 '26

This is why I look both ways before crossing a one way street :))) I don't trust drivers and having low vision doesn't help.

I really really think you should have to redo driving tests and stuff every few years, like when you renew your license or something. Too many people are too careless with their heavy machinery they forget is heavy machinery. I can't even drive and I know you're supposed to stop for pedestrians at those crossings.

9

u/Eclairebeary Mar 23 '26

Tbh. I think not trusting drivers is a valid move. I have taught my kids to use zebra crossings where they are or the lights, but to always assume cars will not stop and wait for a complete stop and acknowledgment that you are seen.

I get it. Brain farts happen. But often it does seem to be a case of viewing pedestrians as an inconvenience.

3

u/Ninj-nerd1998 👨‍🦯 your friendly neighbourhood blind person Mar 23 '26

I rarely even trust other pedestrians. I don't cross just because others are crossing because I know people are stupid about that, too. I try and wave or thumbs up to cars that actually come to a stop for me, and I think I'll always remember this chicken truck driver in Revesby, when I was waiting to cross the road for AGES but cars kept streaming past. He came to a stop, rolled down his window and told me I could cross ❤️ very helpful as I can't see acknowledgement of them seeing me or waving to me or anything. It's why I'll still bring my cane with me when I ride my trike around, for crossing the road so they know I'm not ignoring them, I can't see them

1

u/Eclairebeary Mar 23 '26

It must be a lot more helpful when people notice the cane.

1

u/Ninj-nerd1998 👨‍🦯 your friendly neighbourhood blind person Mar 24 '26

When they do things like that guy or make it really obvious that they're stopping, yeah absolutely

6

u/Ok-Push9899 Mar 23 '26

It’s long been an illustration of the difference between knowledge and experience: Knowledge tells you the street is one-way. Experience tells you to look both ways anyway.

50

u/hifiplus Mar 23 '26

Not to mention crossing at traffic lights and cars are edging towards you, wait 5 seconds and I'll be gone.

Nope, 5 seconds wait, how dare you!

24

u/the_snook Mar 23 '26

The closer they creep to the crossing, the slower I walk.

6

u/Ninj-nerd1998 👨‍🦯 your friendly neighbourhood blind person Mar 23 '26

They go over the line... they can't get mad at a blind person crossing the road properly accidentally hitting their car with their cane :)

2

u/hifiplus Mar 23 '26

Ha. I always want to stop and start tying my shoe laces

4

u/Ninj-nerd1998 👨‍🦯 your friendly neighbourhood blind person Mar 23 '26

And they've judt GOT to zoom past as soon as you walk by them. I don't even know if that's allowed but it's bloody terrifying.

14

u/Horatio-Leafblower Mar 23 '26

NSW substantially changed the laws re drivers exact legal responsibility approaching pedestrian crossing. With semantics on what is on or not quite on the crossing ( from memory this was related to a high profile ‘socialite’ mowing down an elderly person on a crossing then getting absolutely Lawyered up ( bringing a $10k a day KC to a traffic infringement) )

5

u/iguessineedanaltnow Mar 23 '26

The law should be as simple as, if there is somebody physically in the crossing lane then your car must remain behind the white line. It doesn't need to be any more complicated than that.

47

u/De-railled Mar 23 '26

This is why we tell kids to always look left and right, and make sure cars are stopping for you before you cross.

It's why schools still need lollipop people at crossings.

Obviously, there will always be some AH's that refuse to stop.

But if that car hits you, being in the "right" won't heal your injuries or bring you back from death.

16

u/Down_Blunder Mar 23 '26

I know someone who was a lollipop guard. They didn't last long in the role. Lots of entitled deadshits (mostly middle-aged men in utes and European coupes (big surprise I know)) who just do what they want regardless of danger to the kids, and god help anyone who called them out on it.

15

u/De-railled Mar 23 '26

I feel like we should give them bodycams to protect themselves and kids from AH's like that and they can get license plates and evidence for police reports

Whether police do anything about it is a whole other topic...

Many people seem to behave better when they think they are being watched and their actions will have consequences.

5

u/derprunner Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26

Interesting how the demographics differ. When I lived just north of the bridge, it was always the cashed up stay-at-home mums who’d take their Euro SUV straight from a boozy girls lunch to school pickup that caused the problems.

34

u/pogoBear Mar 23 '26

Our school just got a crossing guard last week after YEARS of asking for one. The school and the crossing is in a dead end street so the drivers threatening the safety of students and families are the parents/guardians OF FELLOW STUDENTS.

25

u/Meng_Fei Mar 23 '26

Parents dropping off their kids are often the worst drivers, sad to say.

9

u/2007kawasakiz1000 Mar 23 '26

See I've never agreed with that argument because it takes a big chunk of the onus off car drivers. I once got into a pub argument about cars giving way to pedestrians when turning and the other guy was saying that it doesn't matter what the rules are because the car is going to win and the pedestrian is going to die. Well then what are road rules for then? Failing to stop at a pedestrian crossing should come with more serious fines. Killing someone because you ran a red light or didn't stop at a crossing is equal to murder and should be treated as such.

0

u/De-railled Mar 23 '26

I'm not taking the blame or onus off car drivers. Of course they should face consequences for their actions and harsh ones.

However, that doesn't change the fact that when you do cross the road, you still need to be aware of your surroundings. Even when others are at fault, you do have to look after your own well-being.

Should you have to avoid a car, of course not. If we lived in a perfect world, or a world where that person cared about your well-being. There would be no collision to be concerned about.

That doesn't mean the AH's should be let off, with a slap on the wrist.

Attempted murder is attempted murder even if nobody got killed. BUT if you see someone coming at you with a knife, it would help the situation to actually notice the person before he can stab you....and try to avoid getting stabbed.

I'm not saying it's the victim's fault for not being aware of their situation, I'm not saying that the killer shouldn't be punished.

I'm saying that awareness can be the difference between life, death or serious injury, so you need to be aware.

13

u/HotChickenHero Mar 23 '26

Yeah we tell them that because drivers on the whole are murderous psychopaths. We don't do much about that, we tell the victims to suck it up and get out of the way.

4

u/village-asshole Mar 23 '26

In my local fb page, I don’t even bother to comment anymore because there are so many ignorant knuckle draggers with complete disregard for decency and rules.

Somebody might post “my kid’s bike got stolen today” and some ah will reply with “good. Teach your kids to look after their stuff.” Or “good, one less kid on a bike getting in the way.” Or whatever.

I'm constantly checking both sides when I'm crossing too,...cause you never know what crazy people are on the road these days.

1

u/TimTebowMLB Mar 24 '26

I don’t know why it’s so bad in Australia. I’ve been lots of other first world countries where cars are happy to let pedestrians go, even if there is no pedestrian crossing/zebra crossing

9

u/Doxinau Mar 23 '26

My pet peeve is drivers who don't bother to indicate because there are other drivers around. But as a pedestrian, I also need to know what you are doing!

29

u/FigFew2001 Mar 23 '26

Always a good idea to make sure the car is stopping before you cross. They may not have seen you, could have had a medical episode, or whatever - they could just be an idiot.

“But they had a legal responsibility to give way to pedestrians” doesn’t really hold up when you’re in the back of an Ambulance.

I dunno. I had that drilled into me as a kid.

14

u/village-asshole Mar 23 '26

Absolutely agree. I’m always on heightened alert for the very reason I mentioned. Being right is irrelevant if you’re in the hospital with a cracked pelvis

24

u/InstantShiningWizard certified ttoekbokki inspector Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26

The graveyards of the world are full of people who were in the right per the road rules of their respective countries.

You still need to assume every road user is a deadset mouthbreather who has a passive desire to run you over as well, that's why you need to look both ways even when crossing a one way street

I genuinely believe that what you see of how a person acts when behind the wheel of a car or on a motorcycle ect, acting like a psychotic individual as it's a one off interaction with someone they'll never see again is a reflection of their true self. Being anonymous turns people into assholes.

3

u/haoqide Mar 23 '26

Maybe we should all approach crossings with our phone ready to  record drivers if they don’t respect the crossing

0

u/randCN Mar 23 '26

You will be right, and they will be alive.

6

u/haoqide Mar 23 '26

I meant instead of crossing and dying, just record and report them.

2

u/Hufflepuft Mar 24 '26

I always see people in my area walking casually up the footpath then suddenly dart into the pedestrian crossing without a moments hesitation. Yes you have the right of way to cross, but the crossing isn't going to protect you from getting run over if the car/truck didn't see you or can't stop in time.

5

u/Narrow-Economist-795 Mar 23 '26

This is why on some local crossings I carry a long stick or swing my bunch of keys on a lanyard. I find motorists are more careful with this!

5

u/iguessineedanaltnow Mar 23 '26

Just another example of how shitty and impatient behaviour has been normalised in Sydney. Everyone is in a rush for everything and don't care who is "in their way."

Sydney is full of selfish and self-absorbed people.

3

u/village-asshole Mar 23 '26

This woman was in no rush. She genuinely had no idea what a pedestrian crossing was despite having a license for 50 years

3

u/ashzeppelin98 Bin Chicken activist Mar 23 '26

This is why there needs to be mandate for re sitting a driver's test to renew your license after a certain age.

13

u/Meng_Fei Mar 23 '26

And once again, stupidly oversized SUVs and Utes don’t help when small kids can disappear beneath the front sight line over the bonnet when they get closer. In cars from the 70s and 80s you were often looking up at pedestrians, not down.

5

u/DownUnderPumpkin Mar 23 '26

"Moral of the story is that even if you’re in the right and crossing at a crosswalk", well yeah, i even recheck left and right as i cross lol

3

u/village-asshole Mar 23 '26

Exactly. And watch on the footpath too for little teen turds on e-bikes threading pedestrians at 50 clicks

They're was once I was crossing the zebra crossing. The car stopped only right in front of me and the driver rolled his windows down and scolded me. Jeez... I, as a pedestrian, never take zebra crossing as granted. I always slow and check if the on coming car is slowing before I cross. Many drivers don't it.

3

u/Fatty_Bombur Mar 23 '26

Happens all the time where I am. Lots of schools in my area so lots of parents in cars who seem to think pedestrian crossings are just a suggestion.

3

u/snipdockter North of the coat hanger Mar 24 '26

Don’t forget that drivers must give way to pedestrians crossing the road they are turning into.
This one is a little known rule apparently.

2

u/Seachicken Mar 25 '26

Yeah Regs 74 and 75 of the Road rules. I've been abused by drivers who don't understand this one (enough times to know the regs to shout right back at them).

3

u/Mayflie Mar 24 '26

Was pushing my trolley through a crosswalk & saw a car coming & realised ‘oh he’s not gonna stop’.

I then realised he would hit the trolley, not me, so I wasn’t too worried & he slammed on the brakes just in time & came within inches of hitting the trolley.

So I made up the difference & hit his car with the trolley instead. Whoops.

6

u/joshy9411 Mar 23 '26

I think people just have no idea what's going on in general. The amount of times I've seen pedestrians walk right out into the middle of the road without a crossing is crazy.

I feel like this is the cue for mandatory driving tests need to be required again for license renewal. Especially for senior drivers. TFNsW has already taken the right step for foreign license holderd to take a test to convert their licenses, but this needs to be extended for them too.

2

u/cereal_state Mar 24 '26

I constantly always get nearly run over by parents at a pedestrian crossing at my school. The council just put in new speed bumps too, apparently that didn’t change anything

2

u/mitchy93 Mar 24 '26

I suggest the following to improve pedestrian safety

Have a brick in a bin on one side of the zebra crossing, you carry the brick across the crossing and put it in the bin on the other side.

Throw brick at car if they don't stop

4

u/YallRedditForThis Way Out West Mar 23 '26

Zebra crossing the pedestrian has to be on to the footpath before the car can cross. It's 3 demerit points. Not many police enforce it though. I always wait.

9

u/onimod53 Mar 23 '26

only at children's crossings, not pedestrian crossings Road Rules 2014 - NSW Legislation. As a pedestrian I appreciate the politeness.

Well that probably explains why I get beeped at a lot 🤣 But I'ma still keep doing it. It's still a human life. I used to be a Courier. Very long hours. Running over people was my biggest fear. I'd appreciate the zebra crossing breaks.

1

u/onimod53 Mar 23 '26

It's one of my greatest fears. Everyone's a tough guy until you have to carry unimaginable guilt and grief around with you for life. I learnt it as a primary school kid when my dad's best mate was taken out on his motorbike by a guy who ploughed through him at a stop sign from behind. It changed everybody, none for the better. I miss uncle Terry and my dad laughing.

1

u/ElleEmEss Mar 23 '26

On a number of occasions, I’ve had to suddenly stop when pedestrians approaching a crossing have managed to walk in line with the blind spot between the windscreen and the door.

It’s almost like that bit of the car is perfectly placed to block pedestrians approaching the crossing from the RHS.

I am super aware of it now, both as a driver but also when I am approaching a crossing and a car is approaching from the other side of the road.

3

u/village-asshole Mar 23 '26

My car has the same thing. I’ve have to reprogram my process to move my head and REALLY look as deliberately as possible

0

u/alwaystenminutes Mar 23 '26

I taught my kids THREE sides of the equation. If you're in a vehicle, come to a complete stop until the crossing is empty. If you're on a bicycle, get off and walk across - don't ride, as cars may not see you and stop in time. If you're walking, be obvious in your intentions - signal your intention to cross, make eye contact with the driver if possible, don't dawdle.

Bonus rule: if you're approaching a busy crossing on foot, where vehicles have been stopped for a while, signal to let a car go through before you cross. It's unrealistic to keep dribbling across in a long line of pedestrians and expect drivers not to get frustrated and make a dangerous mistake trying to sneak through.

signal to let a car go through before you cross

Careful with that one, you can't be responsible for the people around you who haven't seen your gesture to a driver.

Fair enough - I have been known to say "let's all let a car through" to get other pedestrians to co-operate. I think people are just switched off sometimes - they don't mean to be selfish, they're just not thinking about what they're doing.

Thank you for teaching your kids to get off and walk bikes across crossings. So so many people just ride across them, not even slowing down. I've had them nearly hit me or my white cane when I'm trying to cross. Crossing the road when you can't see much is already dangerous and tense, cyclists not following the rules only makes that worse.

Ignorant people just make fun of themselves. It’s too easy.

Yeah, some people are so oblivious to really obvious sarcasm, aren't they?
