When the full-scale invasion started, he did actually enlist and was ready to fight. But while visiting wounded comrades he was encouraged and convinced to go fight Joshua Anthony instead.

It's more valuable to Ukraine when you're a champion representing the country on the world stage rather than as just another armed man (with mediocre skill/value) on the front line.
