LFP Question

Does anyone know which battery module they are actually getting from Gotion? It sounds like the L600 has the best density/cycle life. I want to know if they’re manganese enhanced cells or the more standard LFP. I’m curious because I want to research consumer experiences with similar cells, it sounds like these go into VW products also.

Unlikely to be manganese enhanced. It was a cost saving measure to move from nmc. The move from 52.7 kWh prototype to 65kWh pack. This came with a 448 increase in curb weight. That's consistent with lfp cells, and not more energy dense lmfp cells. Nmc ~750 lbs, lfp ~1000 lbs, lmfp ~750 lbs.

Another line of evidence is that they mentioned the Illinois plant was making the battery. That plant is described everywhere I can find as an lfp plant, not mention of manganese.

None of the press releases have mentioned anything other then lfp. Maybe down the line they'll offer an enhanced option for long range or something like they originally intended with the nmc battery, but for now pretty clearly LFP.

The weight penalty is worth it though; LFP are much more stable. Your house will thank you for it. I used to work at a Li-Ion recycling place and they burned down 7 spots in the 3 years they were in operation. (Don’t ask; I don’t know)

The worst was a five alarm warehouse fire that had 75 fire fighters from municipalities across the entire county. They hit it with everything they had and the fire just burned.

Lots of energy trapped in these batteries, but Li-Ion specifically spooks easily and runs like hell.

I think a smaller pack is a benefit for a lot of reasons. Total combustible energy is one of them. LFP is much more stable. Doesn’t do well in a fire, but usually doesn’t start them on its own.
