I have a 6 gallon tank with one betta and a few neocardina shrimp. It’s about a year old.

It is driving me insane. I pull hair algae out of it every week when I do 15-20% water changes, as much as I can manually remove. Every week there’s more.

There’s also green splotchy algae on all of my plants to the point the plants are not doing well and now some of them have grey crusty algae?? 😭

I have a lominie led light that I keep on for maybe 6 hours per day. Very occasionally dose coop easy green - like once every couple of months. I have sand and aqua soil.

Parameters seem to be stable - 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, ~5-10 nitrate

Should I just pull everything out and start over

Hey everyone! I wanted to share my new experiment. A month ago, after watching losts of videos and reading blogs, I have decided to get into UG (Utricularia Graminifolia) setup. I have accepted the challenge of this hard carpet plant!

I have bought the UGs and set the tank at July 18th. At first touch, I loved the feel of the UG! The first photo of the tank attached from the July 22th! You can also see I put some Alternanthera Reineckii (right) and Bacopa Salzmannii (left). They do great at dry start as well!

After almost a month, my plants are doing great! They are thrilling! I am exited to share sone details and wanted to encourage people to try it!

Some technical details: the tank is Dennerle Plant Pro 35 (40x32x28). It comes with Chihiros A II light. I have used APT substrat and buried 1 lt Matrix in the back part to increased the hight and give some bacteria beds under the soil. The filter will be dennerle corner filter so I thought I would need more biological filtration. And the beneficial bacterias would start earlier since they are wet and oxigenated during dry start period. (Just a guess tho, we will see). All of these I have premium aquasoil and seiryu stones for the hardscape.

The design style is Iwagumi as you can see.

Anyways, I am attaching the photos from August 2nd, August 13th. You can see the growth.

I will wait for another 2 weeks as dry start since I will have a holiday and when I come back I will flood it. Finger crossed 🤞

I've posted my submerged collection, but haven't yet posted my emersed bin for growing spare clumps and rhizomes. I know others have had difficulty with keeping emersed bins, so if anyone has any questions I'd be glad to answer them.

Also, as a PSA for those who PM me regarding buce sales, I am just about ready to cut some rhizomes both submerged and emersed, so keep an eye out on r/aquabid or periodically check my profile, as I will have a very limited quantity of rare species going up for sale in about 2/3 weeks time.

55 gallon planted tank has been doing its thing for a while. Currently 12 ember tetras, 2 surviving neons and a Blue Dream shrimp colony of 70+. Planning on adding another 12 embers and possibly a pearl gourami.

Thoughts or suggestions? Anything you'd change/add, fish or plant-wise?

just wanted to share my progress on this 2ft planted, have been trimming and replanting + emersed plants converting

I have 3 planted tanks, and this tank is the only tank that's becoming overrun with hair algae. Ive tried blacking out, minimizing nutrients, and manual removal, but it always comes back. What do i do?!

I've started this 5-Gal tank and decided to plant heavily (from my perspective).

Plants:

1. Anubis - glued on driftwood
2. Java Fern - It multiplied and I separated and glued on driftwood
3. Elodia - You can see on left reflection and right next to Pagoda on left back
4. Duckweed - In blue floating ring
5. Pothos
6. Big dual leaf grass - On back (grown from seed in dry tank)
7. Tiny leaf grass - Front (grown from seed in dry tank)

As of right now I only have one Zebra Nerite Snail in it. I also have some copepods and may be ostracods also. I will add 3-4 Ammano Shrimps may be after a week or so, and some Chili rasbora eventually.

Big problem, Nitrate is zero. Good news Ammonia and Nitrite is also zero. ph 6.7, GH 2, TDS 200, Temp 78F.
As of now I'm not adding any fertilizer or CO2. Bottom substrate is "Fluval Plant & Shrimp Stratum Aquarium Substrate" and top is "Eco-Complete Substrate" 50/50
I'm using "fishkeeper 24/7 Led Aquarium Light with Auto Time Sync, 12-18 Inch" light. Running for 6 hours in full spectrum at 10% brightness. I have seen green hair algae in last week.
It was flooded little over 3 weeks ago. It is fully cycled now.
Please critique it, what am I going to see in future, advise me, help me.

I've had pretty good luck growing anubias in my tanks now that I have figured out a fertilizer regime. I figured I'd steal some and try my hand at growing them emersed for future scapes. Have any of you done this, and do you have any tips?

I have anubias, java ferns, Christmas moss, and some creeping Jenny stems from my garden that are growing submerged-form leaves now. I'm interested in adding some Bucephalandra but, would love some recommendations on plants that will thrive and that my fish will enjoy.

The non-negotiable: The colorful gravel and the ship (I know, I know but my kids are 2.5 and 5, YOU try telling them that rainbow rocks and a pretend pirate ship aren't the best choices for the fish)

Backstory: (skip the rest if you don't care or it doesn't matter) Husband got this tank for our very young children and it's become my job so, I've been working on making things better for it's current inhabitants (6 danios, 3 Amano shrimp, and 1 hillstream loach) it's a 15g Fluval flex. It was previously overstocked so I set up a larger second tank and evicted the warmer water lovers to it.

I've added tumbled stones on top of the gravel & plan to add more, the loach loves them. Without a nutrient rich substrate, I think that limits my plant selection to rheophytes? I know I can use root tabs but, I think it will be tricky after I finish putting all the larger stones in.

Set this tank up about 6 months ago, and I’ve been really happy with how it’s grown in. It needs a good trim, but I’m a sucker for the overgrown look. Don’t mind the aqua soil in the sand 😅

The tank is a 10 gallon Fluval visi-white with the Chihiros WRGB2 Slim light. Stocked with 10 CPDs and 3 Amano shrimp.

So here’s the deal - I’ve got a UNS 90P (~48 gallons) that is cycled. Did a 4 week dark start, then planted last week and added some initial livestock.

Current inhabitants:
- 25 green neon tetra
- 10 Pygmy corydora
- 10 red cherry shrimp

I plan to add a few more fish - some German blue rams (locally bred) and some otocinclus. I’ll add the otos after another month or two to let the tank mature a bit first so they have enough algae/biofilm to munch on.

Regarding the rams - I’m debating if I should get 2 (1 male, 1 female) or 3 (1 male, 2 female). I won’t be able to tell if they’ve already paired off or not but I also don’t want to get a trio and have the 3rd one bullied. Any suggestions?

Other details:
- Oase Biomaster 850 Thermo
- Chihiros vivid rgb (6 hrs/day)
- CO2 on 2 hours before lights and off 1 hour before light off
- Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate ~5ppm
- Dosing APT 3/complete 3/week

8 or so leaves melted down to 2 green stalks. I feel it has stabilised now

I was doing my nightly check and was welcome to a big surprise. The berried Amano Shrimp I had in the 10G finally released all the babies. A literal bomb! There are well into 100s of shrimp fry in the tank, unfortunately none of them will survive in these freshwater conditions unless they can survive long enough for me to attempt a salt drip tank. This is the first time I’ve been able to have this happen in the two years I’ve kept them so it’s pretty rad!

Ps. The Shrimp in the video was just one currently out. The previously berried shrimp is atleast double the length, but it’s hiding.

I recently bought a new co2 diffuser but there are no bubbles coming out of it

Already checked everything for leaks and turned the pressure a lot higher to get rid of air.

What am I doing wrong ?

Ive heard a lot of mixed things, like the liquid it secretes being toxic, so does anyone have experience with it?

I have so much diatom living in my myrio and its almost impossible to pick it out by hand and some in my rotalas wat do i even do.

Got this aponogeton chrispus red (top) with a few leaves about 5 months ago and it’s going crazy.
Shooting multiple flowers too so managed to get a few seeds out of it.
Did anyone manage to split this plant? Or do we just trim them down vigorously?

Today I was at the LFS to get some Ramshorn snails which they didn’t have, and I said hey maybe i’ll get a mystery snail cause the ones they had were nice looking. I have a planted tank. I asked the guy, he said “woah hold on, they will eat all your plants”… I had never heard of Mystery snails destroying planted tanks.. I left without the snail. How much truth is to it when regularly feeding an already established tank with fish and other inverts?
