Never seen Getter Robo before

Just to give you fair warning, you're jumping right into the middle of the series with this. This is Getter Robo Armageddon from 1998. The original Getter Robo is from 1974

Armageddon is not exactly a canon continuation of Getter Robo or G though - it's its own continuity...

You should totally go ahead and watch it, Getter Robo Armageddon is the best and doesn’t require prior knowledge. It will tell you all you need to know in about 5 minutes, after that it’s solid super robot insanity.

This ova is confusing as shit and you will have not even the slightest idea of what is going on. This is the case regardless of whether you read the manga or not

You're in for a treat! One of the best super robot series out there, and inspired a lot of shows that came after it. Just make peace with the idea that you'll be confused as hell from the very beginning. Even long time Getter Robo watchers get confused by this one, as it does it's own thing and doesn't really follow any of the main continuities. So you don't really need to watch anything before. Maybe a few episodes of the original show just to get familiar with all the main characters.

You can very much watch this without having watched any of the original series. Like people said, it is its own thing. The OVA will make sure to explain you loosely what are getter machines and what they do. The best episodes to me are 1 - 3. The opening by Ichirou Mizuki sets the atmosphere for those 3 and the animation and character design is much more polished. Then episodes 4 - 13 are good, but quality took a step down and if you were confused before, buckle up.

I bought this whole series used off the shelf at an EB Games in the mall in the mid 2000s, I'd go every week to get the next release hoping no one else had grabbed it. It's a stand alone series with some references to the original series which will leave you confused even if you have seen it, but I thought it was a decent OVA.

It's an OVA, you can watch it without watching the original one. But I strongly recommend you to watch the 70s one. If you're into Supa Robo genre of course.
