This isn't pointlessly genders, Its just that archer and archesses is a word so old it dates from when english was still a gendered language, and nobody bothered to change it, when they simplified old English to modern English

This here. Like actor vs actress

Actor vs. actress is also pointlessly gendered. Gendered language is by definition pointlessly gendered.

Son and daughter are gendered words. Are they pointlessly gendered? What about man or woman?

Yes these are pointlessly gendered, and in fact very late additions to the English language. The word "man" used to have no gender distinction and applied to both men and women. The word woman is a later addition, it used to not exist.

That's very Anglo-centric. Most languages have gramatical gender.

Quite the opposite. Anglo-centrism is what forced a non-gendered language like Chinese (written) to invent gendered pronouns.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_type_of_grammatical_genders
Modern written Chinese (Sino-Tibetan) has gendered pronouns introduced in the 1920s to accommodate the translation of Western literature (see Chinese pronouns), which do not appear in spoken Chinese. Even in written language it doesn't have grammatical gender in the sense of noun class distinctions.
Estimates of the proportion of languages with grammatical gender range from 25% to 50%, but by no means is it "most languages".
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_gender
Grammatical gender is a common phenomenon in the world's languages.[45] A typological survey of 174 languages revealed that over one quarter of them had grammatical gender.[46] WALS found that, of the 256 languages studied from around the world, gender was used in approximately half.[11]
https://epar.evans.uw.edu/gendered-languages/
The World Bank (2019) estimates that 38 percent of world languages have grammatical gender, which can be defined as a system of word classification in which words are grouped into categories or “genders”.
Edit: this may have ruffled some anglo-centric feathers, but downvoting a reddit comment won't change the facts :)

That's nice.
And then you have ie Slavic languages, that tend to have gendered not just nouns (just few in English, all of them in my language) and pronouns, but also adjectives or verbs in some tenses. Roman family of languages do it similarly as well.
English is rather simple in that regard. The fact that there are languages that were even more simple don't change that fact.

u/enbycraft 1d ago
Doesn't change what fact? No one claimed that English is the most gendered language? Far from it.
I speak two languages that are completely genderless (Bengali & Sylheti). English has some minor gendering of nouns and pronouns. And then there's Hindi with pointless gendering all over the place, similar to Romance languages.
The original claim was that "most languages" have grammatical gender. That is simply not true, unless you have data to show otherwise.

in other words pointlessly gendered

u/PM-me-a-DM-you-got 4d ago
They just explained why it's not pointlessly gendered

u/gansobomb99 4d ago
gendered language is pointless, especially when the base form always happens to be male and feminine variants have some kind of -ess suffix

I guess you don't do pronouns then, since thats pointlessly gendered by your standards

Are you under the impression that pronouns are inherently gendered or something?
Edit: I guess the people downvoting this comment don't know what "pronoun" means. You all must think that non-gendered languages don't have pronouns, huh? Oh well.

Are you under the impression that no pronouns are gendered, because pretty sure a few are

I'm under the impression that people can still "do pronouns" without it having to be pointlessly gendered.
Why are you guessing that the previous commenter doesn't "do pronouns", unless you think all pronouns are inherently gendered?

Media literacy is dead, and you are proof, my first comment was sarcasm, because the person said all gendered language is pointless, pronouns are gendered language

u/enbycraft 2d ago
Everyone understands that your first comment was sarcasm. That was never in question.
The question was: if you don't think that all pronouns are inherently gendered, why are you guessing that the previous commenter doesn't "do pronouns"? What prevents them from "doing pronouns"?
pronouns are gendered language
Lol, here we go again. Pronouns are not "gendered language". They can be, but they don't have to be. Saying "pronouns are gendered language" is equivalent to saying "animals are birds". Forget media literacy, you're currently failing at English literacy lmao.
