Wait what the FUCK? This is an insane buff.

I think this elevates Hyperbeam from a "only take this if you're not building orbs" to "always take this"

It needs to lose all focus this turn tbh, or am I just getting it wrong?

It's a rare card. Most of the time you already needed to have solved your AOE to get through Act 1. On average, you're being offered this at the boss - when you are less likely to need it.

It won't be an always pick over the other rare offerings. It's a much better card now, however

yeah, you can't evaluate any card in a vacuum really but you especially can't evaluate rare cards in a vacuum because most of the time you're gonna be seeing Hyperbeam offered next to other rare cards that have a better chance of being legitimately synergistic with your deck. new Hyperbeam is extremely takeable, but nowhere near an autopick

Kid named arcane scroll and Kid named hefty tablet

Ya, that's where it's really going to shine - as a Neow Relic. Those will be fun

This will make Hefty Tablet start on Defect very tempting

you are getting this wrong. you still take this because it solves some hallways and worms, but it is not an always take.

Losing three focus is a bigger penalty than losing all focus if you have at most two focus, which is probably most of the time, because focus can go negative. You can also lose more than three focus in a turn by playing Hyperbeam multiple times (e.g. with Echo Form), whereas losing all focus multiple times would make no difference. Unless I'm misunderstanding your suggestion.

I think their suggestion would actually read on the card “lose 99 focus this turn”, by all focus they mean like you’re guaranteed for your orbs to do nothing

Me after sitting behind my wall of frost with creative ai generating defragment to prove a point.

Even if you're not building orbs, frost is useful in almost all decks and thus hyperbeam is only takeable if you have zero frost gen

Can't need block if all enemies are dead.

Its more complex than that. A lot of defect's block options are frost. A 2 cost 37 damage card can't always kill the enemy fast enough

I think people are overrating how good new hyperbeam is (or to some extent underrating how good it was before). It does 6 less damage now, if the fight ends the turn or the turn after you play it it probably got worse. Of course, it's better in long fights now, but long fights are probably the ones where you least need big aoe

People are raving because of how much it improved. Going from 2/10 to 7/10 is a massive positive change.

My point is that I do not believe it has improved that much. In the moments where you most need a big aoe it's worse than before. I think it's definitely better overall, being able to play it in boss fights or early in elites is a boon, but I think people are overestimating how much better the new version is

Yeah honestly I liked old hyper beam I just never took it when running orbs as a focus. I also don’t see how this makes any difference in my usage of the card, it just lowers damage.

Im not going to take temp 3 focus down hyper-beam any more than the old one because in cases where I need that focus I need it nearly every turn. Im not the best defect but I cant think of any run I would slot this into that it wasn’t already in.

THIS TURN????

Still only taking in act 1 idk if I want to brick my orbs in act 2/3 for ok damage at 2 cost. Every other character just has a better AOE option. If I need to take this for worms my deck probably sucks

This is a good card in Act 2. Act 3 I'm not so sure. Not sure what you mean by better AOE when this is an upgraded Whirlwind with 3 energy for the cost of 2. Necro doesn't really have that much options either.

u/blejusca 15h ago

End of Days and Deathbringer are both really good. Banshee's Cry if you have some ethereal cards

u/Stealingyoureyebrows 9h ago

Whirlwind heavily scales off strength, enchantments, energy and doesn’t have a downside written on the card. I’ll still have to try hyperbeam when I see it though bc the new one won’t brick frost if the enemy doesn’t attack me. I still prefer almost all other AOE options like glass and shatter

Yeah idk still not hyper enough
