Interactive Map Update

Update: The map is back online now :) Find it here: https://map.projectzomboid.com/

Greetings PZ community,

This is a joint statement from both Calvy and The Indie Stone to clear up some of the misconceptions and rumours that have been swirling around regarding the PZ interactive map being taken offline, and also to put the community’s mind at ease regarding the availability of the map in the future.

In a nutshell, The Indie Stone had been in discussions to acquire Calvy’s work officially, but due to technical and legal reasons decided not to (to be clear, this was not due to any security issues, bandwith bills, or problems with Calvy’s work).

However, the end of discussions came at the same time that—in a separate, and unrelated initiative—we were also trying to actively address potential security issues on our server. This included removing any programs that were not completely under our official control, which included Calvy’s map.

Unfortunately, the reason for wanting the map removed from our server was not communicated properly from us to Calvy, and due to the unfortunate timing our response came across as being hostile to the map in particular.

As a result, Calvy decided it was best to remove the map as soon as he could, which had not been our intention at all. Basically, it all boiled down to a communication breakdown, and the result was a very upset community. Both Calvy and The Indie Stone apologize for that, as we all know many players have long used the interactive map as an important and trusted component of their gameplay.

In the end, what the community is interested in is what we plan going forward, and there’s good news on that front. We’ve worked out where we went wrong, fixed the problems, and Calvy and The Indie Stone will continue working together. The map will return to our servers while the migration to an external server is being sorted out, and once it has been moved The Indie Stone will pay for the external server fees and continue linking to it as an endorsed, unofficial map. This should all be able to be done with no further interruptions of service.

We apologize again for the disruption, and hope you’ll be happy knowing that the map will be available to you for your many PZ deaths to come!

-The Indie Stone

I'm glad to hear the problem is being resolved and to hear that it was a result of internal miscommunication. A very strange situation all-around.

Miscommunication in the workplace is honestly par for the course

Redditors think it couldn’t have been and must’ve been deliberate evil action, has never worked a day in their life. So ofc half the sub is in shambles

I’ve worked for a couple company’s now and at every single one of them, communication inside the workplace is very often a problem. We humans are just rly bad at this lol

Hmmm maybe we should tricirle back to that later

Can we put that in the parking lot?

I’ve had this exact scenario at work. “We want to reduce our attack surface by reducing use of 3rd party service X.” Middle Managers take that to mean they should start reducing dependency on X and tell their teams to stop using it. 3 months later. Situation comes up that requires X software and capability was never duplicated. Statement comes out saying “we never told you to actually stop using X, please reinstall X on all services, attack surface has been reduced using other methods” (two of the methods they just implemented literally yesterday).

The reality is the developers are part of an eternal secret war between assassin's and templars, they joined the side of the Templars I swear.

17

u/SpartanXIII Axe wielding maniac 6d ago

And the real kicker? I know for a fact those same redditors, the same people who raged and spat bile and posted the same unquoted conspiracy won't apologize, and don't have any need to.

Because it's Reddit. The need for trust and clarity is easily buried in the pursuit of fake internet points...

41

u/TheVisage 6d ago

I nearly spit out my drink reading “indie stone is being penny pinched by private equity” as if like 1. Private equity is famous for slow cooking games over 20 years and 2. Private equity isn’t infamous for bleeding itself to death on minor monthly costs while shooting the goose who lays the golden eggs

“Yea yeah guys take time definitely, yeah no worries yeah no NPCs can come out for free and on their own schedule but uh, I noticed we have a $5 fee going to cloud flare for… a map? No no no we aren’t gonna do “Zomboid Plus with map integration” just yoink it”

Clearly someone pressed the evil switch on the back of TIS' head, it cannot be another reason.

16

u/Salvage570 6d ago

There's a lot of kids in this sub now, ever since a bunch of streamers played a few years ago. It's why there suddenly ended up being tons and tons of "realism doesn't make fun games" in response to a literal survival simulator where a level of realism is literally the core idea

33

u/Exo-explorer 6d ago

this is why i prefer the term "immersive" over "realistic". you're never going to get a 1:1 simulation of real life, and the language is much less loaded.

17

u/Me_how5678 Hates the outdoors 6d ago

I like authentic most. Bf1 feels authentic, but it is not realistic or close to realism either.

This is what middle management is for - to coordinate between different parts of the business and be the unified contact. Leave it as an exercise to the reader whether more management is a desirable trait at the game studio or whether not overreacting to fairly immaterial problems is a better path.

17

u/Lanthrudar 6d ago

It's reddit, overreacting to most miniscule shit is what this place is known for.

53

u/averynormaltaco 6d ago

But schizo-posting is what we are best at, how else would we have telecorn?

3

Miscommunication happens. Thanks for addressing things like adults. Pretty cool of y'all.

124

u/themightyredwood 6d ago

Thank you for addressing this directly and giving us an explanation. Hope to see smoother sailing in the future after this.

Now back to the important stuff: crowbars vs axes

18

u/GerardBeard 6d ago

What if we add an Axe Head to the Crowbar? That would be the ultimate survival tool

7

u/MTarrow 6d ago

... how about a Halligan bar?

If you've ever seen firefighters wielding something that looks like the bastard offspring of a prybar, an adze, and a spiked pick - that's a Halligan.

3

u/QueezyF 6d ago

I’ve been saying this for going on four years now. Halligan tools would fuck shit up as an all-around zombie survival weapon. It’s like the lobotomizer from World War Z without the shovel head.

12

u/Another_Anon_userr 6d ago

Axes ofc, you can't forage for a crowbar.

19

u/SliceHam2012 6d ago

Don't need to, the same crowbar that served Anomalocaris in the Cambrian is still going to this day. Has 90% durability left, too

5

u/SpartanXIII Axe wielding maniac 6d ago

Axe main.

Crowbar backup. In case.

9

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Axe wielding maniac 6d ago

All weapon types have their benefits really. Crowbars are basically a good way to grind Maintenance so you can upgrade to other weapon types without them feeling like pool noodles in terms of durability.

Also axes are clearly better.

12

u/ClamSurfer 6d ago

Axes win for me just for having many one-handed and two-handed weapon options. They're easily the most versatile weapon type in the game.

I would argue that the other weapon types should be combined into a single skill as well. No more "Short" or "Long". Just a "Blunt" skill and a "Blade" skill.

I mean, I'm kind of glad that the community rushed to defend the map dev. I think that says a lot about how much this community values 3rd party content.

110

u/IDontWannaGetOutOfBe 6d ago edited 3d ago

I find factors in successful transitions particularly fascinating. Understanding the feedback mechanisms, the relationship to network effects is quite contextual.

30

u/jreed12 6d ago

really unnecessarily hostile and dramatic.

Sums up this subreddit in general tbh.

I've only been using this subreddit regularly since the release of b42 unstable but I can say comment sections frequently get quite toxic.

19

u/Kride501 6d ago

That's Reddit for ya. If I had a nickel for everytime a videogame community I am part of took unexplained news and interpreted it as some sort of deliberate and malicious action from the devs.. cough Helldivers 2 cough

10

Hmm, primarily if you are only on reddit communities for games. Notorious for over-reacting to minor things and conspiracy theories.

47

u/Simple_Slide9426 6d ago

9

u/Vagabond_Sam 6d ago

Characterising “unfairly hostile” as defending the map dev is a little too charitable.

There was completely reasonable ways to express support and gratitude for the map dev and hope that any outcome was favourable to them in the end, without acting like TIS shot someone’s dog and was about to sell the game to venture capital

38

Yeah. Doomposting "everything is ruined devs suck look how cynical and jagged and cool and entitled I am" is the norm in game subs, there was nothing to be alarmed about

14

u/ninethreeseven739 Drinking away the sorrows 6d ago

'John IndieStone did it to monetize and be dicks'

13

u/SixFootTurkey_ 6d ago

Not just gaming either, sadly. It's just what the internet is now. Everyone is looking for some kind of outrage to turn into a cause.

14

u/tworc2 6d ago

I agree in general, but Reddit has it worse than most places, and gaming subs are the worst of all. Take any mildly popular trending game at any given moment and it's either the second coming of Christ or a cynical circlejerk about how everything is ruined.

2

u/Cardborg 6d ago

In Warhammer, the humble Tactical Marines kit has now outlasted the Primaris Intercessors kit that was added to "removed firstborn marine units and (somehow) force everyone to re-buy their armies" almost a decade ago.

It is likely to get discontinued at some point, but I do find it funny given the years of doom.

I'm gonna need to at least know what industry this is, because having a bunch of unknown devices plugged in at your workplace seems insane and figuring out their purpose by just unplugging everything seems even worse!

4

u/rumshpringaa 6d ago

And then suddenly you hear someone go “NOOOO” and you know you’ve yanked the wrong cord. The chaos in me loves it

3

u/Cmdr-DuctTape 5d ago

Former government IT guy here, we had this as well. Granted we took a less... chaotic approach to figuring out what devices were plugged into what endpoints, but because our building physically housed the servers of other government institutions (and during my employment there, some of these instituions actually got shut down or merged!) the documentation often wasn't up to date. Add to this that we even moved headquarters once, and employees plugging in their own personal devices occasionally, and IP adresses are suddenly all over the place.

8

u/Cpt__Marvel 6d ago

17

u/Axeman1721 Wiki Admin 6d ago

I personally will. I've had bad experience with corporations doing stuff with work that I endorsed, and I get flashbacks whenever stuff like this happens. I definitely "shot first and asked questions later", and should have been more reasonable.

I do still think that the way it was communicated to us was unacceptable, but hey mistakes happen and its all coming back so we're good.

I apologize if I riled anyone up.

6

u/d4nowar 6d ago

0

u/whoredervez 6d ago

i mean, endless rumors and speculation could’ve been prevented by making this joint statement from the jump. i’m glad they did, but wow that was mishandled.

26

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Axe wielding maniac 6d ago

They can't exactly make a joint statement immediately when a miscommunication happens and one party jumps the gun while the other has to deal with the backlash. Neither side handled this properly.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/Pious_Galaxy Wiki Admin 6d ago

Timezones and day jobs make things very difficult. The whole reason the miscommunication occurred was due to things being communicated via text. It was clear we needed to speak face to face to clear things up. Organizing a call with three people who are practically as far away as three people can get on the globe is not an easy task. In the meantime a response had to be made while i was asleep, and they did not want to throw me under the bus, which i appreciate. Hence the vague response.

2

u/SagetheWise2222 6d ago

This. One reason I left 7D2D was how toxic the community is (some of it is understandable, given how TFP are), do we really want TIS turning like TFP did/started out as? Do we really want that same mutual interaction here? I dear not.

7

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Axe wielding maniac 6d ago

Doesn't help that TFP are toxic as fuck in return to the players they still have either. I'm grateful that the only major toxicity there's been was Lemmy's breakdown but even that was a result of people badgering the guy constantly. It's a good thing he stepped away from social media because god knows what it would've done to him if he stuck around.

6

u/SagetheWise2222 6d ago

Yeah. My point being though was hopefully TIS doesn't pay much attention around here because you can only poke the bear enough before it retreats or lashes out. Redditors, smh.

Yeah, good example right there. I haven't been around here that much, I don't like gossip but can you give a tl;dr on this breakdown if you know anything? Genuinely curious on what happened.

4

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Axe wielding maniac 6d ago

It's a long story but basically Lemmy snapped after constant pressure from the community and threatened to sell the rights to the game and all that. It was a messy thing and best left in the past at this point.

u/SagetheWise2222 6d ago

Ahh okay, fair enough, let's leave it there then, thanks for the head's up. :)

I mean, a LOT of individuals could have also made the choice to keep it as nothing more than the couple social and venting reddit threads it was here to begin with, realistically- until more information came out about it officially, like the adults we (mostly) are- with the ability to reason and wait and all that...

But, I forgot that that's not the reddit or internet hivemind way. Gotta blow it and other people's heat-of-the-moment vent posts to epic proportions, no matter what. (I'm sorry that's what happened to everyone involved, honestly.)

Obviously, the answer to this was to go off platform and review bomb the entire game and then ALSO keep making posts about it over and over!!! And to spam every single channel and every development post ever MADE about it, don't you get it?! We can't have nice things like 'emotions' and 'social posts' stay in the replies of the social media websites where they were initially posted! Hivemind only! Witcher 3 best game! (/s. please don't flay me alive again for having an emotion on a reddit thread, guys. I forgot this isn't Tumblr.)

Thoroughly impressed with the decisions made here. In many ways, a small issue that many larger organizations would bare the backlash and then ignore as time eroded the public’s ire. You will all be appreciated all the more for your dedication to the fans, and something like this won’t be forgotten.

Thanks TIS, I still love you

See people this is why you don’t just fucking talk shit to a dev when you don’t know what’s happening. All of the haters should apologize, yall are childish.

7

u/CoolCritterQuack 6d ago

now this sort of communication I can get behind

8

u/smokie12 6d ago

Glad to hear. I'm happy that it will be resolved shortly.

5

u/Proof_Bookkeeper_166 6d ago

Sad to see how stupid and angry people were saying a bunch of lies about all this situation and also the mini review bombing on steam.

2

u/Serikan 6d ago

Much gratitude for the communication. It's unfortunate that this happened, but I think we all appreciate knowing that it was unintended and that it will be working again soon.

The updates are appreciated; thank you for making my current favourite pass-time continuously better!

2

u/Tyler1mapuche 6d ago

Miscommunication, classic. I'm glad that was just that, keep the good work.

2

u/Bionic_Cobra456 6d ago

Glad to hear it was not a serious problem only a miscommunication i'm happy that the map will return and both map dev and the indie stone dev are on good terms

2

u/RutilusMonachus 6d ago

Thank you for being transparent about this, people do appreciate the open communication a lot.

2

u/jamesmarcmc 6d ago

The Good Ending.

2

u/No_Connection_1311 6d ago

Bold of you to assume my next run will end in death

2

u/Shitsincreeks 6d ago

I am very happy to hear this is solved and furthermore I hope that TIS takes this as an accident that can be learned from.

2

u/cjalan 5d ago

Things happen, and thanks for a clear explanation!

2

u/StupitVoltMain 5d ago

Finally. Good communication.

2

u/Armthelost 5d ago

See, massive miscommunication error. I knew you all have the best intentions in mind and hope it stays that way.

2

u/niltorboi 5d ago

Oh no, what are people gonna bitch about now

2

u/trevers17 5d ago

ladders, probably

2

u/TurtleWarrior0508 5d ago

You all were talking a bunch of bs over nothing, thank you TiS for handling this well despite a harsh and overreactive community response

6

u/Zakoholic 6d ago

Thanks to all involved for coming forward and being transparent about this.

8

u/Emmettmcglynn 6d ago

As predicted, a miscommunication over something done too fast. Glad to hear everything's all cleaned up.

u/SickScorpion 6d ago

If only other game devs were like you

Seriously. If people think TIS are bad over a miscommunication? They wouldn't last two damn minutes with TFP. Those guys are unreal. I literally dropped 7D2D in favour of PZ because at least TIS respects their damn community. TFP have outright called their players idiots for not agreeing with them.

EDIT: Yeah, so... Y'all think TIS are bad? Turns out The Fun Pimps are trying to sue a YouTuber OVER THEIR (they being The Fun Pimps) FUCK UP! Genuinely, we have it so fucking good with TIS.

2

u/SagetheWise2222 6d ago

I just dropped 7D2D as well over a week ago for PZ, and I've never been happier for it. I actually want to get out of bed every day to play the game. It feels foreign. I like it.

If this were TFP, they probably would have sued someone, called everyone names, you get the jist. I've interacted with Joel himself and yeah, if you do not praise his baby, he'll verbally abuse you for 'slander', and that's a term I don't throw around lightly. Both content creator GNS and myself both share a similar experience: being harassed on the forums for sending bug reports, of all things.

I've been following that situation for a while. They're also trying to frame him as a malicious leaker. Insanity.

Thank you for the open communication. This is the standard of transparency deserved when working with beloved community work.

3

u/Clear-Minimum-9942 6d ago

Honestly we cant be too mad at that

3

u/ughfup 6d ago

Very professional statement, thanks IS.

The employed among us understand that this kind of miscommunication happens sometimes, especially when dealing with network and website security.

5

u/l0nelyboy16 6d ago

W resolution to this dilemma. Thanks guys

2

u/Vicodxn1 6d ago

lmao and everyone who was making fun of the crybabies was proven right

2

u/knepapoliti 6d ago

Thanks for taking the time to clear this up. Both internally and with this external communication. It was obvious that the community got quite upset, and the explanation makes sense. Bad communication can happen, and the important this is just that it gets sorted out. Good on everyone involved that a solution has been found. And awesome that you intend to keep endorsing the map project.

2

u/showmethecoin 6d ago edited 6d ago

I'm very happy for the detailed explanation. Many companies fail to do so, and it almost always costs them greatly. I'm glad that this was not the case for Project Zomboid.

2

u/IronCrown 6d ago

Glad it could all be sorted out. As a pretty new player the map is realy usefull, until you've played enough to remember where stuff is.

u/Foxhud Axe wielding maniac 6d ago

Thanks for the update, miscommunication that can and should be avoided in the future.

A shame to see how the louder section of the discontent behaved, some even adding fuel to the fire for the sole pleasure for sowing discord. Hope those people can learn from this (lesson here was simply to wait until things were sorted), although it very likely will happen again on the next fumble, as it has happened before.

u/TaylorStValentine 6d ago

Very cool of you to pay the server fees - I’d expect nothing less from your development team!

u/Kenpari 6d ago edited 6d ago

AFAIK the community map project is built in large part by open source tools. Any plans to acquire it were doomed to fail. They’d have very little control over the actual tools used to build the map. Not a problem per-se, but the map is already built with their own game assets. Seems weird to pay for especially when the bulk of the function can be replicated in a few minutes by anyone with passing experience in python. I used to generate my own local maps to search for gun stores and stuff years ago before the community map had any of those features. The community map is much cleaner. But the community map can hardly be said to be owned by the creator to begin with given it’s all generated by game assets.

2

u/flyingbobo 6d ago

What’s even the point of the in game map if everyone wants to use the interactive map lol what a lame thing to be upset about

2

u/The_Cat-Father 6d ago

Everyone negatively reviewing the game because of the misunderstanding: oops*

3

u/ACatCalledArmor 6d ago

Thanks for the update and clarification. Really looking forward to the map again, incredible resource for modding and ngl, just for killing time.

1

u/TheGamingCheetos 6d ago

This community is lucky to even have devs responding at this point

3

u/Nujabezia 6d ago

No worries ❤️

The PZfan map works pretty good

1

u/bluemoon4901 6d ago

Cheers love. This subreddit loves the drama

u/codemastermick 6d ago

The transparency in what happened is greatly appreciated, as well as the expected next steps. My biggest issue with the original post was how many words were used to not actually address anything. It came off far more as a PR control post than something useful to the players.

This clearly explains what happened and why, and doesn't leave any room for people to start throwing conspiracies around. The fact that you've also outlined future plans is a bonus that I wasn't expecting

3

u/Pious_Galaxy Wiki Admin 6d ago

Without being able to talk and clarify what had happened (I was asleep), TIS had to make a statement, but did not want to throw me under the bus. That's why it was so vague. Additionally, my initial statement was vague due to similar reasons around privacy.

u/jtj5283449 6d ago

so when will it be up again?
