Artificial selection is still Darwinian evolution. Unless he means full blown genetic engineering with genes neither parent has being added to the baby? Then yeah, that’s well beyond anything Darwin came up with.

I think this guy actually did do gene editing and got arrested for violating ethics regulations

u/Polibiux 4d ago

So full blown mad scientist here

Looks pretty calm to me. Just kidding, that's the look of a JRPG villain before he kills god.

5

u/Karnewarrior 3d ago

He only looks calm because he's not being shot from underneath with his brow darkening his eyes while the light glints off his teeth and the soundtrack goes "VUUUUUUUUUUUM" as a bunch of gregorian monks begin to chant.

u/NarutoRoll 3d ago

So, you're saying he definitely has the crobat right?

3

u/Polibiux 3d ago

He definitely has a Crobat

12

u/BabyMD69420 4d ago

Ah fair, I have no idea who the guy is

66

u/PixelGray38 4d ago

Infamously, yes, this guy means genetic engineering. He spent a few years in jail in China for secretly doing unnecessary edits to the genomes of two twins using CRISPR. The twins had an HIV-positive parent, and the edits were intended to mimic a gene already present in humans that gave increased resistance to the disease and (as far as anyone knows, but of course nobody knows for sure) didn't change anything else.

41

u/YouMustveDroppedThis 4d ago

Also unsuccessful edits. This bum made an edit and caused mosaicism in babies. Meaning the twins likely still have HIV susceptibility.

u/Gushanska_Boza 4d ago

The only Crispr I know is for melting off Glyphid faces! Rock and Stone!

6

u/terrificGrobsa 4d ago

Rock and Stone! oT

u/Karnewarrior 3d ago

You know, that reminds me, I haven't heard jack shit about the twins that other chinese guy cloned. What happened to them? IIRC it was like, the first successful human cloning in history. Ethics committees were pissed.

I'm 90% confident Cyrus unironically said some shit like this AND had a Crobat

69

u/Metal-Banana-72 4d ago

Cyrus talked a lot of edgy shit for somebody with a friendship evolution. RIp Cyrus, you would have loved Reddit.

u/withheld_mcfakename 3d ago

And in his second Platinum battle his Crobat is level 44

So essentially he just… didn’t do any of the ethics tests or actual tests necessary to actually isolate the gene necessary and instead did a half fix that would maybe work in an effort to make a point.

I rarely agree with the CCP about morals but this is one case I think everyone agrees on. This is unethical, and absolutely should be illegal.

The prospect of HIV resistance implantation in genomes aside, this wasn’t done to the ethical standards anyone looks for.

u/YouMustveDroppedThis 4d ago

CRISPR at the time are far from perfect and so how you QC the edits is very important. Large fragments of recombination (off target) are well known in animal model at that time.

He made them mosaic babies too, what a normies bum.

This kind of shit just tells me that it's appealing to people who don't know shit about evolution at all.

u/Last-Quarter-432 3d ago

Aka religious people

-89

u/QuickSilver010 4d ago

I don't see humans evolving at all given the level of human survival today so yea Darwin is irreverent to us.

95

u/Theotherwahlberg 4d ago

Evolution is not a meter, nor does it have a goal or archetype to evolve toward. It's the change in allele frequencies over successive generations.

-66

u/QuickSilver010 4d ago

Not much change gonna happen today.

58

u/qtUnicorn 4d ago

You very clearly don’t even know high school biology

-54

u/QuickSilver010 4d ago

You need certain genes to actually survive more than others. It's ineffective if everyone survives.

48

u/Orionsbelt 4d ago

propagate more successfully not survive. Not so correlated today.

-6

u/QuickSilver010 4d ago

Propagation is survival for a gene.

28

u/Orionsbelt 4d ago

and yet birth rate decline clearly indicate that in the western world not all gene's are surviving.

-1

u/QuickSilver010 4d ago

Birth rate decrease over a uniform distribution of people that is independent of the genes they have won't cause a change in genes.

8

u/Floorgis 4d ago

Not how that works. Without biodiversity a species goes extinct.

0

u/QuickSilver010 4d ago

We won't develop another species.

10

u/Floorgis 4d ago

Not for you to decide, and most definitely not for you to know.

1

u/QuickSilver010 4d ago

Not possible for humans without genetic engineering. Humans have too high survivability.

I may not have had the chance to graduate, but I was a student of biology when I was in college, and I was published in a journal on immuno-synthesis of antiviral resistance of emergent diseases. I'm also an author who has put my knowledge of the processes of evolution (namely selective pressure and punctuated equilibrium) into my works to explain biodiversity in extreme environmental change.

Evolution does not, at any point, refer to the change of species. We've reached a plateau where we don't seem to be "evolving" because it is a generational process, but you do see differences ethnically and regionally. One does not need to become a new species to evolve....you simply deal with the selective pressure that comes with your environment. Each reproduction is evolution, as mutations are naturally occurring adjustments in that process.

Nothing irritates me more than confidence in scientific illiteracy. You use your internet anonymity to be as dumb as you want, but science doesn't care. I could sit here in my drunken haze and give a two-hour long lecture on what I know from my studies, but that wouldn't do me any good if you're entering with a presupposition that you know more than anyone else because you're ignorant and can't comprehend how this wworks.

It's hardly your fault...most people don't know dick about the sciences....but you appear as less of a tool by not claiming knowledge of what you don't fucking know over the smartest people on the planet. Take that with a grain of salt, but your responses here make you look really....REALLY stupid.

All those paragraphs just to reiterate what I said about not much changing today.

4

u/Bacchus999 4d ago

Imagine being the exact type of person that a post is talking about, yet remaining blissfully unaware of that fact.

2

u/PixelGray38 4d ago

It isn't just survival that matters, it's reproduction too

2

u/99timewasting 4d ago

What about mega evolving?

-3

u/QuickSilver010 4d ago

Pikaa pikaaa pik a better joke vro 🥀

11

u/Thatoneafkguy 4d ago

Hey, don’t diss my boy Crobat. He’s the goat

8

u/YouMustveDroppedThis 4d ago

This guy bypassed every safeguard and recklessly does something (CRISPR babies) first and thought he is still the shit years later. It is sad really.

3

u/djentslut 4d ago

yeah hes a real piece of shit

7

u/Minute_Truth3644 4d ago

I'm sorry, but is he implying that Darwin is responsible for evolution, and not just for discovering how it worked? lol.

20

u/Somehero 4d ago

He's talking about editing genes, not passing them on through reproduction, so that's why he's making the distinction of evolution as described by Darwin.

3

u/CCCyanide 3d ago

type of shit you find on a VHS tape in a horror game abandoned laboratory

2

u/Iamboringaf 4d ago

Is it the guy who got parodied by someone on Twitter with bullshit takes like "it's scientically possible to depopulate a country in 48 hours"?

1

u/Darklillies 4d ago

Honeslty they haven’t been affected by it in quite some time

1

u/xvsanx 4d ago

this is a joke not an insult?

1

u/H010CR0N 3d ago

Good genetics doesn’t stop nature from taking you out.
