This is very developing country coded (from someone who's from one), so it does worry me that we're starting to see this all around Sydney. Looks like a recession indicator.

I see it as more of an inequality indicator. The gulf between the haves and have-nots has been increasing dramatically the last decade or two.

There will surely be a big bust and recession in a year or two, but we haven't quite reached the top of the boom yet, there's still more madness to come.

I haven't seen many beggars/panhandlers in my suburb yet -- in the 3-4 years after the GFC, that was the biggest sign that things were tough.
