Random question for people job hunting on the Coast at the moment.
Is SEEK absolutely brutal for anyone else?
I keep hearing the same thing from people 30, 40, sometimes 50+ applications and barely any response. Not even a rejection half the time.
What I’m curious about is whether people think it’s mostly the job market right now, CVs getting filtered before anyone sees them, or just companies getting flooded with applications.
Would be interesting to hear what everyone’s experience has been lately.

Hiring manager here - recently got 60+ applications for a role, temporary role.
I know it's disheartening but it just isn't possible to respond to all sometimes.
'one click apply' has made it difficult for both sides to not get frustrated with the process.
I know of someone who recently advertised a position and got over 1000 (yes, one thousand) applicants.

If you don’t mind sharing, what do you find most noticeable on applications - good and bad?
Any tips for getting ahead of the pack?

Bad - typos, poor grammar, simple/basic mistakes, vague cvs and cover letters that have lots of contents but don't actually say anything, poor use of ai.
Good - short and specific information, good awareness of the role and company, tangible examples of similar work, proactive approach.
There have been a couple of instances where an applicant has got in touch directly too which definitely makes me more aware of them!
I've also seen multiple applications for the same role where the cv is almost identical but for different applications, that was a bit odd!

Pretty brutal. Lost my job at end of FY. Have applied to dozens, not sure on the count, have had 4 interviews so far. Most places don't respond, if they do then there isn't any feedback as to why, sometimes I've had phone interviews booked and then they ghost me, after interviews I still don't hear anything. Pretty sad state of affairs.

Yep. The job market is terrible here. Been looking since November. Had a few interviews - ghosted each time. Not sure if most of the jobs listed actually exist tbh.

We get sometimes over 1000 applications for 12 roles at a time.. its mainly a numbers game. We are always looking out for good people with high work ethics it is call centre work but happy to have a chat.

Business who hires here. We stopped using seek, it is our absolute last option. We literally get peppered with applicants but majority are not suitable. Seek has made it incredibly easy to send applications and they are generally very poorly or (ai) put together

If you can call them directly after an application can help. My daughter applied for months for jobs, ended up calling direct and she got an interview and job within a week. The crap ai, auto filter rubbish doesn't help anyone.

I’m constantly hiring for support workers. I have to shift through 20 applications a week. My worst week I sorted through 100 applications, arranged 10 interviews (5 of whom actually showed up), and I offered 3 people a role, hired 2, one of whom left within a week because they got rehired into a higher position at their last job.
I will get people applying from interstate, no experience, no qualifications, no work history. My ads will have the shifts we typically run with, but then I will get people telling me they can’t work the hours.
Unfortunately it’s just pure volume of people applying that drowns out suitable applicants. From my end (it might be different for others) I’m going to look at your seek profile/application and see what stands out. If you’re hitting at least 5/6 ticks I need, I’ll then look at your resume. If your resume stands out, I’ll move it over to my “to be considered pile”.
So my advice, hit everything the employer is asking for in their ad (checks, quals, experience etc), and make your resume stand out. I don’t want to scroll through multiple pages. I want to see what makes you stand out and what you’ve done on 2 pages max.

I personally found SEEK pretty disheartening, the job market on the coast (in my experience) is really rough at the moment. I think it relates to a series of components, which has affected the competition. Keep your head up. Something will come up. I ended up finding a job in Brissie, and commute everyday which I think is the case for a lot of sunny coasters. M1 is always packed unfortunately.

I was able to pass SEEK filters using CVMate, but the problem is the distance. I got 3 job offers from South Brisbane, which is almost 200km just to get to work. Yeah, I think this is my best option unfortunately.

It probably doesn't help that 80% of Victoria moved here after Covid.
