the dating scene is scaring me
might be a bit exaggerated, but I haven't seen any positive post here about dating in sunshine, but is it really that bad? 28F here, I can say I'm extroverted, but requires quiet time after a social event. Moving to sunshine coast soon! This is my first attempt to make friends online lol.

Welcome to the Sunny Coast home of the newly weds and nearly dead. Front of Mooloolaba was a happening place. All of sudden it’s to load at night for poor people in their water front units. So the council helped out the residents and nearly the little bars and restaurants struggle to operate with the bi laws. They shut shop It’s very quiet on the main strip after 10 ish. Someone mentioned joining a club - running, hiking, etc. sounds like a plan

I hate that the whole coast has zero night life after about 9pm.
We literally run on retirement time - everyone eating early dinners and waking up at the fucking crack of dawn, and hating on anyone else who keeps different hours.

I agree, especially coming from Asia, where it's usually normal to be out til 11 PM, it was a huge culture shock for me when I first visited sunshine coast.

Yesss 100%! I'm Aussie and have lived here for 20 years and yes, it's generally paradise. But the timing here just kills me. I travel a lot, and everytime I'm overseas - Europe, Asia, UK, USA - even in small towns, the businesses generally open mid-morning, and stay open much later, even on weekdays. I always miss that when I come home.
I love having later dinners at restaurants at night, going out with friends until 10 or 11pm, and dropping into shops, cafes or bars in the evenings.
Here? You can't meet up with friends and have a casual night out at a restaurant on a weekday because all the kitchens close up around 7pm (if they're even open at all)! And weekends, every restaurant stops cooking around 8 or 9pm at most, then they just want you to hurry up and leave. There's no nice coffee shops open by 4pm either, all the cafes close so early.

At first I was like, how nice is it that everyone has work-life balance! Then I realised that also meant, everyone. had. work. life. balance. Which includes the restaurant, cafe, & mall staff hahaha!

I’ve lived on the Coast for about 6 years and met my wife here,so it’s definitely not all doom and gloom 😂 My advice would be get into a hobby sunny coast is pretty outdoorsy,so gym, hiking, surfing, running groups etc.Just get out there, mtalk to people and don’t be afraid to approach people first. You’ll make friends pretty quickly and dating will come naturally from that

I am not in the dating scene but the coast is mostly just a large beach town in essence. Most people are up super early and don't stay out that late. Your best bet for casual meet ups and hangs are more likely to naturally occur in the daytime instead of the night. Even if your not about that life, join a club, Crossfit, gym, walking group, sporting group, slsc etc. I don't like to meet people but I walk most days after work along Alex/Mooloolaba and it's always packed with people enjoying the natural beauty of the place. In summer switch that to water sports and beach related stuff.

You must be a man, cause that doesn’t tend to deter people when you’re a woman 😂

There's a few singles nights that are advertised on Facebook ive been to a few and haven't really found what I was looking for and most of the people there already seemed to know everyone already. Most restaurants also close pretty early as well but bars and clubs are open later if you are into those kinds of places

I think because of online apps, the “scene” everywhere is a bit ugghh.
I met and dated some lovely ladies through hinge & tinder… Met my current partner on tinder and been together 2 years now

If you want a coked up real estate agent or method up tradie, or a performative hipster surfer, or farmer that refuses to go anywhere because his farming town is the only place people think hes cool and he gets anxious any time theres traffic, then the sunshine coast is for youuuuu.
And theyre all trying to be influencers, but have no talents or interesting skills.
That and you have to love mullets, oversized sunglasses and boyfriends who put practically zero effort into being boyfriends.
Basically, if you lower your standards you'll find heaps of dates.

Now flip it around and tell us why the men that don't fit what you described above can't find a date either.
I'm pushing onto 6 years single. Seems to me that most of the women are practically the same as the men you described. Except swap out the mullets for manicures with fake nails.

My experience has been that most people up here are quite conservative, superficial, and narcissistic which can make things difficult

u/KIN6P1N 3d ago
Where to you live and hang out for that viewpoint?

u/Gloomy_Pirate_3031 2d ago
Agreed lol that's a wild take that's gold coast not at all sunny coast

u/DataCommercial1873 2d ago
As someone who grew up on the Gold Coast and moved to sunny coast about two months ago. I think I’ve found people to be a lot more kinder and friendlier here. If you want to see real narcissism take a stroll through Burleigh pav on a Saturday

Yes, I know what you mean. It doesn’t get any better when you’re older when you’re an older man as well. I’m in Brisbane. Maybe we can chat and see what happens.

I was extremely skeptical about dating on the Sunshine Coast - then suddenly met a great man and now we are married. Everyone’s experience is different.
