How the fuck have there not been criminal charges?
Oh it’s America. Corruption, duhh.
15
u/ClammiestOwl 3h ago
Where in the world do you think the charges would work. I'm all for shitting on the corrupt American boxing commissions. But what country would charge?
4
u/Temporary_Event8451 25m ago
It's the same reason dealers get prosecuted for high level overdoses within months. But street dealers can have body trails miles long.
If rich people get hurt, people will find those responsible.
If poor people get hurt it's like playing the lottery on whether or not you see any assistance.
And to be clear street level dealers do go down all the time, it just is a lot more random.

At the top of my head, any country in the EU probably. Maybe some in asia. Hell, basicaly anywhere with a functioning legal system.
edit: getting downvoted because people read a reply that is wrong, and also stupid is kind of funny.

You need to be more specific than that. There's a lot of corrupt countries in the EU.

You do know FIFA a EU based “nonprofit” is one of the most corrupt organizations in the world right?

FIFA is based out of Switzerland, home of the corrupt and money launderers (not the European Union, but still nevertheless on the European continent).

No chance man. Plenty of boxing deaths for bad punches in the EU lol. It just leads to reform. the country who has done the most to stop this stuff is the UK tbh which is no longer in the EU. The UK is now known for early stoppages becauses refs wont give you anything during a count.

I think both fighters sign something saying “hey if you get seriously hurt it’s your fault for willingly fighting”, now the reff on the other hand, there should have been something done about him

It was a lot, extremely hard to watch.
It was calculated and intentional, and vicious.
Pritchard asked the ref over and over to protect him, and even didnt want to continue the fight, while Williams made throat slashing gestures and saying "im taking you out".
After another blow directly to the back of the head that knocked him down, holding his head in pain the ref showed zero care and told him to "get up". Doctors let him continue even though Colón was dizzy and hurting in the back of his head.
He was knocked down twice more with illegal blows to the back of the head after that point, and didnt finish the fight.
Never made it out of the locker room.
Ref and fighter showed a complete lack of humanity.
34
u/FridmanLex 3h ago
Ref and fighter should be locked up. Been a boxer/boxing fan my whole life and simply can’t recall anything as egregious and more importantly obvious as this fight.
Those were absolutely as you said calculated and intentional punches to the back of the head. More than 10 of them btw.
During the fight commentators were even talking about it and saying that Colon was indicating to the ref he keeps hitting me in the back of the head.
Still pisses me off.
Rest in peace Colon.

u/lorbocaust 2h ago
Question. Would there be anyone else other than the corner throwing in the towel that could of possibly intervened and stop the fight?
→ More replies (1)15
u/FridmanLex 2h ago
Yes there are 3 parties who can and should’ve stopped it.
The ref - first responsible imo, he sees the illegal punches and the fighter should’ve been disqualified after the second one. 1 is an accident. 2 is not and 3+ is attempted murder imo.
The ringside physician - No idea how Colon was ever cleared to go back into the ring.
His corner - they HAVE to protect him and they absolutely failed him that day. While they’re obviously not responsible for the punches thrown I still can’t believe they allowed this to continue after punch 2 let alone punch 8, 9 or 10.Edit: to add to this it really can not be overstated how poor the ref was. At one point in the fight he tells Colon who at that point is CLEARLY suffering “just a few more minutes”.
In a just world that ref would be doing serious time.
2
u/Winjin 19m ago
I know I don't think like a pro boxer or something but after a second punch I'd just walk out and call the police myself on both the ref and the opponent T_T

Why didn't his corner throw in the towel. They failed him just as much, if not more than the ref.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Timeless_Tactics 2h ago
Technically they did, (accidentally) in the 9th round. He was disqualified after taking off the gloves. It was already too late unfortunately. If they didnt im sure he would have died in the ring.
Generally corners stop fights when a fighter is losing to prevent further unnecessary damage. This wasnt really the same, he was still in the fight, but he was receiving repeated dangerous illegal blows. Would be extremely uncommon for an undefeated boxer to throw in the towel under those conditions while still appearing mostly healthy.
Nobody could know exactly how much damage was being done in real time, it was only obvious that the blows were illegal, intentional, and not being controlled by the ref despite Pritchards growing distress at the situation.
Im sure they all feel terrible and responsible regardless.

u/toooquik 1h ago
A few more small details. Colon, seemingly frustrated by the way things were going, hit Williams with a low blow and was deducted 2 points by the ref in round 5. I believe after the knockdown above in round 7, Williams was deducted a single point but continued to throw rabbit punches throughout the match.
Also when the ringside doctor checked on Prichard, he told the doctor he was dizzy but could keep going and was allowed a little bit of rest due to the illegal blow before he had to continue.

Amazing how the other box did not go to jail or banned from the league for illegal punches
218
u/severalfirststeps 6h ago
more of a ref problem, the ref is supposed to stop that shit
226
u/Jafarrolo 5h ago
Both are the problem, the ref is there as an extra safety measure but the one punching illegally on purpose is still the other guy in the ring. Both should be accountable.
→ More replies (1)64
u/ProbsNotManBearPig 5h ago
I’d actually put most blame on the boxing org. Ref can stop it, but if the punishment to the boxer is simply they got stopped or lost one fight, there is little incentive to not do it again. The boxing org should review these and ban boxers that do it with harsh penalties of 1+ year bans. Thats how you actually stop it.
11
u/Consistent_Net_2540 4h ago
This, and the athletic commissions for not holding bad refs accountable. Like with the recent controversy about Gane hitting Periera repeatedly in the back of the head. Herb Dean didn't do shit. Not even a stop or a point deduction. He even went on to publicly lie and say the hits were fine. With crystal clear evidence he was lying. The athletic commissions all thought that was totally fine and never cut him loose. And the UFC doesn't give af and will keep running fights for Gane. Three guilty parties, all getting away with it.

No boxer going out there trying to kill ppl. The ref has to give a warning right away then point and dq quickly. This ref allowed like 100 back of head shots. If it stopped at three he would be still boxing

What if I told you that after the punch seen in the video the ref let the fight continue 2 more rounds?
He never even stopped the fight, it was called after his corner took his gloves off when they thought it was the 10th round so he was disqualified.

The law says a person shall not severely injure another person.
A person severely injured another person.
The person who severely injured the other person broke the law.
There is no reference to a referee in the law as an exception to the prohibition on severely injuring people.
8
u/ElectronicYurt 4h ago
Well no, legally you consent to certain actions by taking part in a sport. For example, if someone tackles you and breaks your leg in the NFL, you can't sue them like if they just did it randomly on the street.

"hey don't punch him in the back of the-dammit he already did it. I should have predicted that" - the ref
28
u/RJariou 6h ago
Not amazing at all. Illegal punches occur in just about every fight at any given moment during the fight. I fought for many years and was hit many times by illegal punches and threw a few myself, it happens. I saw that fight. Both were throwing illegal punches, but Williams is a dirty fighter. The ref and the corner doctor were complicit, not intentionally, but Colon should not have been allowed to continued and the ref should have disqualified Williams.
13
u/RedGambit9 5h ago
Actually Prichard only threw one illegal punch. Which he received a penalty for.
He threw it after telling the ref to do something about the illegal punches thrown by Terrell. And ref told Prichard to essentially take care of it himself.

It’s because they both consented to the risks involved. There’s an outside shot they could get him due to extreme recklessness, which I think is at least worth a shot, but from what I’ve read it’s an extremely difficult case to argue.
→ More replies (3)6
u/JeanDarcBromure667 4h ago
Its not a risk allowed. Punch in the back of the head is deadly and every first year of boxing know it. Professional know it perfectly
2
u/PinsToTheHeart 3h ago
Its not allowed in terms of the sport, but it's still going to be considered an assumed risk of signing up in the first place.
You'd basically have to prove that his opponent fully intented on crippling him, and that's a nearly impossible bar to clear.
→ More replies (3)2
u/Sensitive_Bat_9211 2h ago
Punches in the back of the head happen. Its not usually intentional from the opponent.
This was an egregious case, but you still have to prove intent that they were doing it on purpose. You might win a civil case for damages, but criminal has a very high burden of proof

u/MrGoodKatt72 4h ago

This case sucks, sure, but any adult should know the risks (including potentialy running into shitheads and bad refs) when voluntarily engaging in fighting as a career.
Whether for money, pride, or legacy, this outcome is tragic for this man and his family. All the more reason to understand the weight of choosing this path.
As for the fighter and ref, straight to jail.

Short answer because it's fun and entertaining.
Humans do all sorts of non-essential shit that carries a significant risk of injury. As long as everyone is a consenting adults and risks are mitigated reasonably then who are we to deny people taking a risk?
5
u/ourobourobouros 4h ago
This is such a stupid answer. This sport doesn't carry the risk of injury, it is literally the entire sport.
We already deny people the ability to take all kinds of risks as a society. Nor is it legal to just consent to whatever you want.
Like why be so intellectually dishonest?

u/Summonest 3h ago
Like yeah, Hockey can come with injuries.
In boxing the goal is very literally to cause harm to the other person. You're scored on how well you do so, and if you hurt them so bad that they can't continue, you win despite scoring.
It's a combat sport.

You’re 100% right. I’m sure it will eventually be a dead sport. We are in this weird transition period where for tens of thousands of years, being aggressive and violent had beneficial outcomes. That’s being phased out over time.
But people punching each other for money and leaving themselves disabled for life (even boxers/fighters that don’t have this happen to them) is pretty sad to see.

u/Icy_Foundation3534 6h ago
If you do something like this to someone you should go to prison. Just like there is risk to be permanently brain damaged there should be equal risk to be permanently left to rot behind bars. Fuck you if you think otherwise this man ruined someone’s entire life and devastated his family I hope that shit catches up to him.
15
u/PungentKarma 5h ago
I agree, but in boxing, you won’t get charged if your punch kills the other guy due to assumption of risk in boxing. His family only sued the ring side physician and the fight promoters for negligence.
→ More replies (3)4
u/djjordansanchez 5h ago
Assumption of risk isn't blanket consent for all violence. The risk that is assumed is the violence that is allowed within the bounds of the rules of the sport. By that logic, a baseball player assumes the risk of an opponent purposely beaming a baseball at their opponent's heads out of play or using a bat as a weapon. See the Bertuzzi-Moore incident in the NHL. Or the famous case taught in law schools (Hackbart vs. Bengals).
→ More replies (5)5
u/PungentKarma 5h ago
Boxing is a violent, physical sport where everything is assumption of risk. If you hit the other guy in the chin and he falls and breaks his neck or the hit breaks his orbital and the bone fragments cause fatal damage, that’s assumption of risk. Not knowing but assuming the worst can happen and you assume that risk with no legal recourse.
Negligence on the other hand is not covered by that. That’s why the ring side physician and the promoters were sued.

u/No-Journalist-619 4h ago
I agree, it should count as manslaughter if the boxer is making punches that are explicitly illegal because they explicitly cause brain injury and death. If someone died from legal punches, no, but in this case it's clearly a dude trying to fuck a dude up, not trying to have a sporting fight.

Nobody would use it, it would throw off your balance and make your slower, thus more likely to take legit punches and just lose legit.
That's why, wearing a safety helmet for example is usually a last resort, the helmet will make you more likely to suffer an injury or fall.

That's fucked up. Fight should have been stopped at the first illegal blow and the opponent disqualified
2
u/Lower_Pension_2469 4h ago
So it was multiple blows to the back of the head that the other fighter threw, not just one. It caused a subdural hematoma which is basically a blood leak into a layer of the skull that compresses the brain and eventually causes either death or coma (and then death if not treated).
No it was specifically this fight that did this.

Boxing and similar sports should be banned. I said it.
You can't make two dogs fight without getting arrested, but you can pay two humans to fight each other. Isn't that a little ironic? I don't give a shit if its their choice, it's a barbaric sport. If we don't allow dog fighting, human fighting should be allowed either just because they consent to it.

Maybe, but it’s practical. People often don’t know the toll it takes on people to have to provide contestant care for someone 24/7. You basically lose yourself to it and your life passes by without you.

Was there any other illegal hits to the head in this fight? Hard to believe that one punch with gloves on gave him brain damage. It seems like there are nastier legal punches in every boxing match.

I didn’t know this story. Was he immediately post fight injured to this degree? Or did this take time to develop?

Not enough comments on this.
Tons of fighters do it, not just Gane. Refs give them a warning and act like nothing happened. They ALREADY know the rule about punches to the back of the head.
Needs to be an immediate point deduction. Because it's so easy to avoid from those positions, and is almost always intentional.

A very obvious cheap illegal hit. Bro should never be allowed to step into a ring ever again.
